Why are horses allowed to shit in the street when dogs can't?

Just seen a horse and rider going down our road, we are near to open fields. The horse stopped and left a massive dump in the middle of the road. Then the rider made him walk on.
Now this is a busy street we live on, with kids out on their bikes a lot and generally people coming and going.
Why are horse riders allowed to let their horses do this?
Im not stupid, I haven't a clue how the rider could clear it up. But it still seems totally wrong.

horses are vegetarian

Boxiboxi21 · 08/02/2026 12:37

I've wondered this about cats too. Cats shit in my garden beds which is dangerous as I'm pregnant. Dogs don't.

Mymanyellow · 08/02/2026 12:37

You’d need big poo bags and big tres to hang them on.

Needmorelego · 08/02/2026 12:37

Dogs generally poo on pavements where there are pedestrians (and their owners should be cleaning it up....I know many don't 🙁)
If kids are riding bikes on the road they should be at the cycling level to be able to avoid the horse plop.

Soonenough · 08/02/2026 12:37

It's straw and not toxic .

ShetlandishMum · 08/02/2026 12:38

Vegetarian poo and how often does it happen?

LeavesOnTrees · 08/02/2026 12:38

There are eloads of dogs where I live and no horses. Dog poo stinks.

MovedlikeHarlowinMonteCarlo · 08/02/2026 12:38

Because horse shit is fine as horses are vegetarian.

Swiftie1878 · 08/02/2026 12:38

Horse manure is completely natural/non- toxic. Dog poo isn’t and is dangerous.

Wakemeupinapril · 08/02/2026 12:38

Won't cause blindness in dc
..

Nodealordeal · 08/02/2026 12:38

Isn’t it to do with their diet? Horse shit is mainly grass and doesn’t contain the same risks to humans as dog shit. It’s still not ideal no and can be a nuisance to have horse shit everywhere. But it’s not dangerous like dog/other animal shit.

RealMember · 08/02/2026 12:39

Manure is not toxic and might not be possible to unmount and pick up without a shovel

Needmorelego · 08/02/2026 12:39

Go and collect it in a bucket and use on your garden (if you have one) or sell to someone else for their garden.

Dog shit can cause blindness amongst other issues however horse shit is non toxic- it is a nuisance at best.

wanderingstarz · 08/02/2026 12:41

Quite dangerous to leave piles of slippy horse shit on a road.

Excellent idea 😆

Dogs eat meat. If you have a garden, go out and get it!!

VeterinaryCareAssistant · 08/02/2026 12:42

As everyone else has already said, horses are herbivores and their poo is non toxic and an excellent fertiliser for growing veggies.

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 08/02/2026 12:43

Horse poo is in no way as offensive as dog poo and quite a few people round here would get a shovel and scoop it up to use on their gardens so that I wouldn’t be sitting in the road for long periods. No one is going to do that with dog poo!!

cats tend to bury there’s for those moaning about cats and as they tend to go out themselves there’s not a lot that can be done. My advice would be not to dig through your flower beds with bare hands.

EBearhug · 08/02/2026 12:43

I have been somewhere... can't remember, but anyway, they had lots of horse-drawn carriages for tourists, and they had a bit of canvas slung behind the rear legs.

I was always taught dog/cat/fox poo was more dangerous than horse/cow/sheep/deer/rabbit because they were carnivores vs herbivores - the latter great to rot down for the garden, the former you absolutely shouldn't. I assume it's to do with risks of zoonotic diseases, but I was never told details of why you shouldn't. Herbivore poo is generally less unpleasant smelling than carnivore poo though.

That's how young lads made money back in ye old days.
Walking behind all the horses collecting it.

I agree with you. It's not as bad as dog poo but still no one wants to step in it or drive through it. There's loads around our way and it's a residential area. I don't think it's on.

Whist I do get this and definitely don't find it as stinky as dog poo ... when its in the middle of the pavement or road its not doing much fertilising is it?

EBearhug · 08/02/2026 12:47

Who cares about driving through it? Obviously some of you didn't grow up on farms.

That's why you pounce with a bucket....
