I'm away and at spoons having breakfast.

Every single table apart from mine has pints going, at 8.30.

Aibu thinking it's weird?

I don’t really understand why you would go to Spoons for breakfast if you didn’t want to drink? Surely there are more pleasant places to go for breakfast?

They do a nice breakfast, decent veggie options and the coffee is refill.

I go quite often with a veggie friend, although we go nearer lunchtime.

Used to work near Smithfield meat market. Local pub would open at 6am to serve drinks and food to the workers coming off shift. Not everyone has the 9 to 5 routine.

Who eats breakfast at Spoons! Is that all you could find

Loads of people. Spoons do a great breakfast and it's dirt cheap too.

Where else can you get a large English breakfast with unlimited tea and coffee for less than £8? Or a breakfast muffin deal for less than £4?

Loreli1983 · 15/02/2026 19:21

I worked in spoons as a student. There would be a queue outside at 8am waiting...

pouletvous · 15/02/2026 19:23

I love a drink but even when going on holiday, i dont get a drink on Spoons at the aiport in the early morning. I just can’t stomach it. Snd then to feel hungover at 10/11am

awful

Why would you go to a pub by yourself at 8am. Alcohol is expensive and the effort of going outside lol

Alcohol is a lot cheaper there than elsewhere. They also have some great bargains on their menu - the breakfasts are popular. And you can have as many refills of coffee as you like. One of my friends goes to a Wetherspoons alone regularly because he likes to take a pile of reading (New Scientist, The Economist, computer stuff) and drink cheap beer in pleasant surroundings. Some Wetherspoons pubs are in lovely buildings.

Patricia69 · 15/02/2026 19:27

Spoons is a cheap place for booze and serves alcohol all day

'Generally morning pub drinkers are people coming off night shifts. So 8am is their is their Friday night..'

This repeated story about night shift workers is just not true. I worked shifts years ago for a massive organisation and believe me after a night shift everyone wanted to get home to bed. There was no pints at 8am, well maybe for those with drink problems but for the most part no. 8am was not party time.

Years ago I went for a pint at 8.30am after a night shift,It was very much having a pint at 8.30am..never again.
Coffee and toast definitley .

Ponoka7 · 15/02/2026 19:29

So what if they are alcohol dependent? They keep people in work, pay high tax on the goods they are consuming and die early. Win, win for society. The eggs benedict in our local Weatherspoons, is as good as any. I get the miners benedict, with a side of mushrooms and the refillable decaffeinated cappuccino is a bargain. The fish and chips is cheaper than the chippy. Lots of professions would start the day with a hot toddy, or the men would carry a hip flask. None of this behaviour is new.

Well yes, there is that.

sittingonabeach · 15/02/2026 19:32

If they are alcohol dependent they may die early but probably have medical issues that will cost NHS to treat

Everyone costs the NHS if they have medical issues.

I also don’t understand why Gloriias night shift work mates are so exhausted by a days work they go home and immediately take to bed. We don’t do that at 6pm after a day shift do we?!

ridl14 · 15/02/2026 19:34

I used to live near a Spoons with a beer garden/patio out front, in a dodgy area. There was a couple who seemed to be with their grandchild, who would stop off for a pint on their way walking him to school.

I agree entirely, but then I also find it weird whenever I take a morning flight and there are families at the pub in their airport lining up pints at 7am while their kids are running up and down through the terminal.

I enjoy a drink but I confess I judge.

You've obviously never worked nights. We don't do that at 6pm though, correct.

chatelai · 15/02/2026 19:39

'spoons breakfast is good, reliable and you can see the calorie count. Their porridge with bananas and honey is my go-to if I'm travelling with work.

The people working there are unfailingly polite.

It is ludicrously cheap.

It is generally less grotty than you'd expect a town centre pub to be at 8am.

There are many occasions when one might drink in the morning stated above. It's not my thing however a lot of people I know will do it. Not all of them are alcoholics (probably).

If the 8am pint drinkers are there every day/alcoholics/terribly lonely then...isn't it better than them being alone and drinking?

My only criticism is the hiding of the toilets.

my sister works nights in a&e. I often meet her for breakfast, sometimes she goes to the gym after work, or food shopping. She doesn’t run to bed, no.

Jaxinabox · 15/02/2026 19:44

imakomododragon · 15/02/2026 18:43

My healthcare colleagues who work 12 hour nights often go for a drink on the way home from work around 8.30am.

Don’t tell @Gloriia 😂

I think it's fairly well known that to keep prices that low and still make a decent margin it's the food quality (and staff pay and conditions) that is sacrificed. Which is fine if you're ok with sausages containing 5% meat, served by students just happy to top up their uni spends. But let's not pretend Spoons is anything other than low cost, low quality.

Not everyone can afford high cost, high quality.

But also, one of the reasons Spoons is cheap is because there are hundreds of them and they have buying power. The same reason Tesco can sell things for half the price of your local independent corner shop.
