Drinkers in Spoons

TheDaringOliveNewt · 14/02/2026 09:40

I'm away and at spoons having breakfast.

Every single table apart from mine has pints going, at 8.30.

Aibu thinking it's weird?

Drinking first thing in the morning is actually really bad for you.

Firstly, you are likely to be drinking on an empty stomach which makes you drunker quicker.

Secondly, having fasted liquid through the night most people are a little bit dehydrated in the morning and alcohol dehydrates you even more.

Thirdly, unlike evening drinking, which has a natural end, drinking earlier in the day often leads to higher total alcohol consumption, as the day is "open-ended". It also affects your circadian rhythms.

So morning drinking is actually quite different to evening drinking and not in a good way.

Edited

Absolutely none of that means that "drinking in the morning is really bad for you", though.

You can drink on an empty stomach at any time of day.
You can be dehydrated at any time of day.
You can have a natural end of morning drinking by using your self-control, just as you can drink until morning if you start at 7pm.

So your points don't actually support your argument in the slightest.

Its funny because I have drank alcohol several times early in the morning and i bet that a significant amount of people on this thread judging morning drinkers drink more then I do.

Why did you go to a pub to drink by yourself?

OP posts:
Ginmonkeyagain · 14/02/2026 12:29

Sorry? You've never been to the pub on your own? Wild.

Princessofgreyskull · 14/02/2026 12:29

Ginmonkeyagain · 14/02/2026 12:24

@Princessofgreyskull But your points - it is not great to drink alcohol on a empty stomach or when dehydrated and drinking alcohol if you have other reaponsibilities later that day, while true, are not unique to mornings.

What if I was a shift worker and got up at 5pm for an 8pm shift. A 6pm glass of wine would suffer from the same issues that you identify as exclusively morning drinking issues.

Good point, and if you look at the health studies, night shift working over 5-10 years increases your likelihood of developing certain cancers, type 2 diabetes, obesity and heart disease. The theorise its because your circadian rhythms are all messed up. Add alcohol to that mix (which is a designated class 1 carcinogen all on its own) and that's not great from a health point of view is it?

Look, I dont care what people drink, they can stay pissed all damn day if they want to, it doesn't affect me. What does annoy me is when people pretend it's having no effect on health when it clearly is. At least be informed about the risks.

Alcohol affect you and makes people tipsy.

So why drink at 8am when you've got the whole weekend, can't drive safely after drinking, can't exercise etc.

Drinking alcohol is an option. So why do it, by yourself, in the morning...

Many of them start in the morning.

https://cosyclub.co.uk/whats-on/bottomless-brunch

This one in Manchester starts at 10am, for example.

10 is not as bad as 8:30 and it's with food. I personally wouldn't drink at that time though. From maybe 11 on a special occasion.

You seem really quite bothered by this - do you have an alcohol problem?

Ginmonkeyagain · 14/02/2026 12:30

@Princessofgreyskull 10/10 pass agg judgemental posting. No notes.

Lulubo1 · 14/02/2026 12:30

I used to work at a hotel and when the night shift finished work, they'd go to Spoons for a few drinks because it was their "evening" after work, even though it was 7am. Obviously, not everyone is night shift workers, but some might be.

Because they want to. It's just as valid as people on here having a drink on their own at 5pm after work.

Lots of people don't drive, or do their exercise at 5am or whatever. We all live different lives with different routines.

I don't drink, as I've said multiple times.

Is your judgement affecting your reading skills, perchance?

That’s a really pathetic childish response

Applepe · 14/02/2026 12:32

som of my work colleagues used to go to Spoons after they’d completed their night shifts for a full English and a pint. Each to their own 🤷🏼‍♀️

Here is a study for you which indicates what I said about morning drinking: https://academic.oup.com/sleep/advance-article-abstract/doi/10.1093/sleep/zsaa270/6030924?redirectedFrom=fulltext&login=false

Who said by myself. Its usually when travelling so have been up hours so 9am feels like dinner time so I like a drink with my meal.

You said you judge alcoholics. What for?

judging means you have a pre conceived negative stereotype about the thing or person you’re judging.

ie I judge the unemployed for being lazy.

I’m asking what you judge alcoholics or morning drinkers for

Rizzz · 14/02/2026 12:35

Gloriia · 14/02/2026 12:26

We can do both, judge and be grateful that we have self control and boundaries?

If judging those less fortunate than you makes you feel good, then yes, I guess you can.

Itsmetheflamingo · 14/02/2026 12:35

Princessofgreyskull · 14/02/2026 12:33

I can't read your article.

But, all the conclusion says is that "These findings have potential implications for alcohol-related accidents and alcohol toxicity." so it's obviously not as clear cut as you seem to be trying to make out.

It doesn’t say what she thinks it’s does. It’s a just a random google return

Rizzz · 14/02/2026 12:38

Itsmetheflamingo · 14/02/2026 12:27

Alcoholics.

I expect they judge all addicts and anyone with the misfortune to not have the same 'self-control and boundaries' as they do.

Horrible trait but there we are.

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 14/02/2026 12:38

You have to love the pledgers and their finger wagging on this thread.

So what if lonely old men (and presumably a few women too) with red faces drink in Spoons the mornings? They presumably want human contact and gather with other people like them. Good luck to them. As someone said upthread, they’re not going to Spoons to kill puppies. Leave them alone.

The only people on this thread “precious about alcohol” are the self-appointed representatives of the Methodist Ladies Campaign Against the Devil’s Buttermilk.

Ginmonkeyagain · 14/02/2026 12:38

@Itsmetheflamingo Is it "drinking alcohol when you have important stuff to do later is a bad idea"?

Not just a horrible trait but a total lack of emotional intelligence and empathy. Which are skills it’s hard to learn when you don’t have them.
