To worry about sharing drinks

Princessdiaries · 16/02/2026 16:04

Was out on a very busy Saturday night - bar was packed. Put my drink down and picked up what I thought was mine, took a few swigs and thought this tastes sugary as I had soda. Realised it was a random man’s drinks and now have been feeling disgusted that I’ve shared someone’s saliva and backwash.

AIBU to think I’ve caught some sort of disease? My throat has been sore since and had a tickle in the throat but also could be the fact it was freezing Saturday night.

if you caught any sort of bug it would be more likely from being out with other people than from a swig of someone’s drink. Unless you saw the owner of the drink and they were obviously unwell?

But seriously, I wouldn’t give it a second thought. I hope you apologised and bought them a new drink though?

How do people like this function?

Simonjt · 16/02/2026 16:10

You’ll be fine, in all likelihood you’ve probably shared more than a drink with a stranger previously.

I thought the very same thing.

Ablondiebutagoody · 16/02/2026 16:17

Reminds me of the student "mine sweeping" days

catsarethefuture · 16/02/2026 16:17

Did you let the poor bloke know so he could avoid being equally disgusted?

QuietLifeNoDrama · 16/02/2026 16:19

This is a huge overreaction and you should probably consider seeking kelp for your health anxiety

SirQuaverofSkips · 16/02/2026 16:26

Nothing will happen. Imagine you got drunk and snogged him. You'd still be alive in the morning.

A more serious point though is for the love of god be careful where you are putting your drinks and keep an eye on them. I never leave a drink unattended and would not put it down on table with strangers drinks because drink spiking is rife.

DayManAhAhAh · 16/02/2026 16:30

Hopefully you haven't caught HPV or anything nasty. Would probably get checked if it was me.

DayManAhAhAh · 16/02/2026 16:32

Also I dont think a freezing night would give you a sorry throat. Ugh, youve definitely drank his back wash 😫

She shared a drink, she didn’t lick a coldsore or anything below the belt.

puppyparent · 16/02/2026 16:47

You’ll be fine OP

If it makes you feel any better, at a party once I took a swig from what I thought was my bottle of beer and then realised it was actually the bottle into which everyone was dropping their cigarette butts. Alas I survived

You don't catch HPV from sharing a drink.

Still, imagine the germs 😫 god knows where his mouth was before.

Seriously? You’d go to the doctors because you took a a few sips of a drink? And demand what, blood tests? A vaginal swab? No wonder the NHS is on its bloody knees.

TY78910 · 16/02/2026 16:51

I wouldn’t worry about the backwash. I’d be worried about spiking.

Honestly, you don't need to worry about sipping a strangers drink.

Did you touch any door handles on the way in? The bar? Any tables in the venue? Did you sit in a taxi on the way home?

Life is germy. Don't worry about it, unless you're immune compromised your body is equipped to deal with it.

TY78910 · 16/02/2026 16:57

@DayManAhAhAh feeling like getting a bit personal today? It’s only Monday.

God knows where OPs had been and the poor unsuspecting man had to deal with her inability to be able to identify her own bloody drink.

Did you tell him OP? Was he as upset as you about it?

Tetchypants · 16/02/2026 17:02

Hope you replaced his drink @Princessdiaries. Aside from that please be more careful about leaving your drink unguarded.

ColdAsAWitches · 16/02/2026 17:05

Imagine if she had kissed him! Do you make your partner swill with bleach before you go near him?

Princessdiaries · 16/02/2026 17:06

Gosh didn’t expect to spark a full blown argument on MN today.

to all those concerned, I absolutely replaced the drink. I apologised, and bought us both a fresh drink, he found it funny.

What disease do you think you could caught apart of common cold 😬😆
