What should my dh have done in this situation?

Dh was out doing hobby. Woman is walking a dog and it shits on some grass. Dh notices she doesn’t pick it up so he says ‘excuse me your dog has just done a shit’ she then starts shouting that it’s the fucking countryside and the dog can poo in the countryside.
dh left it there because he didn’t want to be a man arguing with a woman in the countryside but he feels strongly about the dog shit issue

I think countryside has a different to a city because shit is good for plants , flowers etc .

No! It means someone else walking their dog stands in it. Dog poo is toxic to humans and other animals

He was right to call her on it. Can't force her to behave responsibly but he was right to try.

prettydesertflower · 13/02/2026 07:36

I wish your husband lived near me. People who don’t clean up after their dogs are very irresponsible. Choose to have a dog, look after it’s toilet needs. The dogs can’t clean up after themselves.

He did the right thing. I'd have probably made a sarcastic reply as I cycled off, saying I hope she trod in someone else's dog shit then. It wouldn't have helped the situation, but I can't always help being sarky to unreasonable people.

Please Google "is dog poo bad for the environment" and you will hopefully see that this is completely wrong.

What is it at the moment, with people losing their heads, and f-ing and swearing. Seems to be a lot on mn the moment (petrol pump, spilt coffee threads etc).

If the poo was on a path, he had a point. If it was on a grass verge, away from the path, then that’s pretty normal, especially in a rural environment.

No it isn’t. I live rurally and locals generally pick up the shit. Kids run through the fields and don’t stick directly to paths. They step onto verges. Dog shit is toxic and harmful to farm animals. There are lots of reasons to pick it up. People living rurally hate it when people don’t pick it up
OP, I think your dp was right to challenge. He didn’t do it aggressively and left it after her reaction and didn’t push it any further. If say that’s fair enough.

No no no. Because dogs eat meat, their waste is not good for conditioning soil in the way that horse and cow manure are.

So the woman was wrong in several ways.

CopeNorth · 13/02/2026 08:26

I’ve got two dogs and cannot understand why people don’t pick up after theirs. I wish I was brave enough to say something sometimes. The amount of dog poo I’ve walked in while out walking my dogs! Smeared on pavements, ruining beautiful countryside paths. People who leave it in fields growing crops!

Is it because they let them off the lead and are not watching them? I just can’t understand it.

My biggest irrational paranoia shame fear is someone seeing my female dogs do a sit down wee, and they then think they’ve done a poo and I haven’t picked it up! 😂🤦🏽‍♀️ I saw someone post a photo making that accusation on a local facebook group once and the alleged culprit responded to say that’s how female dogs wee 😂

Depends on the countryside.

Some of our most sensitive environments, heathland, shingle etc, depend on the poor ness of the growing environment. Dog shit is ruining some heathland, which doesn’t attract the same sort of wildlife shit that woodland, grassland etc attracts.

But then mountain bikes probably aren’t the best, either, in different ways.
