If all civilised countries including Monaco, Switzerland, Ireland, US etc could agree this, the world would instantly be a better place.
The billionaires who love their billions more would have to give up their passports and be at the mercy of dodgy regimes.
That is the only rationale thing to do now if you look at history. It’s not appropriate that some individuals are now more powerful than governments. I think that should be the Epstein lesson we learn. Shares in these billionaire companies would be owned by the governments and into large sovereign wealth funds immediately.

No-one here is blaming immigrants. If immigration is too high, it actually harms the employment prospects of 2nd and 3rd generations.

I knew a black British guy who said employers were choosing to recruit Poles over young black Brits, especially young men. This was a few years ago. We need to focus on the people that are here already, that's the point.

(I love Poland btw, but they hardly let anyone in).

Edited

Given that employers can't pay Poles (or anyone) less than locals (NMW), what do you think is the reason for this?

Why should he? He said what he believes to be right.

If he announced that all black people are stupid, or all women are weak, and believed that to be right, would you expect an apology?

This wasn't a question for me, but I wouldn't expect an apology, no.
It's free speech after all.

Would I conclude that he's a c..t? yes, of course. But I figured this out a very long time ago.

It is pretty clear that the super rich are to blame for vast inequality, mass immigration and climate change. It is also pretty clear that these super rich not paying tax at all or at ridiculously low amounts - well their days are numbered. So they are causing division in various countries just to feed their own greed. And I guess fear of inevitable persecution. Would be better if they just offered to pay their fair share, all of them. That would lead to less inequality and less immigration.
He needs to put his money where his mouth is!

They can pay Poles less than locals if the locals would want more than NMW to do the job but Poles will do it for NMW.

You say that as though it’s ever been policy to encourage people not to work. Plus most people would rather earn a living.

So as a general rule taxation discourages behaviour whether that be tobacco tax, sugar tax, VAT on school fees or you could even argue that speeding fines are a form of tax to discourage speeding.

Subsidies or benefits are designed to encourage behaviour whether that be heat pumps or EV cars.

Now guess what happens when you increase taxation on companies employing people (NI increase) or on individual workers whilst at the same time paying benefits to people not working or those on incapacity benefits?

I’m not responding to condescension, sorry.

It's a very valid question though.

Would you respond to it if you didn't interpret this as condescension?

Well, it makes a massive error. Benefits aren’t paid as an incentive not to work. They are a diffferent category from subsidies. So the question is a bit moot.

Benefits certainly weren't designed to be an incentive not to work. But they act as such for very vast numbers of people, especially at a lower earning scale

For a few, maybe. Mostly that's nonsense though.

Yes, exactly. I think that's what's been happening. So jobs that should be paying more, like care work, are held at minimum wage because people coming into the country are willing to work for those wages.

Surely there are no longer people walking around who believe that BBC Verify is impartial! What a joke, It's for simpletons who still believe the BBC has no agenda!

God love their simple minds and hearts!

The only way in which it might be useful is to believe the exact opposite of what it "verifies"

I know. The idea of the BBC 'fact checking' anything is laughable. I used to think the BBC was impartial but that was a very, very long time ago.

OK, lets just carry on paying millions in welfare to young people who don't want to work, accept that we have a scrapheap of older people who employers won't invest in and carry on importing cheap labour for the employers to pay minimum wage.

Meanwhile lets not invest in our infrastructure to cope with the extra people or the mental health and financial crisis created by having so many people out of work.

Sounds like a great plan.

OR we could be serious about getting our own people to do the work that needs doing. Labour have talked about this. It won't be easy, but it needs to be done.

So still no ideas how this might be done?

I'll ask again... How would you get people who don't want to work (for whatever reason & no or limited skills) to work in a care home, to work in construction etc etc?

No we shouldn't keep importing people, i never said that nor implied it.

i'm also all for investing etc but people don't really want that, they want low taxes and great public services.

An Insurance system to pay for health improvements is just another tax but administered by private sector, who will take a large cut in profit & doesn't address that many young people don't want to work in Health, all that study & responsibility to earn 30k per year and by the time you pay for parking and student loan your take home pay is little more than the NMW.

Alexandra2001 · 14/02/2026 06:33

Yes, exactly. I think that's what's been happening. So jobs that should be paying more, like care work, are held at minimum wage because people coming into the country are willing to work for those wages.

Care work pay is poor because Councils offer very little for the care packages they want, so it gets progressively harder for care agencies to make a profit, complex care packages are often turned down by the Agencies.

We moan like heck that Reeves has raised tax, that council tax keeps going up... thats why the pay is poor....

IF pay was increased, we will then be paying relatively low skilled care workers similar amounts to degree level Physios Nurse etc so we'd need to up their pay too...... more tax raises and calls from the 'right that Labour give pay rises to their Union mates!

Oh and good luck finding Polish people who want to work in the UK now..... its Africans and Asians now.... who get blamed for "colonising" the UK.....

Can any of you give an example where they have corrected a fact and given something untrue? Verification isn’t about opinion it’s about facts. They are either true or not. Show an example of them giving an untruth instead if you can - otherwise saying you will believe the polite just makes you look like you don’t understand what a fact is.

BBC verify be popular with people seeking to confuse.

If the FA and the Premier League/EFL had a proper director and owners test (aka fit and proper persons test), he would fail it.

Mind you he would not be the only one to fail, indeed probably a majority of football club directors would.
