To be madly in love with my pet

Wanted pets all my life but wasn’t allowed as a kid and lived abroad after uni for a long time which means I have only just recently been able to become a pet owner.
My cat has improved my life so much. She gives me so much love and company, she makes us all laugh as she is so funny and silly, we couldn’t imagine not having her. I sometimes stop to look at her and sm mesmerised by her beauty and cannot believe we have this gorgeous animal as part of our family.
She has been a great addition for DD too, she loves her to bits.

Am I ott to think she has improved our lifeand to never want to be petless again?

Are you sure she’s a cat? Every cat I ever had and loved was a right hard-to-get bastard 😂😂

BoredZelda · 12/02/2026 12:42

YABVVU not to include a picture.

Spidey66 · 12/02/2026 12:46

My dog is definitely my best friend….and I’ve got a husband!!!

Here she is with Birthday Bear Bertie. She was 7 last weekend and got a(nother) soft toy. She loves soft toys!

We are all obsessed with our cat but I wouldn’t say I’m in love with her, that’s going a bit too far.

I’ll be very sad when she dies (she’s 13 so getting on a bit), but I expect once a few months have gone by we’ll offer our home to another moggie and love them just as much.

I could never equate love for a human family member to that of a pet.

Awwww she's cute @Spidey66 Smile

I didn't even intend to get my cat. She's been abandoned in a garage when her owners did a runner from her rental property. My neighbour is the girlfriend of the property owner and took on the task of finding a home for her. She was such a tiny, traumatised little thing (the cat, not my neighbour!) that I couldn't say no....

A few months down the line, she is glossy, purry and mental like most cats are, and I wouldn't be without her! She sleeps next to me on the bed every night I am on my own. Love her to bits.

I'd love a dog too, but working full time as I do it's sadly impossible. :(

Why do people do this?! I absolutely despise people that leave behind animals like they're rubbish to be discarded! 😡

All these stories are warming my heart. It’s so beautiful how we love out pets as humans, isn’t it. I wish non pet people could all be converted!

There's a nice book called 'A Life Told In Cats' which talks about exactly this and attempts to explain how they affect our lives for people who don't get the point!

I have two cats - one who doesn't know how lucky she is to be rescued from a warehouse when she was three days old with no mum in sight whilst we were in the middle of 'the beast from the east'. She's the most grumpy so and so I have ever met, although she's mellowing slightly in her older age and we do occasionally get the odd cuddle and purr

The other is almost seven and I need time to stand still. A bit like you OP I am absolutely madly in love with her - she's honestly my best friend in the world. I don't have kids but she is the nearest thing I will ever get.

Funnily enough I asked for advice around my finances on another thread and was told that I 'can't afford pets' - I did ask if they would give a skint mum the advice to put her kids in care! I'd rather starve myself than see my girls go hungry

YADNBU.

I lost my absolutely bonkers jack russell Archie in May last year and I have never felt grief like it. We had him for almost 12 years (since he was a puppy) and he delighted me every single day. He was hilarious and forever getting into mischief 😁

DH and I aren't ready to commit to another dog for the foreseeable future and I have considered volunteering at the local rescue but I fear I would adopt all of them 😅

Tonissister · 12/02/2026 15:26

I desperately miss having a cat. DHandsomeCat died a few years ago and DH wanted to wait until we've done some travelling before getting another. I spend hours on Battersea's rehoming pages.

ginasevern · 12/02/2026 17:54

@Ilovelurchers "I didn't even intend to get my cat. She's been abandoned in a garage when her owners did a runner from her rental property."

That's basically how I "inherited" my beautiful ginger tom. I'm on my own too and he sleeps on my bed every night. I look at him every day and can hardly believe he's in my life.

zurigo · 12/02/2026 17:58

OP you are unreasonable, because you haven't paid the cat tax. Any post about a cat MUST include a photo! Pay up 😁

My Maggie is the Best Dog Ever. Fact, not opinion.

Skates · 13/02/2026 20:16

I get this post. Animals are interwoven in our life’s. It’s believed we started domesticating dogs about 15-20 thousand years ago and cats about 9000 years ago. Iv always had dogs. Even growing up we had staffs. Dogs are wonderful companions. Their love is unconditional.

PinkiOcelot · 13/02/2026 20:34

I’ve never had a dog before. I lost my mam 2 years ago and ended up buying my dog from a breeder as she’d served her purpose and was getting rid of her. I think she rescued me as much as I rescued her. She’s my best friend and I absolutely adore her.

XMissPlacedX · 14/02/2026 10:16

My Jack Russell is my little prince. He is intelligent, naughty, a bit fiery too but so loving with me. Before him I had a spaniel for 18 years who I’m pretty sure kept me from getting into trouble in my teenage years ( I left home at 17 and didn’t go on what would probably have ended up dangerous nights out because I didn’t want to leave ddog alone). Can’t imagine my life without animals playing an important part in them. Come to think of it , previous ddog is my longest relationship lol

MasterBeth · 14/02/2026 10:21

Enjoy your cat. I'm glad it brings you joy.

Personally, I think it's gross and creepy to use language like "madly in love with" an animal. Love is a reciprocal emotion. Your cat doesn't love you back.

Thepeopleversuswork · 14/02/2026 10:23

I’m also completely in love with my two cats as is DD. About 75% of our conversations revolve around them. I honestly don’t know how I would cope without them in my life.
