to think it’s a bit depressing that women still use these terms against other women?

I’ve noticed that the harshest, most misogynistic insults on mumsnet I hear are actually coming from women directed at other women. Words like cunt, bitch, cow, etc.

When men are criticised, the language often seems much milder or at least less specifically gendered.

Is it internalised misogyny? Habit? Just how people speak now?

Cunt (although it means vagina) is used equally for men and women. Although I don’t think I’ve ever seen it on MN..I must be missing out on all the really good threads! I think there’s plenty of offensive gender-based insults for men too - knobhead, bellend, dick, dickhead, prick, needle dick (🤣)
I really don’t think it’s that deep. Insults have always used names for both male and female parts. However it really pisses me off when anyone (man or woman but esp women cos I’d expect better from them) calls a woman a slut or a slag.

Did she really behave like a bitch or a cow? I think she behaved like a childish queen bee woman.

And the c word should be banned. It is so nasty.

Cunt is used all the time in Scotland, sometimes very affectionately. A bit like mate in England

The OP us talking about women who are misogynists, not men.

Edited

I was responding to “If we’d be uncomfortable hearing men use them…”

I’m not uncomfortable with a man calling me a bitch. I’m uncomfortable with them anything that implies I should be in a kitchen or am in any way inferior, and particularly uncomfortable with the ones that rape and kill women.

There is really more to worry about than whether a man thinks I’m a “cow” or not. Like I said, not that sensitive.

Tableforjoan · 08/02/2026 20:54

I’m all for equal opportunities.

I’ll call a man or Woman a whore or a cunt.

I’ve called men slags before 🤷🏻‍♀️

If you’re acting like a twat you can be a twat.

I don’t gender my swear words.

Well I am uncomfortable with it. Different standards I suppose.

NotThatSerious · 08/02/2026 20:59

I would still call a man those words too 🤷‍♀️ it’s not that deep really

So comparing women with animals? 😬

Men get called pigs and dogs. What of it?

Liz1tummypain · 08/02/2026 21:40

I'd like to add when posters call other posters "pick me"women or "handmaids"

Brefugee · 08/02/2026 21:42

are you the SIL from the cake thread? i called her a cunt, i think, because she was behaving like one.

Evaka · 08/02/2026 21:42

I reserve my use of cunt on here for the all the cunting men being massive cunts to their partners.

Ah yes! The "feminists" are the biggest misogynists of all! 😂

You did, deservedly so 😂

I’ve just read that thread, and can’t believe OPs takeaway was that women were unkind on it. It’s not misogyny, that SIL is a grade A arsehole.

By some people. I tend to stay away from the childish name calling which people on this thread seem to think is normal discourse.

It was not my takeaway 🙄

I used that thread as an example because someone said they hadn't seen women call each other derogatory names on here.

But on that thread, what else are we calling a woman where “inconsiderate” or “rude” isn’t strong enough?

Sometimeswinning · 08/02/2026 21:59

I think we should reclaim the word cunt. Everyone else is reclaiming. I personally think cunt is not used enough!

Reclaim it? From whom? It’s a term of endearment in Scotland.

Not in England! You can use dick, ballsack no one cares, Use cunt and you can silence a whole room.

I quite like upsetting the room. My friends Australian. It’s her standard greeting! Ah ya cunt!

It’s definitely used affectionately in northern England

So it's just childish discourse and not misogyny then isn't it. Unless there's some double standards going on!

Much beneath you of course 😂

Fine, I’ll reclaim it in the South then! Maybe it’s just my town.

Balloonhearts · 08/02/2026 22:24

Just because they're a woman doesn't mean they're not a cunt.
