Time for talented horses to take back horse roles in pantos

It’s the 21st century and yet pantomimes insist on getting two human actors to play a sad parody of a horse. Meanwhile equine actors
sit at home wondering where the next job is coming from.

The offensive stereotype of a
clumsy, ridiculous, uncoordinated beast is presented year on year. It’s insulting. Surely we’ve moved on from this? The only way of tackling this is to hand the roles over to actual horses.

And the way they portray the horse as a gauche flirt, with huge fake eyelashes and coquettish head tilts is also problematic.

FurForksSake · 08/02/2026 22:20

I think only stallions should be used.

BlackCatDiscoClub · 08/02/2026 22:23

Oh this is going to far. I'm a method actor, when I play a horse I will have lived in a field for a year, eaten oats, and carried small children long distances while leaving over fences. Its hard enough to get acting roles these days. Be better.

AmyDudley · 08/02/2026 22:26

I agree, but think this should also be extended to the pantomime cow. God knows how many unemployed bovines are out there, their talent going to waste while humans take all the roles. I'm actually disgusted, it's 2026 FFS.

Whyhaveibeencutoutofmamsnot · 08/02/2026 22:29

Can I mention productions of Dick Whittington

I went to a panto and there was a huge dance number with a song We Love Moles to the tune of baby shark and every mole was played by a child! Outrageous and offensive that the local mole actors guild hadn't been invited to audition.

I just think it’s grooming to expect anything else.

Have you SEEN Lion King?

FurForksSake · 08/02/2026 23:25

I have not seen lion king, but I don’t know how many horses are in that one?

Joey was robbed and should definitely have been a giant non-mare in war horse. Robots stealing jobs again.

See, it is exactly this equine erasure we need to resist.

That could genuinely be from the film, I haven’t seen it, so I apologise for my hate speech and join you in the fight.

Why should horses be constrained by the glass ceiling of only being able to take on the stereotypical horse role.

We shouldn't rest until there is a pony Mother Goose.

You're right, time to reign it in.

Madlentileater · 09/02/2026 20:12

I mean they talk about 'tradition' and 'commedia dell'arte' but I think a modern audience has moved beyond all that and needs to see a more authentic portrayal of a horse.

DancingOctopus · 09/02/2026 20:13

Why oh why has the laugh reaction been taken away? This thread is comedy gold.
