Drinkers in Spoons

TheDaringOliveNewt · 14/02/2026 09:40

I'm away and at spoons having breakfast.

Every single table apart from mine has pints going, at 8.30.

Aibu thinking it's weird?

Drinking first thing in the morning is actually really bad for you.

Firstly, you are likely to be drinking on an empty stomach which makes you drunker quicker.

Secondly, having fasted liquid through the night most people are a little bit dehydrated in the morning and alcohol dehydrates you even more.

Thirdly, unlike evening drinking, which has a natural end, drinking earlier in the day often leads to higher total alcohol consumption, as the day is "open-ended". It also affects your circadian rhythms.

So morning drinking is actually quite different to evening drinking and not in a good way.

People used to have beer for breakfast.

People used to have beer for breakfast.

So what? life expectancy years ago was age 40. Not sure what point it is you're making

Ginmonkeyagain · 14/02/2026 12:18

Also surely shift workers having a pint at 8am at the end of work will not had "fasted" all night. They would have had food and water during their shift.

99pwithaflake · 14/02/2026 12:18

Princessofgreyskull · 14/02/2026 12:16

drinking at 8am is no different to a 9-5 worker drinking at 8pm.

Yes it is, drinking in the morning has a worse effect on the body

How?

All I will say is that there was far less trouble when we had stricter alcohol licencing laws.
Yet another of Blairs "visions" that went arse over tit 😡

Ha! My favourite topic. Firstly it’s not true that alcohol abuse has increased with the change in licensing laws. But the relaxation of many laws (not just pub opening hours, also the sale of alcohol in supermarkets and other more family friendly premises) led to alcohol companies capitalising on the new markets available to them, mainly women who had a limited welcome in pubs prior to that.

there have always been lonely men in pubs. Pubs were a very important social hub for much of the 20th century. Society has changed now, and this has been quite negative for lonely men who can no longer trundle down the pub at 6pm and find their friends and neighbours having a drink and a pub game. Don’t mistake this for less alcoholism- the same men were alcohol dependant then too.

the big difference is their sons- who rather than joining the building site and pub after work at 16, went to college became offie workers and joined the gym. And that is what Blair was aiming for.

How?

I posted above - google it if you dont believe me. My God, people are so precious about alcohol

TheMatildaEffect · 14/02/2026 12:21

I'd rather be slightly drunk than extremely judgemental.

DinoLil · 14/02/2026 12:21

I used to love going to Spoons early doors, breakfast, magazine. I'd quite often stay until mid afternoon.

Now, I queue outside my local at 10am because Spoons don't allow dogs. Again, on my own, a single woman of a certain age. I might have an alcoholic drink sometimes, sometimes not. I'm not bothering anyone and keep to myself.

Anyway, Spoons do THE best chips!

Rizzz · 14/02/2026 12:21

Gloriia · 14/02/2026 11:21

We wouldn't we judge alkies? Nothing to do with the grace of God. Drinking at 8.30am is never a good thing. Post night shift, holibobs whatever. If they drink at that time they have a drink problem.

Well yes, quite.

Of course they have a problem.

What do you actually think the word 'alcoholic' means? 😳

So again, my question is why would we judge them instead of just being grateful that we are not them?

PrincessHoneysuckle · 14/02/2026 12:22

Time doesn't exist in there ime. it's like being in an airport.

FreeFromWhat · 14/02/2026 12:22

I don’t really understand why you would go to Spoons for breakfast if you didn’t want to drink? Surely there are more pleasant places to go for breakfast?

Egg and sausage muffin with bottomless coffee for £3.89. That's why.
Lots of other choices too at more than reasonable prices.

Our local Wetherspoons is in a beautiful old government building and the clientele is hugely diverse.

99pwithaflake · 14/02/2026 12:15

Well of course if you work 9-5 then drinking at 8am is a bad idea, but lots of people don't live that way so them drinking at 8am is no different to a 9-5 worker drinking at 8pm.

My point is, it's very easy to judge someone who doesn't fit your lifestyle and assume there must be something wrong with them.

Now what about if you don't work or drive due to retirement, but your daily life pattern is still roughly rising at 7am and going to bed at 11pm?

If you drink enough for it to affect your decision-making, which of the two times, 8am or 8pm, would have worse consequences on your life?

Gloriia · 14/02/2026 12:23

99pwithaflake · 14/02/2026 12:12

Many of them start in the morning.

https://cosyclub.co.uk/whats-on/bottomless-brunch

This one in Manchester starts at 10am, for example.

10am is early yes but 8.30 is extremely early to start on the booze. I've no idea why you can't see that.
They will be sad alkies, not shift workers.

99pwithaflake · 14/02/2026 12:14

Except lots of people do, as is evidenced on this thread.

I love a Spoons breakfast - cheap, cheerful, filling - you know what you're going to get, the service is quick and you get unlimited tea or coffee.

You, like most other people on the thread, have just agreed with me - you go because it’s cheap and quick - and that’s fine. Glad you enjoy it.

Having breakfast before my oncology appointment? I stayed in a cheap hotel and had no cooking facilities

I hope your appointment went well Flowers.

Ginmonkeyagain · 14/02/2026 12:24

@Princessofgreyskull But your points - it is not great to drink alcohol on a empty stomach or when dehydrated and drinking alcohol if you have other reaponsibilities later that day, while true, are not unique to mornings.

What if I was a shift worker and got up at 5pm for an 8pm shift. A 6pm glass of wine would suffer from the same issues that you identify as exclusively morning drinking issues.

What's weird is commenting on other people's lives

Well aren't you holy.

Along with discussing Goethe, The Traitors and numismatics, other people's lives are endlessly fascinating.

It’s a bit of an exaggeration to say it’s “really bad for you” though isn’t it? You’re describing temporary effects that will be worn off by the next day.

Morning drinking doesn’t have a special way of deteriorating your liver faster, which is what is indicated by it somehow being worse than night drinking .

We can do both, judge and be grateful that we have self control and boundaries?

Drinking early in the morning is a key indicator for a drink problem because alcohol dependent people wake up in withdrawal

youalright · 14/02/2026 12:27

Its funny because I have drank alcohol several times early in the morning and i bet that a significant amount of people on this thread judging morning drinkers drink more then I do.

Yes and they were settling in for the day as well.
