To be madly in love with my pet

Homeiswherethedogsare · 12/02/2026 08:04

Wanted pets all my life but wasn’t allowed as a kid and lived abroad after uni for a long time which means I have only just recently been able to become a pet owner.
My cat has improved my life so much. She gives me so much love and company, she makes us all laugh as she is so funny and silly, we couldn’t imagine not having her. I sometimes stop to look at her and sm mesmerised by her beauty and cannot believe we have this gorgeous animal as part of our family.
She has been a great addition for DD too, she loves her to bits.

Am I ott to think she has improved our lifeand to never want to be petless again?

Yanbu! My user name is true to life, and dcat completes our family! ❤️

FiveShelties · 12/02/2026 08:57

Love my Sheltie, but she is getting old at 13.5 years and has slowed down dramatically over the last 6 months.

Have had dogs all my life and cats as well - all have added greatly to my life, they make my house a home.😁

Myswweetchild · 12/02/2026 09:06

YANBU ❤️
I never had pets growing up, and never particularly wanted one.
Then as an adult, my ds got a dog and omg, I was besotted. I went part time at work so I could share his care, then eventually took early retirement. Best decision ever.
Had to have him pts 2 years ago now. That killed me but really just shows how much I loved him and wasn't prepared to see him suffer.
I'll get another when I'm ready 💔
Enjoy your pets, folks - it doesn't last forever ❤

WaddesdonWanderer · 12/02/2026 09:28

Ah OP, I’m so happy for you and your cat 😻 Cats are just the best, we have 4 and I love them dearly. We got the youngest 2 during lockdown and they were an absolute godsend. And if you think 4 is a lot, let me tell you about our vet - she has 11!

Awwww I love this OP!

I adore my cats like they are my kids, I just love them to bits!

One of my cats mended my broken heart. My previous cat died suddenly and then I had a miscarriage the same week, I was so sad and really fed up.
We adopted a kitten soon after and I became pregnant again, he sat on my bump all pregnancy and when I was in labour during the night he sat up with me all night, following me around the house while I swore and sighed before it was time to go to hospital. He sat next to me on all the night feeds. He even tried to get in the midwife’s bag when she visited. We are bonded. My babies due date was on this cats birthday, so weird!

DancingLions · 12/02/2026 09:50

I have 2 cats. I adore them. They are not in the least bit independent! I've worked from home since I got them (5 years ago) so they are used to me being here and don't really like me going out. They rush to the door to welcome me home when I've been anywhere!

We basically spend all our time together. They sleep on my bed, follow me to the loo 😂I do a lot of crafting hobbies and they'll often sit and watch what I'm doing. They're very good company. They're funny and clever in some ways, utterly daft in others! My life wouldn't be the same without them.

8TinyToeBeans · 12/02/2026 09:53

My snake is like a weighted blanket and gives so much relaxation when he chills with you. 😍

Tumbler2121 · 12/02/2026 09:58

If you haven’t had a pet before can I just advise you have her fully insured? So often come across heartbroken people who adore their pets but haven’t insured,

WelcometomyUnderworld · 12/02/2026 10:04

I could be convinced that my late rabbit was my soul mate, and my dog is my best friend (in the sense there’s no one else in the world I’d prefer to spend time with than her, when she’s not being a nightmare 😂). I’m grateful for the time I get/got to spend with both of them.

I do wonder if I’m wasting my life a bit though as my favourite thing to do is be on the sofa with a blanket and my dog…

This is wonderful.
I think my first year as a new mum would have been easier if I had my cat with me during the night wakings. I have found it really hard

YANBU, I absolutely love my pet more than anything. I have an accidental pet hare (never thought the tiny golf ball I was handed to attempt to keep alive would survive left alone decide he loved me and wanted to stay put instead of being released) and my family joke I love him more than them. I probably would not be around without him after the last 12 months it’s been the worst year of our lives for various reasons and he has given me a reason to stay around. He’s so cuddly and affectionate and has his own personality he brings me so much joy (and occasional aggravation!)

