To be annoyed I had to watch GB News to see coverage of anti women protestors at Southwark

A mother, Miranda Newsom, had her gym membership suspended for a year after reporting an "unmistakably male" trans woman in the female changing room.

Why isn't this on the BBC? The reporter in the video is doing genuinely impressive investigative journalism, didn't we used to have the national broadcaster to do this sort of thing?

That's not true. Sonia Sohda was consistent, vocal and brilliant about it in The Observer and The Morning Star carried a lot about it.

Yes I totally agree with that, but she is very much the exception not the rule. And the Observer doesn't exist any more.

The left leaning media don't want to cover this. They don't want to admit that letting men into women's spaces impacts women's rights.

Is all the media except GB News left wing?

NumbersGuy · 17/02/2026 03:48

GB News is known for its right-wing, opinion-led format. Its reliability is a subject of intense debate, with critics pointing to frequent regulatory breaches, while supporters value its alternative, anti-"woke" perspective. A big sponsor of the TERF Island Council. BTW Reuters is pretty much stand-alone in ethics.

"Lowest Trust Rating: According to the 2025 Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism survey, GB News has the lowest trust rating among UK broadcasters, with a net trust score of -15."

I'm guessing the bit about sponsoring the "terf island council" is too hallucinatory even for the AI that generated the preceding text and you crowbarred that in yourself?

The BBC’s left wing bias is shameful and driving many people to the likes of GB news. If the BBC was doing their job there would be no need for GB news.

The posters on here saying the OP is causing division are causing division themselves by believing only their own opinion is correct.

Everyone having the same opinion is group think and incredibly dangerous.

The need for GBeebies is created by some people being nasty, bigoted and rather stupid.

I think part of the reason that this particular topic gets so much focus on MN is that for years it was basically impossible to discuss it anywhere else, even in the most reasonable, measured, kind terms. If women could have said 'hey, seems a bit off to have a male in a women's prison' in 2017 without being met with death threats on Reddit, or similar, it might be a bit less laser-focused on that.

This

SwearyBeary · 17/02/2026 09:23

Disturbing how many posters are willing to insinuate that safeguarding women and children is a right wing, or even far right, issue.

Do they actually understand the roots of left wing socialism? What class analysis is? We're not America. Our political left is supposed to be able to criticise capitalism and individualism.

Whatever the boys club and the privileged girls say, whilst men continue to pose the threat that they do, women are going to need space away from them. Why are you wanting to hand issues like this to the likes of Reform? Or is that the whole point? Are half of you undercover for Nige?

And, fuck, I want to live in a country where this is news. I would like to lose half the sycophantic celebrity gravy train stuff to give space to a story about the rights and safety of a whole section of society being compromised. Policies imposed from the top tend to affect ordinary people far more than those cushioned by privilege. The media ought to be holding the elite to account, instead they are the elite.

The BBC stopped being impartial and the bastion of high quality journalism when it got taken over by the ‘be kind’ men can be women nutters some years ago.

Sad but true.

Yes! When did extreme narcissistic individualism become a “left wing” cause? It’s mind-boggling nonsense.

I’m used to lazy or secretly misogynistic men on the left paying lip service to women’s rights while not bothering to do anything. But where does this ferocious new energy for actively opposing women’s very basic rights, eg to privacy and safety, come from?

LeftieRightsHoarder · 17/02/2026 10:31

Verytall · 16/02/2026 10:46

Anyone with a penis is a threat to you. Presumably then you don't go to a gym, because you wouldn't be able to walk down the street, through the reception or use the facility once you're there, because there will be penis owners in all of these places?

That’s a very feeble argument. Men have the same right that women do to be in public places. They have no right to be in women’s single-sex spaces, and they have no harmless reason for wanting to be in them.

SwearyBeary · 17/02/2026 10:36

"Ferocious new energy" is exactly it.

Has somebody employed a group of people to do this on MN?

Because I don't see this reflected IRL. Even my friends who believe in gender ideology hold some pretty sensible/TERFy views alongside.

LeftieRightsHoarder · 17/02/2026 10:41

JHound · 16/02/2026 10:41

If only GB News felt it newsworthy - why are you singling out the BBC when it seems most news outlets felt it not worth reporting on.

Because the BBC is our national broadcaster, which has a duty to report important news. The erosion of women’s rights harms all women. Efforts to stop this erosion are important.

Yeah.

Seems more of a case of BBCDS.

Women's rights and the erosion thereof are important and should be reported on.

A woman banned from the gym because she "got agitated" (her own words, not mine) to the point the police were called is not important news and has only an ancillary connection to the fight for women's rights.

The fact that single sex changing rooms are important doesn't give anyone the right to kick off at other members of the public and having to have the police intervene.

The fact that Miranda was right and the man was wrong for being in the changing room is not a cover for bad behaviour, a carte blanche to do what you like, nor an excuse to avoid natural consequences. Shouting at someone in the changing rooms is likely to get you banned from most places.

Since the terfs seem to have been allowed back in AIBU instead of being limited to the gender boards.

For those lamenting that your national broadcaster doesn't support you, there are plenty of countries where trans people aren't accepted where this stuff would make national news. You can go try them and see how well they support women just like you claim to do.

Happy that my reality isn't yours. In mine, people live and let live. Yours seems to be focused on hate and fear. It doesn't sound like a nice way to live.

Nah, I just want women to retain their sex based spaces and sports. Women have the right to these spaces for privacy and dignity reasons, away from boundary pushing men and their supporters. It’s quite simple really.

Perhaps calling people fuckwits, shouting at people in changing rooms and declaring 'anyone with a penis is a threat' isn't the best strategy for that then.

Womens sports is a new one. I remember watching someone interview TERF protesters at a sporting event. They were asked about women's sports they watched, female athletes they admired, sports they were concerned were affected, how often trans people in sports were affecting women. It was a long video. Not one could give an answer. That's how much they cared about women's sports.

Bollihobs · 17/02/2026 12:50

Google 'Halim Khan BBC News' and you'll draw a blank too.

I used to think "this is the news from the BBC' was just a phrase but apparently it's an accurate description of what "they" decide they will, and won't, report on.

Bogfrog · 17/02/2026 12:51

LakieLady · 15/02/2026 13:28

The only place I ever come across this even being commented on is MN.

None of my friends, family/IL's, or former colleagues (I'm recently retired) give a toss about it. And some of them are supportive of transpeople's right to use facilities consistent with the gender they identify as.

On that basis, I'd say it's not really something that bothers most people, and therefore not very newsworthy.

I think many people only get their news from places like the BBC and so don’t know this kind of absurdity occurs but would be horrified if they knew. I think it’s absolutely newsworthy.
