What’s with the influx of posters researching others?

I’ve seen this a lot recently. Someone asks for advice (normal MN type post) and someone miles down in the comments will say ‘looking at all your other posts you need to sort out this and that’ - mostly a snide comment alluding to someone’s marriage being in the shit or concluding the poster has some sort of MH issue. I’m not surprised people NC every post. I might have been oblivious to this but do people generally do due dil on others here or is this new? Excluding times when a poster makes a couple of threads within days of each other and they’re recognised of course.

AIBU to think some of these posters are a bit OTT, and purposefully trying to “dig up dirt” to stir the pot?

No it’s not new. Ive had it done to me on the most innocent of threads. Some people are just sad gits.

LightYearsAgo · 16/02/2026 18:13

Not new at all, the search option is there, of course it will be used

Am I the only one who doesn’t know how to do this? Feeling left out now 😂

DestinedToBeOutlived · 16/02/2026 18:16

I've had it done to me a few years back.

I was asking for advice about a completely unforseen financial situation I was in, and someone dragged up a post from 18 months earlier where I had bought something a bit frivolous.

Coffeetimes3 · 16/02/2026 18:16

It used to be done way more before people could name change so easily. I've done it myself but only when I have suspicions that someone is a troll.

I get those to an extent - when the thread is so wild it prompts someone to check. But today I’ve seen at least three threads where it was a regular thread, nothing out of the ordinary and someone’s decided to do a background check 😂

It is the risk of posting online. NC regularly helps. Also every now and again deleting your account and starting again.

Yup. Been going on as long as I’ve been on here and thats about 14 years. Sad gits is my assessment too.

What is new is accusing posters of being an AI bot. I’ve been accused of that. Even sadder gits. Swings a change from being accused of being a troll I suppose.

In support there are a lot of fourth rate Columbos on here.

CarlaLemarchant · 16/02/2026 18:21

I don’t search an OP generally but I have a couple of times, once when I was fairly sure it was a load of made up rubbish, the second when someone was posting about a legal news story so passionately and in such incredible depth I suspected they were one of the people involved or representing one of the people involved though they were adamant they were just an interested member of the public.

I absolutely cannot be bothered to do it often though, even I think someone is lying through their teeth. I just leave the thread.

wanderingstarz · 16/02/2026 18:21

Sometimes it helps though. There was a thread yesterday that was a load of bollocks, proved by the OPs previous thread. Yesterdays thread was deleted for trolling I presume.

There was one about drinking someone else’s drink (the comment that made someone do a check got deleted because it was clearly trolling), there was a relationship one where someone was talking about an argument and then someone checked their username and said something along the lines of ‘you have a lot more going on in your relationship than this’ etc

Yes it is those that would tempt people to check out the posting history. Personally I mostly cannot be bothered to check but when an OP is posting about a sensitive topic and people are sharing personal stories, I am glad if someone else calls them out.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 16/02/2026 18:26

It’s always happened and I have done this in the past. I don’t do it now.

Sidebeforeself · 16/02/2026 18:26

I’ll share my story. Many years ago I posted that a Royal baby didnt seem happy and cute in a photo (in response to a lighthearted thread) and somebody “researched” me and said I had previously said that all babies are cute including my own.

This was perplexing as Ive never had a baby so concluded they had mixed me up with someone with a similar username. But what an odd thing to try to catch me out on!

Mysterian · 16/02/2026 18:34

I don't trawl though their history...much, but a quick check to see if somebody's genuine sometimes.

By the way OP, did you get that tattoo of Bluey with the face of Liz Truss removed or covered in the end?

Hahaha that’s exactly the type of posters I’m talking about!

I have one username which I post on active threads under and I don’t change that to comment. I do however NC if I make a thread, purely because I don’t want people to link me to a thread about my kids illnesses or TTC threads from years ago - I use MN in two ways: discussions and then seeking advice but the two are separate

Version876 · 16/02/2026 18:50

I change mine quite frequently. Keeps it fresh especially if I post in salary/how can I earn 200k type threads.

I have used the advanced search a couple of times. That’s what it’s there for. Both times the person’s posts were removed. Both had name changed to target me because of something I had posted in a completely different thread! One was a PBU. The other was just unhinged. I think it’s actually useful so that people don’t get drawn in to a made up drama.
