To take child out with chickenpox

DD age 3 had chickenpox. Today is day 7 since they first appeared. She's loved the multiple pyjamas days but we are starting to go stir crazy! She had new spots appear yesterday overnight and I'm not sure any of us can handle another 5 days cooped up indoors. Other than spots she's here usual self (ball of energy!) I was thinking to go out for a walk along the river. Maybe grab a quick take away coffee and cake and perch somewhere outdoors. Thinking 'covid social distancing' style rules would apply here for our own sanity surely?

Let's not pretend your sorry. If you had even a shred of empathy for people with similar conditions, you wouldn't have made this post.

And you most definitely CAN catch shingles from someone with chicken pox, it shows how little you know and are willing to risk for a bit of fresh air.

I now have permanent liver issues added to the list of life limiting conditions thanks to the parent that couldn't possibly keep their sick child in for a few weeks until no longer contagious. Not to mention the loss in salary and time with my own children.

I'm clearly wasting my breath though as you won't even listen to those that are telling you it's a bad idea. You keep coming back with excuses in favour of your needs.

Let's hope you never have to support a vulnerable family member with your selfish mentality.

From the NHS website:

Shingles - NHS

Causes of shingles
You cannot get shingles from someone with shingles or chickenpox.
But you can get chickenpox from someone with shingles if you have not had chickenpox before.
When people get chickenpox, the virus stays in the body. It can be reactivated later and cause shingles if someone's immune system is weakened.
This can be because of stress, certain conditions, or treatments like chemotherapy.

BrendaSmall · 10/02/2026 14:33

As long as no one is going to be touching your child and they’re not going to be in close contact as they’re contagious through cough droplets, then it’s perfectly okay to take them out in the fresh air!
Theyre more contagious before the spots appear than when the spots are actually there!

I took my toddler with chickenpox out to the local park but parks these days are always heaving with people, we did stop at a cafe and the service staff was not impressed at all. Life doesn't stop if you have an infection, if you're immunocompromised you stay at home but life will go on knowingly or unknowingly people will go out with infections it's on you to isolate.

I can’t stay at home forever. Life goes on like you said but people want me to stay home forever but can’t face a week-10 days with a child with chickenpox?!

TheIceBear · 10/02/2026 14:40

Exactly!
OP, take your daughter out for a walk, I did once mine were well enough when they had it, nice countryside walk did us the world of
good. I mean I’ll probably get lynched for this but I also had to the school run as not everyone has someone else to do that for them so probably risked millions of lives 🙄

What do you mean “exactly “ . Shingles is not airborne and is nowhere near as infectious as chickenpox. You can catch chickenpox from standing next to someone with it without even touching them

It's pointless because people already walk around knowingly or unknowingly with infections, it's not realistic to expect people to stay home, this is your own burden and problem.

Idealistic should do's and should be's of MN do not reflect the reality of the world.

MangoBodyScrub · 10/02/2026 14:48

You can only control yourself, you can't control what others do. If you are vulnerable, stay away and stay at home because people can harm you, without malice or intention, it's constant risk. The safest is you control your environment.

JustAnotherWhinger · 10/02/2026 14:53

The main issue with going entirely outdoors is the toilet issue.
she absolutely shouldn’t be going into a public toilet with active chickenpox.

if you’re prepared to take a potty or deal with a bush wee then fine.

if not then even outdoors isn’t ok.

JustAnotherWhinger · 10/02/2026 14:56

Some of the attitudes on this thread, and in general (especially post covid), are downright frightening for the mother of an immunocompromised child.

its bad enough that every day is running the gauntlet of encountering unknown illnesses, but the levels of selfishness now where people happily mix knowing they are contagious is horrific.

So I should isolate for the rest of my life? Who will pay my bills?

You Clearly just posted this to get a rise from people.

Complete rubbish!! Google isn’t factual or correct with a lot of things - most people had chicken pox as a child which when exposed to it again as an adult leads to shingles. You CANT catch chickenpox from shingles!!

You absolutely can catch chickenpox from shingles FYI, from contact with the lesions.

gototogo · 10/02/2026 15:10

Please don’t perch anywhere or more to the point queue to buy said food - you don’t know who is immunocompromised. Go for a remote walk but take you snacks with you

Maybe your world. In my world, luckily, people are thoughtful and considerate of others.

Designless · 10/02/2026 15:42

I guess imagine what you'd want other people to do if your child had leukaemia rather than chicken pox

Then do that

crossedlines · 10/02/2026 15:53

What’s the betting the OP pops back later to tell us she had a wonderful time, the best cake ever from a stall where there was no queue and definitely no immunocompromised stall holder, oh and there was a handy perch too!

2BarbieOrNot2Barbie · 10/02/2026 15:55

It’s interesting to me because where I live (not UK) chicken pox is not a reason to miss school. For example at the moment, there is a notice outside the school notifying parents that there is chicken pox at the school. When DD got chicken pox we did keep her off as she had a temp and was under the weather but we could have sent her to school. It’s true here for crèches too.

2BarbieOrNot2Barbie · 10/02/2026 15:57

Not saying either approach is wrong or right - just find it curious that advice can be so different

TheDenimPoet · 10/02/2026 16:00

Go for a walk somewhere there won't be other people, and take a little picnic with you. Stay outside. I know a lot of people are saying it's selfish etc, but really, how are you supposed to pass on an infection if you don't come into contact with anyone?

delightful1 · 10/02/2026 16:03

Walk in the woods nobody around yes go ahead. Fail to see the need for a coffee shop though.

🤣🤣🤣

Do you also suggest that drivers should be allowed to drive in footpaths cas its the footpath users obligation to not get runover.
🤣🤣🤣

Boomer55 · 10/02/2026 16:21

it can be a problem for anyone vulnerable or pregnant. Best stay in unless you are nowhere near other people.

You don’t stay home if you’re pregnant though .. let’s hope you didn’t cause birth defects or death by taking your infectious child out 🙄
Very ignorant and self centred.

10-20 kids die each year from chickenpox In England. A tiny percentage… but that’s still 10-20 children dead. You don’t know if the kids going to school with your child are immune compromised in some way so that catching it could lead to death.
