To vape?

It’s my one vice and I really enjoy it. I’m a single mum but don’t vape around my kids. My family always moan on about it though and say I’m pathetic. I feel like my family always hound me over it every time we speak. AIBU?

Why did you start smoking? Everyone knows vapes are stop smoking aids but they are enjoyable as a standalone thing too. Obviously not sensible to start but it’s also not sensible to start smoking.

I started smoking almost 40 years ago, when I was young and stupid and invincible.

Starting vaping when you didn’t smoke is pathetic. Look at your self in the mirror when you vape and you will see how silly you look.

Lungs are delicate things op so l'm afraid l agree with yor family and whether or not you do it around your kids is irrelevant - if you get ill in years to come, they will be affected.

I am an ex social smoker .. on the plus side I hate the taste of cigarettes now. On the downside I find vaping worse as I can do it anytime without having to go outside.

I enjoy it but I know it’s ridiculous. Some local boroughs allow you to go on one of the Allen Carr days for free, so I am booked in on one next weekend as I do want to give up. I started at a particularly stressful time in my life. Things are calmer now and I agree it’s ridiculous so I’m hoping this works. If not I’ll try another way.

i googled “emphysema and vaping” and a whole bunch of stuff comes up that basically says it’s linked to a bunch of illnesses.

personally i reckon you'll feel fine for decades but itll get you in the end. as long as you know that it’s fine. but dont be under any illusions it’s harmless. it’s not.

“Vaping significantly increases the risk of developing emphysema and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) by causing lung inflammation and tissue damage similar to conventional smoking. Studies suggest that e-cigarette aerosol triggers high levels of protease enzymes that break down lung tissue, potentially leading to emphysema, with some evidence showing it may be as damaging as, or in some cases more harmful to lung tissue than, tobacco.“

Emphysema and COPD are horrible diseases - do you want to enjoy them in your old age. Why would you willingly make yourself a nicotine addict and put yourself at risk of these diseases? Your family are concerned.

It's fine. Crack on OP

If my family repeatedly called me pathetic, they wouldn’t see me. Personal autonomy is fucking precious, especially for women. I prioritise mine over crap relationships with people who want to control me.

Tryagain26 · 18/02/2026 18:24

Yes you are being unreasonable, it's bad for your health and expensive
I remember my mother arguing the same as you about smoking, she didn't believe it was dangerous and she argued it was the only thing she did for herself, which was true, but it eventually killed her.
Vaping might not be as bad as smoking but it's still unhealthy, find something else you enjoy that is safer.

Bowies · 18/02/2026 21:41

Family probably worried about the health effects but not expressing it well

I didn’t smoke before vaping. I tried one once and enjoyed it and just kept vaping.

It's fine - no harmful cancer causing chemicals as with cigarettes. Nicotine is found in green veg and is the equivalent of having a strong cup of coffee in the effect on the body. . In fact there's strong evidence that it prevents Parkinsons disease. I vape and will carry on as I enjoy it. Would you ask someone who enjoys a drink to stop - that would be at least half the population. That's even worse if you consider crime caused by drinking.

that’s not right. read my post above which mum38383 has requoted. it apparently contains things that break the lungs down. just as long as you know that.

my mums emphysema was likely caused by smoking (in her case a vape, shes been in that for 8 years, previously fags) the letter from the hospital said as much.

i think a little of what you fancy is fine. a few puffs on a friday night wont kill you. but puffing away all night and doing this daily is another story. same with drinking, eating fatty foods, not exercising. all bad.

we were sat outside the doctors office in the hospital after mums lung test waiting being called back in. in the interim he had his next patient in. she was stinking of stale fags so obviously a heavy smoker. Doc must have diagnosed lung cancer as her son was waiting for her and a nurse asked him to go into the room, he went in and ten mins later they both came out white faced and crying.
they sat up the end of the waiting room at a quiet section, dont know why, maybe waiting to go back in for treatment options or lack of treatment options to be explained.

so sad. we all think itll never happen to us. but it does. why risk it. that son will be left without his mum just because she liked sucking on a stick.
