What should my dh have done in this situation?

Dh was out doing hobby. Woman is walking a dog and it shits on some grass. Dh notices she doesn’t pick it up so he says ‘excuse me your dog has just done a shit’ she then starts shouting that it’s the fucking countryside and the dog can poo in the countryside.
dh left it there because he didn’t want to be a man arguing with a woman in the countryside but he feels strongly about the dog shit issue

But I know mn doesn’t like mountain biking men 😂

Well it’s fair comment. He can’t make her pick it up though.

PersephoneParlormaid · 13/02/2026 06:56

I think you’re getting confused with road biking, and the many hours men are absent from their families while doing it.

Egglio · 13/02/2026 06:57

He should be more worried about his mountain biking behaviours than some poor woman and her poor dog who are out minding their own business. 😉

Not really, she should have picked up the dog poo. So what if it's the countryside, her animal, her responsibility.

Bunnyotter1896 · 13/02/2026 07:02

You cant reason with the unreasonable. Therefore there is nothing he can do.
Obviously we should all pick up after our dog. But if she wont your dh cant really do anything.
Kids and families should be able to enjoy the country side too.
Having said that....there will be deer, fox and other poo there so whats dog poo added in. Folk dont pick up cat poo.
But I agree. Everyones should pick up after their dog. Some people wont. Its slightly annoying but not your husbands job to fix.
He cant argue with every stranger about it. He made his point and she didnt agree. He has to accept that imo.

RockyKeen · 13/02/2026 07:03

I think countryside has a different to a city because shit is good for plants , flowers etc .

RhaenysRocks · 13/02/2026 07:05

I think your dh was right to.leave it given the circumstances of a man and woman alone in the middle of nowhere. She was definitely in the wrong but i can just imagine the reverse:

Out in the middke if nowhere, dog did a shit...it's literally the middle of a field so I decided to leave it to decompose naturally. A man came and started aggressively arguing with me. I felt frightened and vulnerable. I know I was technically in the wrong but AIBU to think the man should be more self aware and not challenge a woman alone ..much like men should cross the road and not walk behind women.

Bet the responses, whilst telling her off about the dog, would agree with her point.

EleanorReally · 13/02/2026 07:07

how to vote?
my dog rolled in some dog shit yesterday
i do wish people would pick up after their dogs

EleanorReally · 13/02/2026 07:07

dog shit is bad for the environment

Shedmistress · 13/02/2026 07:10

Maybe carry some poo bags and offer them to people pretending that he thinks they forgot their bags that day? If he was really concerned he could pick it up himself.

Unfortunately this is not true, parasites and bacteria in dog poo can be harmful to livestock if they eat grass infected by them, causing illness and even death of the animals.
Yes farm animal manure is used as fertiliser but livestock is kept out of ground that is fertilised with manure for weeks after to minimise any threat to them.

Silverbirchleaf · 13/02/2026 07:15

What is it at the moment, with people losing their heads, and f-ing and swearing. Seems to be a lot on mn the moment (petrol pump, spilt coffee threads etc).

If the poo was on a path, he had a point. If it was on a grass verge, away from the path, then that’s pretty normal, especially in a rural environment.

Pricelessadvice · 13/02/2026 07:17

We have a farm with a public footpath that runs through it. The amount of dog walkers who don’t pick up after their dogs because “it’s a farm” enrages me.
Every single day I’m dodging piles of dog shit on the way to the fields with the horses.

Some people are just lazy skanks.

Why does it matter?
The point of the thread is an anti social entitled dog owner.

Haha what?! Dog shit is toxic whether it’s in the countryside or not. Horse shit is a good fertiliser in both the countryside and the city.

Katemax82 · 13/02/2026 07:19

Some bloke let his huge dog shit right next to a bread stall in a market town and was going to leave it until my husband called him out. The man was like "ooh I didn't realise!" (Bullshit) He did pick it up. Disgusting people need calling out

Sajacas · 13/02/2026 07:21

He did the right thing. He pointed out the unacceptable/ anti-social/ irresponsible behavior and didn't escalate things when the other person reacted unreasonably.

beAsensible1 · 13/02/2026 07:23

I went for a 20 minute walks yesterday and must’ve passed 20+ dog poos on the pavement on trees on corners. It’s fucking disgusting and I’m so over all of it.

he was absolutely right

Onleemoi · 13/02/2026 07:24

i don’t think there’s much else he could have done. He challenged her, she didn’t care. I think he was right not to carry on an argument. Only other option I can think of is if he feels that strongly enough about the dog shit issue he could pick it up himself.

TimeForATerf · 13/02/2026 07:25

I’m with DH. Dog shit, fly tipping, litter and graffiti will be the death of me. I hate them all with a passion. They are all equal in my eyes.

No it's not good and if there's livestock anywhere particularly cattle, it's really dangerous for them.

Dogs shit isn't. Wild flowers tend to prefer low nutrient soils so 'fertiliser' will kill them. It disrupts the nutrient balance of the soil as well as containing toxins etc. It's pollution.
