To take child out with chickenpox

10thlittlemonkey · 10/02/2026 09:32

DD age 3 had chickenpox. Today is day 7 since they first appeared. She's loved the multiple pyjamas days but we are starting to go stir crazy! She had new spots appear yesterday overnight and I'm not sure any of us can handle another 5 days cooped up indoors. Other than spots she's here usual self (ball of energy!) I was thinking to go out for a walk along the river. Maybe grab a quick take away coffee and cake and perch somewhere outdoors. Thinking 'covid social distancing' style rules would apply here for our own sanity surely?

A kiosk will still have someone serving them though, and maybe a queue?

In the outdoors! What do you think is going to happen in the open air? Some of these replies make me worry about the world post covid, this is next level anxiety.

OP I agree with others that indoors isn’t ok but yes an outdoor walk is of course fine if she’s not rubbing up against people.

dove76 · 10/02/2026 12:35

Please don't. It's people like you that wr have outbreaks. For the sake of a few days please protect others who are vulnerable.

Yes, because viruses can't be picked up in outdoor queues. 🙄

@10thlittlemonkey You absolutely can get shingles from someone with chickenpox.

Facts chicken pox & shingles

@RosesAndHellebores - chicken pox immunity is one of the first antenatal blood tests given to pregnant women here in Australia as it DOES cause serious birth defects/miscarriage.

The OP didn’t specify drive thru cake and coffee - i expect if there was somewhere local to her where she could pick up cake and coffee without being near anyone then she’d have clarified that. (Perhaps she’ll drip feed it now you’ve put the idea in her head!)

but frankly just mentioning getting take out was a dumb idea. Aside from anything else, it’s so easy to take a drink and snack from home. And often much nicer, because if you’re relying on a totally automated drive thru for cake then you’re probably going to get something shite.

Im sure she isnt that interested in whether a drive through cake is not as good as something else, she isnt out for fine dining. What a bizarre contribution to the thread!!!

Perhaps she doesnt want a drink or snack from home, she wants something different.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 10/02/2026 12:41

Just take drinks out with you and leave the kiosk. You have no idea of the health of the kiosk worker or anyone in the queue. When I had chickenpox as a child I was off for 1-2 weeks. Until the scabs had healed up.

You are wrong. You cannot catch shingles from someone with chickenpox so it shows how little you know! Shingles is a reactivation of the chickenpox virus that lays dormant in your system until such time that is reactivated and comes out as shingles

Thats all fine and well with the general public.

It's not the same with those that have immune deficiency.

My bone marrow transplant has destroyed any protection I had from previous infection. I "re-caught" the virus from someone with chicken pox but it presented as wide spread shingles instead of chicken pox.

Immune suppressed people don't follow the regular 'rules' when it comes to illnesses. Anything is possible.

You can’t always have what you want. There’s being selfish and then there’s being selfish.

This! You are allowed to be outside when sick - covid distance indeed, no touching shared playground things etc. You seem aware of the risks with indoor activities. Enjoy the day, the fresh air will do her good.

I'm wonder how many boomers with active shingles avoid their weekly trip to to waitroes's for the 10 days they are contagious incase they bump into a pregnant lady....

This is what happened to my son too but after chemotherapy.

My DM is immune comprised, she has rheumatoid arthritis and has had pneumonia and sepsis twice now, she almost died both times. To look at her you’d have no idea she had RA.

It’s very unlikely in the open air. Yes if the toddler coughs directly in someone’s face, rubs her spots on people or handles objects that others will handle. But given she’s about two feet tall and her mother is aware to keep her away from others, op has said she’s not actively unwell beyond the spots and theres plenty of air circulating - the risk of passing it on in these circumstances is low.

I’m sure more people than you think just stay at home. I’ve not heard of anyone having shingles for a while but when they do they stay home. Not hard to do is it?

Missing the point I was making spectacularly.

The poster I replied to seems to think there is relevance in whether OP can access 'something nice' from a drive through. Complete irrelevance to the discussion.

That's unpleasantly ageist and nothing to do with your original post. I think you're just pushing back because you don't like some of the answers you're getting.

FWIW this person in that age demographic wouldn't dream of going out with active shingles. I don't shop at Waitrose and I paid for a vaccination anyway.

You can't catch singles from someone with chickenpox. As per link you provided where it says.Transmission: You cannot catch shingles from chickenpox; you get shingles from your own past chickenpox infection. However, someone with active shingles can transmit the virus to someone who has never had chickenpox,

Shingles is not airborne like chickenpox so it’s nowhere near as infectious. You catch it from contact with the lesions so it’s not as much of a concern. Seriously why don’t you just go out somewhere where there is no kiosk and avoid people at this stage. Would it kill you not to get a coffee when you are out ? Why do you keep making excuses

StrawberryJamAndRaspberryPie · 10/02/2026 12:58

Why would your three year old want to sit outside while you drink coffee? Take her for a long walk somewhere away from people - outside/countryside so she burns off energy without infecting anyone… not to a coffee shop and a street corner.

StrawberryJamAndRaspberryPie · 10/02/2026 13:03

RosesAndHellebores · 10/02/2026 12:24

I'm not sure that's the case with chicken pox. It is with Rubella but presumably you have been vaccinated.

Hello! I’m an adult who has never had chickenpox or rubella! Recent Occy Health blood test showed I have 0 antibodies for them despite childhood vaccinations. I can’t get the booster vaccine as it’s live and I’m immune compromised. More adults than you think have 0 protection from MMR despite the vaccine in childhood (it wears off if no exposure).
