To vape?

It’s my one vice and I really enjoy it. I’m a single mum but don’t vape around my kids. My family always moan on about it though and say I’m pathetic. I feel like my family always hound me over it every time we speak. AIBU?

Oh come on, have you never been on Mumsnet before?

Vaping is the spawn of the devil and you're going to be ripped to shreds 🤣

I expect you're bored tonight? 😏

NeverDropYourMooncup · 16/02/2026 22:08

If it's compared to smoking a packet of cigarettes a day, YANBU.

If you chose to start vaping in itself, rather than as harm reduction for tobacco, that would be very, very daft.

Measley · 16/02/2026 22:10

Well adults look like they are sucking a dummy or sucking their thumb to me constantly putting on in their mouth. It's weird to be around as a non-vaper.

Did you smoke before? What led you to vaping?

Why do you enjoy about it?

Mamabee9 · 16/02/2026 22:12

I didn’t smoke before vaping. I tried one once and enjoyed it and just kept vaping.

ImPamDoove · 16/02/2026 22:15

They’re probably concerned for your health. And it’s daft to have taken it up as a non-smoker.

Bit ultimately, it’s your business. As long as you’re not affecting other people when you do it, it’s really only your problem.

smallsilvercloud · 16/02/2026 22:15

Why not just keep it to yourself? then you don’t need to listen to anyone’s opinions. You’re an adult, you don’t need your family telling you you’re pathetic.
I don’t personally like it but as long as no one’s puffing it in my face it doesn’t bother me.

TalulahJP · 16/02/2026 22:25

i googled “emphysema and vaping” and a whole bunch of stuff comes up that basically says it’s linked to a bunch of illnesses.

personally i reckon you'll feel fine for decades but itll get you in the end. as long as you know that it’s fine. but dont be under any illusions it’s harmless. it’s not.

“Vaping significantly increases the risk of developing emphysema and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) by causing lung inflammation and tissue damage similar to conventional smoking. Studies suggest that e-cigarette aerosol triggers high levels of protease enzymes that break down lung tissue, potentially leading to emphysema, with some evidence showing it may be as damaging as, or in some cases more harmful to lung tissue than, tobacco.“

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 16/02/2026 22:31

Are you vaping when you are around your family or only in private?

It's pretty annoying for other people to be around, so they may just find it difficult to be around you if you're doing it when you're with them. Or they're just worried about your health.

Ultimately, it's your choice. If you know the risks and choose to do it anyway, then that's your choice. Can't you just tell them that you've given up to get them off your back?

frothycoffee2 · 16/02/2026 22:31

I’m the same as you op. I wish I never started to be honest. It’s stupid to vape as a non smoker but I suppose it’s the same question as why would anyone start smoking? Or start drinking? It starts with curiosity and before you know it you’re hooked. There isn’t enough long term evidence for the health risks but imo vaping is better than smoking and not vaping is (obviously) better than vaping. Lots of things are bad for us. Pick your vice I guess.

I don’t vape outside my home so all the comments about being anti social or looking like a baby sucking a dummy don’t bother me. But I know it was foolish to start and I would like to quit.

Mamabee9 · 16/02/2026 22:43

I don’t vape around my kids.

You've not explained what you like about it.

I think it's so sad that all these teenagers vape now. There is so much pressure on the few that don't. Regardless of whether or not you vape around them your kids are likely going to end up addicted to vaping.

The whole industry is grim. It's so annoying watching grown adults think it's ok to sneak a puff at the cinema, staff toilets at work, in pubs etc. You don't see people standing outside vaping often, the way smokers used to, because they are so entitled they can just do it in plain sight.

I feel the same as your family and would want you to quit. However, I agree it's likely not worse than any bad habit like drinking a bottle of wine every night, getting takeaways for dinner each night etc.

Don't vape around your family - they obviously don't want to be around it.

Well it would probably cheaper ans possibly safer to get some random chemicals around the place and injest them sure your body if you want to think of it like that?l, Not sure what being a single mum had to do with it there is millions of those

Elizabeta · 17/02/2026 07:30

It’s gross and stupid.

My DS vapes, he used to smoke, he’s just moved on to half normal and half lower strength vapes and his plan is all lower strength then half lower strength , half no strength then no strength and gum.

Mamabee9 · 17/02/2026 11:02

I don’t vape around my kids or family.

I vape. I started vaping to help me stop smoking, so see it as a positive thing.. Not sure why a non smoker would start. Do you use 0% nicotine?

Have you tried the lower strength vapes?

TheGrimSmile · 17/02/2026 14:05

Vaping can cause strokes in young adults. Why put yourself at risk.

DaisyChain505 · 17/02/2026 14:28

It’s bad for your health.

It’s expensive.

It sets a bad example for your children.

It looks awful.

Why did you start smoking? Everyone knows vapes are stop smoking aids but they are enjoyable as a standalone thing too. Obviously not sensible to start but it’s also not sensible to start smoking.

Johnogroats · 17/02/2026 15:32

Just why would you breathe in a load of chemicals into your lungs? There is no way that’s a good idea. I know vaping isn’t smoking…. But back in the day when my mum started smoking - in the same way - the risks weren’t known. Shame as she died of cancer in her 50s. There is no upside to vaping other than a means to get of fags. Utterly repulsive. I’m Team Family.
