To ask which Olympics you prefer?

Posting here mostly for more traffic, as I'm interested to hear people's views.

For me personally, I much prefer the winter games. I know GB never does particularly well in them as we don't have a proper winter climate, but I just think the bravery and talent of winter Olympians is far more impressive than the majority of the summer games.

I can appreciate the skill of summer Olympians, but to my mind the running and jumping involved etc in that doesn't come close to what's involved in throwing yourself headfirst down an icy slope at 90mph on skis, or on one of those plastic tea tray things. 😂

It just seems there's naturally a lot more risk involved with the winter games (aside from something like curling, for instance) and therefore makes it easier for me to appreciate what they're doing and putting their bodies on the line for.

But AIBU? What do you think?
AIBU - I prefer the Summer Olympics
AINBU - I prefer the Winter Olympics

Winter Olympics all the way!

Colourscolours · 08/02/2026 15:06

Sorry to be a killjoy but you missed out the third option for people like me: no Olympics is the preferable option.

AgnesMcDoo · 08/02/2026 15:07

Winter - it’s much more exciting

Alpacajigsaw · 08/02/2026 15:07

I like both but I do prefer the summer games

Yep!

HollyGolightly4 · 08/02/2026 15:08

Prefer the winter! I just love the variety of sports and I like looking at the snow 🤣

newornotnew · 08/02/2026 15:09

Impossible to choose, I love them both

I always forget about the winter Olympics so definitely the summer ones .

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 08/02/2026 15:12

Summer, definitely.

Other than the curling and ice skating the winter Olympics leaves me cold. No pun intended!

Littletreefrog · 08/02/2026 15:13

I'm sitting firmly on the fence and like them both just as much. I love that both give significant TV time to the more niche sports and the para sports get a lot more coverage these days than they used to.

VeterinaryCareAssistant · 08/02/2026 15:16

I don't really care about the Olympics but I prefer the summer because I know some of the archery team and I like to watch the equestrian activities

Davros · 08/02/2026 15:20

I don’t really like running, jumping and throwing so not a fan of the summer Olympics. I do like all those things and more on snow or ice. Only to watch, I’ve never been near a winter sport personally

I gave up on the Olympics and a lot of sport because of issues with the amount of drugs, unfair funding and a host of other things. Not watching the Olympics is a decision. Not apathy.

And despite you wanting to police the thread I am allowed to voice an opinion.

Oh yes, the scenery of the winter Olympics is much more beautiful too, isn't it? I was watching it this morning and over lunch, and all the shots of the snowy mountains are just gorgeous. And at least it's in a proper winter location this time, rather than some of the stranger places they've held it in other years, like Sochi.

I love both. I only started watching the Winter Olympics in 2018. It's extra fascinating because none of it could be done in my part of the world. There's not even a suitable ice rink where I live.

TokyoSushi · 08/02/2026 15:29

Summer, but I really like them both!

Apart from the zoom in to the speed skating - that was not pretty 😆😆.

It's just gorgeous though in the main part.

Like a pp, I have equally never gone near a winter sport!

MissAnthr0pe · 08/02/2026 15:32

Summer for me - when it's on I can't get enough of it!

Runnersandtoms · 08/02/2026 15:37

I prefer the winter cos the sports are so mad but I enjoy the summer too, even though I don't know anything about any of the sports. Something about the Olympics makes me get quite emotional. Actually though my favourite might be the Paralympics (summer and winter) as I'm just so amazed what people can do despite adversity.

Ivegotafeelingwerenotinkansasanymore · 08/02/2026 15:46

Love both but th Winer Olympics edges it for me.

i love being able to watch world class ice hockey along with the skeleton, bobsleigh and luge, I've played ice hockey but never the others but I'd love to had been able to give them a try but sadly not in the North East!

Watching all of the athletes in their sport is incredible, the women's downhill today incredible so much speed and risk.

I do enjoy the Paralympics over the Olympics I love how sports can be adapted and people can still do them, when I had a life changing injury that was an inspiration to me, and whilst it isn't for everyone, it was life changing to find a sport, and then another that I could then go and do, very much summer Olympic sports tho!

Miranda65 · 08/02/2026 15:51

I can't choose, because I love them both. But we do get stuck in with more unfamiliar sports in the Winter Olympics, which is part of their appeal.
Having said that, attending the 2012 London Olympics was such a joy..... fantastic memories of the whole thing.

GasPanic · 08/02/2026 15:57

I'm not sure why people having the risk of horrible accidents makes it better.

But the summer olympics has it's fair share of danger.

Track and road cycling can be lethal - see the womens 2016 road race in rio.

Gymnastics looks like it could be horrible if things go wrong. Horse riding can also be quite dangerous if people fall off.

Hockey and Taekwondo you can get some horrible injuries.

I had to vote for summer but I can't take anything away from the winter athletes. There is nothing more hard-arse than the ski jump or luge.

Simonjt · 08/02/2026 16:00

Paralympics for me, the sports in the summer olympics are a bit more accessible for the average person.
