TheDaringOliveNewt · 14/02/2026 09:40

I'm away and at spoons having breakfast.

Every single table apart from mine has pints going, at 8.30.

Aibu thinking it's weird?

It is weird, but also standard in Spoons! You would see much the same on a weekday morning

PollyBell · 14/02/2026 09:41

Drinking in a pub? What next reading in bookshop? Where will it end?

Robertplantgoddess · 14/02/2026 09:42

It's weird to you and many people but there has always been people who drink early. It's just spoons allows then not to hide it.

CheeseWisely · 14/02/2026 09:42

It would be weird if you were in any other breakfast establishment, but you’re in Spoons, HQ of alcoholics everywhere, so it’s absolutely par for the course I’d say.

BitOutOfPractice · 14/02/2026 09:43

It’s not weird for Spoons, no.

TheDaringOliveNewt · 14/02/2026 09:44

Why would you go to a pub by yourself at 8am. Alcohol is expensive and the effort of going outside lol

Not weird, it’s just Spoons.

Trainstrike · 14/02/2026 09:44

Lots of people used to go after night shifts, so your morning is actually their night. But also, yes, perfectly normal in Spoons.

sittingonabeach · 14/02/2026 09:45

@PollyBell but at breakfast time?

EleanorReally · 14/02/2026 09:45

i was shocked when i noticed that
perhaps they yare finishing a night shift?
or they drink in the morning because they can

Robertplantgoddess · 14/02/2026 09:46

Social constructs etc. Would you think its weird at 5pm, midday? Other people's cut off lines vary. Also it's often single older people- company even without talking is a thing

DonnaBanana · 14/02/2026 09:49

What’s weird is going to a pub for breakfast, having kids in pubs, and queuing in straight lines at the bar but this is 2026

KvotheTheBloodless · 14/02/2026 09:49

Spoons is a night shift workers' haven! Pints after work, perfectly acceptable.

Weird for others, unless they're on a stag/hen do or similar.

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 14/02/2026 09:49

Every Wetherspoons everywhere has people drinking in the morning, so it's normal for them.

BudgetBuster · 14/02/2026 09:50

Because they are presumably grown adults with minds of their own?

Lots of people are alcoholics and wake up needing a drink. Lots of people work night shifts and want a drink afterwards. Some people might be on holiday and this might be a once in a blue moon type trip out.

Alcohol is expensive, but it's no more expensive at 8am than 8pm I would think.

Society has this thing where you can apparently only drink after 5pm which is ridiculous

HopSpringsEternal · 14/02/2026 09:50

Sadly a lot of alcoholics do this. My friend's DH has phases where he pretends to go. Instead, goes to Spoons and drinks all day

BauhausOfEliott · 14/02/2026 09:50

Not everyone is the same.

HTH.

Thepeopleversuswork · 14/02/2026 09:51

I don’t really understand why you would go to Spoons for breakfast if you didn’t want to drink? Surely there are more pleasant places to go for breakfast?

sittingonabeach · 14/02/2026 09:51

@Robertplantgoddess I suppose the assumption is that they will carry on drinking throughout the day.

Also I am a lightweight so if I have more than a small glass of wine at lunchtime at a weekend I will need a nap afterwards. So a drink or two at breakfast would signal the end of the day for me not the start (which if you have done a night shift would make sense)

gototogo · 14/02/2026 09:52

People having breakfast in ‘Spoons are either on holiday/a trip, meeting up with mates for a big day out eg birthday bash starting early, in temporary accommodation without cooking facilities etc or other “stuff” going on typically, eating out at 8.30 am isn’t a thing most people would do, even alcoholics. The only times I’ve been in, when travelling, I’ve seen groups of men on “big days out” (later than 8.30 too) my local one is pretty full by 10am and I’d say drinking alcohol is far less popular than the unlimited mugs of coffee deal here, we go occasionally when family are visiting as we can’t really fit in my house, they stay at the hotel next to ‘spoons.

sittingonabeach · 14/02/2026 09:52

@Thepeopleversuswork might not have many choices, and it is cheap.

BiscoffCheesecakes · 14/02/2026 09:54

I've never noticed this at our local Spoons at breakfast. A couple of people but most are drinking free refills of coffee/tea

gototogo · 14/02/2026 09:54

@Thepeopleversuswork

wetherspoons is cheap, half the price of the next cheapest option in my town. The nice places are more like £15 for even a modest sized breakfast, but I can confirm those posh breakfasts are being eaten with alcohol, just Bellinis rather than beer (aka posh alcohol)

Seagullstopitnow · 14/02/2026 09:54

I've had a pint with breakfast on rugby trip days. It's part of the day.

We don't sit there getting wasted

Nothing weird about any of that. But they do have an app now so you don't need to queue
