Drinkers in Spoons

TheDaringOliveNewt · 14/02/2026 09:40

I'm away and at spoons having breakfast.

Every single table apart from mine has pints going, at 8.30.

Aibu thinking it's weird?

It’s absolutely standard for Wetherspoons

EleanorReally · 14/02/2026 10:48

its good and cheap for breakfast, free fill ups of coffee for those that drink it

Spoons is just not a nice environment. Food can be OK but all the furnishings and fittings are icky,

Depends on the Spoons, I appreciate the variety eg some are former banks, art deco cinemas and then some just look like normal pubs.

Yes, the Playhouse in Colchester was a theatre built in the 1920s.

There's also a nice Spoons at the side of Camden Lock but I can't remember the name of it.

Nothing to do with snobbery: Spoons is just not a nice environment. Food can be OK but all the furnishings and fittings are icky, everything seems tired and cheap and there are always, without fail, annoying pissheads in there when you are trying to eat. Plus the man who owns it is an exploitative right wing twat.

What’s wrong with a greasy spoon if you want a good cheap breakfast?

Not everywhere has greasy spoon though 🤷🏼‍♀️

And their acceptance of a card is also low.

Plus the breakfast was actually ok

When I went to uni in Scotland there was a bar around the corner (near industrial estate) that opened at 6am, and would catch the people coming off a night shift, have a pint on their way home. I guess that may take into account some of them!

Do you drink alone at 8.30am?

With very few exceptions, I don't drink alcohol before lunch.
However, my point was about drinking alone.

Wetherspoons is full of rough people drinking right from the crack of dawn. I bloody hate those places.

I must be rough then, though i can't be that bad as they allow me to fly first class on Emirates, i studied Latin at school and manage to converse with intelligent people.
I use Wetherspoons for a hot drink whilst waiting for the bus. I don't drink alcohol so i am not in there boozing. Every Saturday night i see the same few people in there, 2 guys playing chess, a group of young women are always colouring and chatting. Every time i go during the day i see the same man either sat reading or talking and debating with some other very intelligent and wise men about everything from medical advances to local history.. I have never once seen any trouble, yet the expensive wine and cocktail bar across the road is hell on earth and needs door staff.

I've had a pint with breakfast on a boating holiday, when we had to have a very early start because of tide times.

It was 11am though, so not mega early.

And you are on holiday. These are locals

My DM goes for breakfast because she likes the refillable coffee.

Rizzz · 14/02/2026 10:53

Also, why are we judging alcoholics anyway?

I prefer the 'there but for the grace of God' approach.

All hell would break loose if we were judging obese people for eating a large, cheap fry-up.

ABeerInTheSunshineMakesMeHappy · 14/02/2026 10:53

That’s unusual TBH. Our local Spoons, and most that I visit when I’m away have people in and out all morning having breakfasts plus mid morning coffees as they finish their shopping. Yes, there will be the hardened drinkers in the corner or those that come in mid morning to meet their friends (especially on a weekend) but I wouldn’t say that’s the majority. Unless the Spoons you are in is at an airport of course !

MyThreeWords · 14/02/2026 10:53

Yes, it is weird. But also, my brain made me think the thread title was about spoons in drinks, and tackling the thorny issue of whether it is ever acceptable/safe/pleasurable to slurp your tea with the teaspoon still in the mug

50NotFat · 14/02/2026 10:54

I was out for a big birthday recently and we were having a fry up and a pint at 10am the following morning! Never done it before and not likely to become a regular thing. But I quite liked it, even though it felt weird and wrong! 😂

LlynTegid · 14/02/2026 10:54

The worst thing is that you and them are supporting the Brexit cheerleader, and a company whose policies led by cheap beer have probably led to several pubs in the area closing down.

OneNewLeader · 14/02/2026 10:56

Also people finishing a night shift. My understanding is the beer etc in a Wetherspoons is of a much higher quality than the food.

ABeerInTheSunshineMakesMeHappy · 14/02/2026 10:57

Trainstrike · 14/02/2026 09:44

Lots of people used to go after night shifts, so your morning is actually their night. But also, yes, perfectly normal in Spoons.

Finishing night shifts is a good point, actually. My husband used to work nights and would be drinking a pint whilst I had my breakfast. Maybe I don’t see the same level of early drinking as I’m not there early enough.

BeAmberZebra · 14/02/2026 10:59

The responses here demonstrate how many people don’t appreciate that many people still work night shifts and we all benefit from their activities. In addition there will be numerous reasons why other people chooses to have a drink in the morning as various poster have explained. Some very snobby and sanctimonious responses from people who have a very narrow world view. OP is very unreasonable and the number of people who agree with her is sad.

Are you in Newcastle?

Also let me tell you as a former spoonie if you want to see actual deranged behaviour go to the ones in an airport. If you were bad we used to send people off to the airport ones as punishment.

ABeerInTheSunshineMakesMeHappy · 14/02/2026 11:01

Thepeopleversuswork · 14/02/2026 09:51

I don’t really understand why you would go to Spoons for breakfast if you didn’t want to drink? Surely there are more pleasant places to go for breakfast?

Not many places as cheap as spoons though - and their refillable coffee (which to my mind is very drinkable) is only £1.69.

Wowzel · 14/02/2026 11:02

We used to drink alcohol at that time in the morning after our last shift in a series of night shifts. We'd be rampaging about til lunchtime, then bed!

NonArtArseHouse · 14/02/2026 11:03

Spoons is for getting pissed or cheapo food.

If you’re not eating a 3000 calorie 6 quid breakfast or an alcoholic, no reason to be there! 😆

Hahhahahah.

Good for you. I am imagining this is a spoons in a fancy area. Bit different!

Maybe instead of Latin, you should have studied grammar and punctuation. Just saying.

SatsumaDog · 14/02/2026 11:05

I guess it’s just the nature of the venue. I always think it’s strange to see people drinking before their early flights to go on holiday, but for some it’s part of the trip; a kind of celebratory start I suppose.
