Get the bottom sheets on beds completely taught?

OP posts:

Have decent lighting by a mirror in the bedroom. I don’t know how many times we’ve been away and it’s driven me nuts that I can’t apply my make up whilst DH is hogging the bathroom. There’s always a mirror in the bedroom, but always seems to be in the darkest part of the room 😵‍💫!

For this very reason, I have recently invested in a light up travel mirror for my overnight bag!

TenInSport · 17/02/2026 07:17

Have somewhere to hang coats. I get that they can't put a hook on the back of the room door as you would obscure the notices about fire evacuation routes, etc, by hanging things on it, but a couple of coat hooks somewhere in the room would be valuable!

DeftGoldHedgehog · 17/02/2026 07:17

Also why do some still have a tucked in flat sheet as well as a duvet or cover? I guess some people like that feeling of being trapped under a sheet in a 1950s school bed, but I immediately go round and untuck it at the end as I like being able to move when I sleep!

CluelessAboutBiology · 17/02/2026 07:31

@benten54too bright to sleep in, but not bright enough when you’re awake. Tiny little side lights but not a nice bright overhead light.

@ThinkingAbout2026 a glass door to a bathroom? Really? As in see-through? Thankfully I’ve never come across one of those, and hope to keep it that way.

Glass bathroom doors very common in Europe.

They also seem to like saloon bar doors - a gap of about 12 inches above and below the door.

Bizarre.

It's because the bottom sheets aren't big enough for the mattress.

Provide twin beds in accessible rooms. No idea why they think you want to share a bed with your carer

Wow! That’s awful!

benten54 · 17/02/2026 05:18

Provide a dark room. As soon as you turn the light off it becomes Blackpool Illuminations. Red light on the Tv, blue light on the aircon, random flashing lights on the ceiling in an array of colours, bedside alarm clocks all shooting piercing lights of a million lumens into your eyeballs.

Little tip I learned from MN - have a roll of black electrical tape in your bag and cover all of the annoying little lights. Plasters work too if you have forgotten the tape.

Miranda65 · 17/02/2026 09:12

BlackRoseBlue · 17/02/2026 07:05

Provide enough coat hangers without trouser clips.

Have a magnifying mirror in the bathroom.

Put makeup flannels in rooms by default.

Keep the hairdryer anywhere obvious (and while on that subject provide hairdryer with any kind of useful power).

Label the damn master switch for the lights (and have it turn all the lights off, not all the lights plus some random under lighting somewhere).

Have enough bright lighting so I can see and work if needed

Realise a glass top on a desk you advertise as a workspace stops a mouse working

let you move the phone that takes up half the tiny bedside table

and a late addition from last week’s business trip - reset the tv alarm when the previous guest checks out. I never use the tv in hotels and didn’t need a 4am wake up (presume someone had a flight to catch)

Why do you need a flannel for make up?

dizzydizzydizzy · 17/02/2026 09:12

In the case of a Disneyland Paris hotel, stop their staff from nicking stuff.

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 17/02/2026 09:15

Give you a time slot when the chambermaid will arrive, 2 hours will do.

SuperSharpShooter · 17/02/2026 09:28

Hooks! Why so few hooks? Ill never understand this, it's such a cheap and simple thing to add to a room/bathroom.

Lights, why so complicated?
It's amusing for a a cheap over night but anything longer than that and I seem to spend a stupid amount of time figuring them out.

We stayed at a fancy adults only place once and spent most evenings removing the card and sitting in the dark watching movies on the laptop because we couldn't figure out ANY of the lighting combinations to watch the TV properly 🤦‍♂️
The closest we got to 'mood' lighting was leaving the bathroom light on, door agar. Extractor got annoying after a while though.

candyfloss06 · 17/02/2026 04:40

Have aircon that switches on or off instantly at the push of a button. I seem to book hotels where turning it off turns into a big palaver and I like a quiet room to sleep.

This 💯
DH & I always have such a palaver trying to sort out the air con. We usually can’t sort it. 🙄

i’m with you re the flannels / face cloths whoever posted about that. They should be mandatory. 😀

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 17/02/2026 09:55

Have windows that can be opened to let some fresh air into the room.

tanstaafl · 17/02/2026 09:56

DeftGoldHedgehog · 17/02/2026 07:12

Cook tomatoes or black pudding properly. Correctly set up a self-service toaster so that the bread only needs to go through once, instead of one pass = anaemic, two = burnt. Serve nice coffee at breakfast. I can make a very good flat white at home. Do better.

Can I add porridge to the list?

I’ve never seen this - I’d love to have a sheet as well as a duvet, the latter are often far too warm but I hate sleeping uncovered. I end up having to huddle under my kimono.

StarlightLady · 17/02/2026 10:01
  • Put scatter cushions on the bed that you have to throw on the floor to actually get into bed.
  • Put clean towels on the bed; you need them in the bathroom.
  • Provide a pool (or be situated by a beach) but provide nowhere in bathroom to hang wet swimwear.
  • Provide hooks for coats.
  • Check all lamps work as part of room clean between guests.
  • Provide adequate shower screens so you don’t go for a paddle if you want a wee in the night.

I totally accept not all are guilty and some are better than others here.

ErrolTheDragon · 17/02/2026 10:05

SisterTeatime · 17/02/2026 06:37

*taut

Not put cushions that have been on the floor, chairs etc on the bed where my head will be.

Just get rid of all the damned cushions from the bed. If there’s a sofa or comfy chair, a couple on there is sufficient.

SquishyGloopyBum · 17/02/2026 10:05

Alwayswonderedwhy · 16/02/2026 22:45

Just leave the duvet on top of the bed instead of tucking it under the mattress meaning the sheet comes untucked too when you remove it. And the sheet is always a flat sheet that's bit too small to tuck under properly.

This! It drives me potty!

Moxy at Edinburgh airport: when you turn all lights off except the bedside lamp, then turn off the bedside lamp lying in bed, every single light in the room (and bathroom) comes back on. When, after trying every possible combination of light switch settings, you ring reception to ask how to turn off the lights they will tell you that the light will go off by itself after 5 min of no movement, except they mean the low light that is around the bottom of the bed that helps you find your way when you get up in the middle of the night to use the toilet which does indeed go off after 5 min, the room lights don't.
I had to put a coat over my jamies and get a receptionist to help me turn them off, I still don't know how you actually do it.

Rookie93 · 17/02/2026 10:15

Why is there often no where to put toiletries in the bathroom. Where am I supposed to put my deodorant, toothpaste toothbrush etc if there are no shelves or only 3ins worktop near the sink? And more hooks to hang stuff up.

KimberleyClark · 17/02/2026 10:16

Provide showers that work exactly as you would expect them to.

LongDistanceClara44 · 17/02/2026 10:22

Was feeling sorry for myself that we can never afford to go anywhere but this thread has made me feel better by reminding me how awful hotels can actually be

Winederlust · 17/02/2026 10:23

Provide what I consider the basic necessities for a room...full length mirror, decent lighting, towels for hands, body AND hair (and ones that are big enough to actually cover your body), sockets by the bed and the mirror. Most rooms will be missing at least one of these things.
