To ask which Olympics you prefer?

Posting here mostly for more traffic, as I'm interested to hear people's views.

For me personally, I much prefer the winter games. I know GB never does particularly well in them as we don't have a proper winter climate, but I just think the bravery and talent of winter Olympians is far more impressive than the majority of the summer games.

I can appreciate the skill of summer Olympians, but to my mind the running and jumping involved etc in that doesn't come close to what's involved in throwing yourself headfirst down an icy slope at 90mph on skis, or on one of those plastic tea tray things. 😂

It just seems there's naturally a lot more risk involved with the winter games (aside from something like curling, for instance) and therefore makes it easier for me to appreciate what they're doing and putting their bodies on the line for.

But AIBU? What do you think?
AIBU - I prefer the Summer Olympics
AINBU - I prefer the Winter Olympics

I quite like it when smaller countries dominate. So probably winter olympics edges it for me, plus a few minority summer sports.

JustGiveMeReason · 08/02/2026 16:14

Summer, because I enjoy watching athletics, but also because I feel it is open to all Countries, literally, from right across the globe.

Jamaican bob-sleigh team aside, there really isn't much opportunity for most Countries across the World to participate in the sports showcased at the Winter Olympics, whereas, in theory, anyone, from anywhere can find sports from the Summer Olympics to train to compete in.

Summer.

Well you could have scrolled past my post couldn't you?

Instead of being downright rude and offensive just because you didn't like what I said.

Chosing not to watch the Olympics is a valid stance and a valid comment on this thread. Whether you like it or not

mumofoneAloneandwell · 08/02/2026 17:09

Summer without a doubt

IdentifyingAsAWoollyMammoth · 08/02/2026 17:14

I find the Summer Olympics dull as ditch water and haven't watched it in decades. Whereas I never miss the Winter Olympics, most of the sports of which are far more visually exciting or tactically fascinating as well as skillful (looking at you, curling).

narrowrailroad · 08/02/2026 17:38

Winter is bizarre and can be entertaining but definitely more elitist and obscure, lots more sports that really aren't mass participation even in the areas with the right climate. I think it's getting deliberately more wacky to win more viewers, it must be very hard to get the funding to put on the event.

PinterandPirandello · 08/02/2026 17:42

I was just having this conversation with dh this morning. We both prefer the Winter Olympics. The skill and athleticism needed is another level and the scenery in the snow is beautiful too. Obviously the Uk can’t compete as well but they’re trying hard.

Ponderingwindow · 08/02/2026 17:44

The only thing worth watching in the summer is gymnastics. Winter has much more to offer.

Guidanceplease20 · 08/02/2026 17:50

I love all Olympics! Summer, Para and Winter.

World class sports covering so many different disciplines. And weeks of quality TV!

I'm not sure why people having the risk of horrible accidents makes it better.

But the summer olympics has it's fair share of danger.

Track and road cycling can be lethal - see the womens 2016 road race in rio.

Gymnastics looks like it could be horrible if things go wrong. Horse riding can also be quite dangerous if people fall off.

Hockey and Taekwondo you can get some horrible injuries.

I suppose for me, just like with an extreme/risky sport, it makes me think "blimey, I really couldn't do that" that bit more.

Not saying I could become a pole volter or long jumper or whatever overnight, but I feel with a lot of these winter sports there's a lot of mental preparation that goes into it as well as the physical side, knowing there's a chance it could go very badly wrong yet being comfortable enough with that to still perform at a very high level.

Summer due to my ability to unfailingly fall in snow or ice.

Winter strengths are curling, especially when the brushing is furious, and the one where you hurtle down a chute on your back on a tray.

TheChosenTwo · 08/02/2026 19:30

I barely register the summer Olympics as when it’s dry outside, I’m outside!
Ds and I have watched a bit of the Winter Olympics over the last couple of days, we don’t really understand any of the rules or scoring criteria of most of what we’ve seen but we’ve been excited anyway, I love the thrill of the luge and the snowboarding jump stuff, it’s great to watch.
It reminded us that we both caught covid for the first time 4 years ago (not very badly affected but at the time I worked in a school and wasn’t allowed in), we spent so many days in bed watching and got totally into the curling!
so for me it’s the Winter Olympics.

PersephonePomegranate · 08/02/2026 19:32

Too close to call for me! There are events in both that I particularly like and others I'm not so fussed about!
