Time for talented horses to take back horse roles in pantos

It’s the 21st century and yet pantomimes insist on getting two human actors to play a sad parody of a horse. Meanwhile equine actors
sit at home wondering where the next job is coming from.

The offensive stereotype of a
clumsy, ridiculous, uncoordinated beast is presented year on year. It’s insulting. Surely we’ve moved on from this? The only way of tackling this is to hand the roles over to actual horses.

Also, can swans perform on pointe? On dry land?

Kindly, this reads as quite ableist. Swans are more than capable, they just need to be given the same opportunities.

I think your example is fine but the real crime is using dancers to portray swans!

How many out of work swans could be employed in a small production of swan lake. Instead we have ballet dancers, highly trained as they are, with a poor representation of the true grace of a swan.

That's all well and good in theory, but in reality swans are unreliable, migratory, here today gone tomorrow types.
If you are looking for dancers, look no further than horses, they are famously excellent hoofers.

My friend's riding school supplies the ponies for productions of Cinderella at the local theatre. The costume department dresses her up in a coachman's outfit and she leads the pony on stage. There is also another cast member dressed as a coachman who follows the coach with bucket and shovel.😂

I assume that all actors are perverts, I feel that’s the safest assumption. Animal actors are the worst, I believe the dog that played Marley in Marley in Me was a womaniser and enjoyed playing in the snow.

Pretty sure Flipper committed tax evasion.

The mechanical shark from Jaws was a sweetie in real life but was typecast ever after playing that role and it ruined his career. Such a shame.

I played a sheep in a nativity play when I was at school in 1972.

It was acceptable then but you'd never get away with it now.

So shocking that sheepface was once considered mainstream entertainment.

Soonenough · 10/02/2026 17:18

Is there any lower role for any actor than to be the back end of a horse ? Constantly bent over with another actors arse in your face . Won't you think of these unfortunate creatures ? # GoFundMe # Horses for Courses # Panto Horses My Arse . 😸

AND GIANTS!

Real dwarves play dwarves, as is only right and proper but the FEE FI FO FUM community are stereotyped in grotesque papier mache .

Blatant discrimination.

Edited

FEE FI FO FUM Community! 😆

Why is there a cat instead of this

outerspacepotato · 10/02/2026 17:25

Nay.

You're being a horse's ass suggesting such a thing.

StarlightRobot · 10/02/2026 17:57

Obviously it’s wrong and reductive to limit horse roles to pantomime. They need broader opportunities. I would start with a soap like Neigh-bours

I went to a panto and there was a huge dance number with a song We Love Moles to the tune of baby shark and every mole was played by a child! Outrageous and offensive that the local mole actors guild hadn't been invited to audition.

I mean, even Covent Garden are giving in to this blatant political incorrectness, Swan Lake being the outstanding example.

FurForksSake · 10/02/2026 18:10

I do think we need to rethink the Horse of the Year Show, it’s vile and wouldn’t be allowed for other animals. The bikini round is particularly challenging.
