…to suggest that it’s time the Royal family stands on its own feet and stops taking money from the public purse?

The Royal family owns and has access to lots of money, land and property. So is it right that they should to take any more money away from us?

I actually think Wills and Kate are very positive role models

How? I mean if Kate had a career and did the Royal things she does as well then I'd say she was a positive role model. From what I can tell she attends a couple of things a week (or maybe not, I don't keep track) and that's it really.

William just seems quite blah and apart from the air ambulance, hasn't really ever worked a proper day in his life.

At best, they're the best of a very bad bunch.

They are not selfless acts. They get to live a life most of us could only dream of.

I don’t dream of it. I don’t know many people who would want their life. They live in a gilded cage.

I actually think Wills and Kate are very positive role models

In what way?

They do relatively little work and have multiple expensive holidays, properties and wardrobes, childcare and staff on tap, they are not particularly talented at anything nor have they achieved anything particularly important or useful.

They seem perfectly pleasant, I am not saying they are awful - but I could say the same about many many people who don’t get lavishly funded by the taxpayer.

They do selfless acts like charity work apparently...must be bloody exhausting. I hope they have help...oh, wait a minute..

HelpMeGetThrough · 20/02/2026 17:55

waterbobble · 20/02/2026 17:42

I imagine that they’ve bought so much love and support on their visits. They visit hospitals, dying children and the needy. Normal celebrities aren’t known for doing that, these are selfless acts and they need recognising using as such

I can’t tell if this satire?

Me too.

Selfless acts? They are doing it because they’ve been booked in. They won’t remember anybody by the time they get home.

If I was in a hospital bed dying and one of those lot started advancing on me, I’d be telling them to fuck off and leave me in peace.

firstofallimadelight · 20/02/2026 17:56

So how would it work?
Would they keep the profit earned through them - palace tours etc, but pay appropriate tax? So be self sufficient essentially and presumably charge for public appearances/interviews etc?

I wonder if the UK would be financially better off or not?

Oaktree1952 · 20/02/2026 17:57

I would much rather pay for King Charles and the royal family than Kier Starmer and any other prime minister and definitely more than a president.

Pianoaholic · 20/02/2026 17:57

Whatever they have done in promoting our country through attracting tourism has been overshadowed by Andrew's behaviour.
Agree with PP who said that younger people really aren't interested (or people in their 50s like me!)

No one forces them to marry into the family.

How original OP, that's only been done 1,000 timers in the past few days

YABU for not posting this interminable stuff on the RF board

So what do they actually DO?

Yes, I'd like to know. I also disagree that Kate is a positive role model for young women.

But we shouldn't have to pay for any of them. They're rich enough. Why should the poor fund the rich?

sittingonabeach · 20/02/2026 17:59

The Government expect them to take part, host events etc. Not sure they should do that for free

Soft diplomacy. We are lucky to have them tbh. Other royal family’s do the same not just ours. That itself pays for them.

I'm sure the huge tax breaks they benefit from should cover any work they do

TheMorgenmuffel · 20/02/2026 18:02

Absolutely.

It is ridiculous that people who, through an accident of birth, have more than the vast majority of people will ever see or even dream of, should be taking even one penny from the poorest of us. Or any of us

Anyone who feels they are worth subsidising should feel free to set up a standing order to them and let the rest of us hang onto the little we have.

NoDrums · 20/02/2026 18:03

TheGrimSmile · 20/02/2026 16:59

You are right but somebody will be along soon to tell us that they bring in more than they take in tourist money. There are never any figures for this and it's impossible to quantify of course. It's bollocks. People like Buckingham Palace etc but they also like Versailles. We dont need a parasitic family living there to attract tourists. We could open the palace up to tourists. Look at France. They had the right idea.

@TheGrimSmile

I read this a couple days ago which gets into the “they are a tourist attraction” a few scrolls in. The whole write up is a great read.

Other RF are a hell of a lot more modest and transparent around the money they take from the state, and their money generally. Ours need to completely open up their wills and accounts as a minimum starting point.

Who else is going to pay them? They are running the country. They are working. Would you rather a prime minister who also was a teacher or accountant on the side? Your way of thinking suggests that people should work for free when they have a certain amount in their bank account.

The royal family costs £1.29 per person per year. Is that really that bad?

minipie · 20/02/2026 18:09

They are running the country. They are working.

They are certainly not running the country!

They are “working” in a sense only. I doubt anyone would notice if they stopped doing the “jobs” they do. With the possible exception of Anne.