Crunchymum · 12/02/2026 11:44

My eldest cat is a "lock down" cat (I'd lost my mum suddenly a few months earlier and then we'd had to get our elderly girl cat PTS so it was very dark days for us all round)

My beautiful boy cheered us all up, was and still is such a source of comfort and peace. So much so we adopted his brother 2 years later (not an actual related brother). I now have 2 dopey, fur shedding, comical cats who are on occasion more work than the kids...... but mostly they are just pure and utter joy!!

Pets give so much and ask for so little in return. I am always telling my boys how much I love them and how happy they make us all.

My children have always had a cat in their life and although my eldest (black school uniform and white cats!!) moans about them sometimes he is the most soppy with them.

Pancakeorcrepe · 12/02/2026 12:01

Yanbu! My cats and my dogs are my entire personality 😂 I’m beyond obsessed with them

Iheartmysmart · 12/02/2026 12:04

I had a little cocker spaniel who was my shadow. He was there through my divorce, the long days of lockdown when I spent months on my own not being able to meet any of my friends or family because of the restrictions, there when my dad died and my mum was diagnosed with a serious degenerative illness. I was absolutely broken when he had to be put to sleep.

I’d been pet free for a few years when my sister called to say they’d found a pair of abandoned kittens at work and did I want one. I said yes but was a bit dubious as I’ve always been a dog person. I picked up a little scrap of a kitten, suffering from a nasty bout of cat flu and petrified of everything.

She’s been with me for six months now and I absolutely adore her. She’s totally bonkers and very loving. When I go to bed, she tucks herself into my arms and stays there all night. She has a special chair by my desk and joins in on Teams calls. She also likes playing fetch with toys and bits of tin foil. Such a character for such a tiny creature. I wouldn’t be without her now.

Homeiswherethedogsare · 12/02/2026 12:10

All these stories are warming my heart. It’s so beautiful how we love out pets as humans, isn’t it. I wish non pet people could all be converted!

Well, unfortunately for my brain I was just reading about Pasiphaë who fell in love with the family bull and hid in a cow costume to get - ahem - ‘close’ to him, and gave birth to the Minotaur.

(Planning a fantasy holiday to Crete, okay? I’m not weird, honest.)

So don’t do that, basically.

Youllnevergetabetterbitofbutteronyourknife · 12/02/2026 12:27

I absolutely adore my 7 year old Ragdoll Norwegian Forest Cat cross, Ziggi. He was meant to be a docile indoor cat, but he had other ideas! He's absolutely bonkers!! 😂 He has a life limiting heart condition which makes me so sad. I just want to love him as long as I can 🥰

To be madly in love with my pet
Mama2many73 · 12/02/2026 12:29

Always wanted a pet, but had bad allergies as a kid.
Got a large cross breed a few yrs ago and 100% love him to bits, the whole family do. Dont get me wrong he can be a little shit at times but I never imagined there'd be this much love. Those little sounds as he settles down, lying on his back legs ip sound asleep. I asked my husband the other night, as we 'aawed' over how bloody cute he is, if we'd ever not aaw him and he said nope! Always will. 🐾💗🐾💗

Zov · 12/02/2026 12:31

Awwww, how lovely. Pets do bring so much joy! Especially cats and dogs! Smile

To all of you who have dogs: do you all have flexible jobs or work from home a lot? Main thing stopping us is that we are all out all day at least 3 times a week and also more difficult to manage when we are away

Edited

I take my dog into work with me 3 days a week, there's someone home all the other days. I'm lucky i can do that though, I know it wouldn't be an option for a lot of people

Fluffypiki · 12/02/2026 12:36

Nah I agree, my cat is the most useless, dumbest animal out there (7 years in and she still looks at my son and husband like they just moved in🙄 freaks as soon as she sees them) and yet, she brings me so much joy. Between DD and I, we have billion of pictures of her and we are not even ashamed.

FuzzyWolf · 12/02/2026 12:37

Pets can be wonderful and massively enrich our lives.

I’m glad you finally got your much longed for cat.

What job allows someone to take their dog into work? Shock
