To take child out with chickenpox

DD age 3 had chickenpox. Today is day 7 since they first appeared. She's loved the multiple pyjamas days but we are starting to go stir crazy! She had new spots appear yesterday overnight and I'm not sure any of us can handle another 5 days cooped up indoors. Other than spots she's here usual self (ball of energy!) I was thinking to go out for a walk along the river. Maybe grab a quick take away coffee and cake and perch somewhere outdoors. Thinking 'covid social distancing' style rules would apply here for our own sanity surely?

I agree. Some people consider their own needs just for comfort and fail to do the right thing. Irresponsible parenting gets on my nerves.

SaySomethingMan · 12/02/2026 07:51

When mine had it, I could take two weeks off to chill with them, which I did. It was warm
ish though and they played in the garden when they wanted to.

Tbh I wouldn’t have seen anything wrong with taking them out for a walk alongside the canal, but I would’ve taken my own coffee if I wanted a drink. The canal is very quiet during the day, apart from lunchtime.

Contrarymary30 · 12/02/2026 08:00

I think it's fine to go for a walk outside but not places where other people are .

.

stichguru · 12/02/2026 08:02

If your child is breathing, the other people in the space they are in MUST ONLY be members of your household.NO public spaces at all, unless you are seeking urgent medical care. The person you walk past on the street could be immunocompromised and could die of chicken pox, as could the baby in the park. You either risk killing someone, or you stay home.

chunkyBoo · 12/02/2026 08:03

I’m immunocompromised, the coffee shop bit is a bit worrying, unless it’s an outside one in the park, other than that just keep yourselves to yourselves and enjoy your walk . If she starts coughing, keep her away from others, but outside the virus should dissipate quickly

dancingwhilstfacingthemusic · 12/02/2026 08:09

I’m immunocompromised due to chemo. The risk to those of us with wonky immunity is not just catching chickenpox, it’s that it can turn into sepsis and kill us. Keep your child away from others, as previous posters have said. Hopefully not too many more days.

That's effectively condemning everyone who has had aggressive cancer treatment to a glass box forever. That's not the way life works. My child was that child. 7 months post cancer treatment, he caught chicken pox at school. It spread to his brain, causing encephalitis and over a month in hospital, an extraordinarily painful lumbar puncture, a central line in his neck and over 3 weeks of anti virals that caused kidney failure but couldn't be stopped because then the encephalitis would kill him.

I'm glad going outside did your child the world of good. I hope he didn't kill anyone else while enjoying the change of scenery.

How would that posters child 'kill anyone' in the situation she sets out?

She doesn't need to be coughing near people to spread chicken pox though, it's a big enough risk anyway

How did fozziebear2 expect the coffee and cake to be obtained ?

Exactly, if it's only one person serving in a takeaway kiosk, that's presumably OK and they're fair game! 😡
Unless OP and others are expecting some kind of coffee vending machine in the middle of a forest somewhere....

It’s highly unlikely that a
child, likely with gloves / mittens and fully clothed, outside, in a countryside setting, is going to spread CP

MyTrivia · 12/02/2026 13:17

If she’s got new spots, then no I wouldn’t take her out - it’s not fair.

Or she could ask her child to stand back while she orders the coffee? She knows the risks and has proposed Covid style distancing.

This is how you spread an infection.

Helpfully I’ve been to the doctors today, sat in the waiting area as there was only one person in there with a child. I don’t know why reception didn’t do a side room as she was plastered in chicken pox so now I’ve got to fuck about speaking to haematology
brilliant

I know it’s not always posssible as some GPs don’t have them, but I always sit by the window and open it, even in winter

ScoobyBooby · 14/02/2026 16:09

Sorry OP I’m in the no camp . My son spent a week in hospital with chicken pox he was seriously unwell . I myself naively (even after having 3 other children get over it no issues ) didn’t know the true risks .

Do you have a back garden (sorry if this has already been asked !)

Hope your child feels better soon

They can’t get those vaccines

Exactly, it's a live vaccine. You cant while pregnant. Ive no immunity to rubella or measles despite being vaccinated. I'm pregnant and have to be really careful when out and about. Though rare rubella is devastating

In partnership with NHS

Chickenpox is very contagious, especially in the first few days after the rash appears. A child is infectious from about 1-2 days before the rash shows up, until all the blisters have crusted over, which usually takes around 5-7 days.

Because it spreads through coughs, sneezes, and contact with the blister fluid, it’s important to keep your child away from vulnerable people, such as babies under 1, pregnant women who haven’t had chickenpox, and anyone with a weakened immune system, until the rash has fully crusted.

For outings:

  • Best to stay at home while the child is contagious.
  • If you absolutely need to leave the house (for a medical appointment, for example), try to avoid contact with others, keep the rash covered, and practice good hand hygiene.
  • Once all blisters have scabbed over, your child is no longer infectious and it’s safe to go out for fresh air, errands, or school/nursery.
