Why are horses allowed to shit in the street when dogs can't?

Just seen a horse and rider going down our road, we are near to open fields. The horse stopped and left a massive dump in the middle of the road. Then the rider made him walk on.
Now this is a busy street we live on, with kids out on their bikes a lot and generally people coming and going.
Why are horse riders allowed to let their horses do this?
Im not stupid, I haven't a clue how the rider could clear it up. But it still seems totally wrong.

Yes of course! They have all that land, those farm animals shouldn’t be on roads, poor things 😔

Is this serious? What about when the animals need to get from one grazing area to another?

In the farm truck.

You can't put fresh horse manure on your garden either not unless you want to burn your plants.

Did you read your post through before you sent it? Are you writing Alice in Wonderland part 2?

do you seriously expect a rider to dismount from a 17hh - that means very tall - horse in the middle of a road to deal with horse poo by picking it up??!!

Ithinkofawittyusernamethenforgetit · 08/02/2026 13:38

That’s an awful price to pay - why are they using the roads if they have fields and stables?

Is that a serious post?

fluffiphlox · 08/02/2026 13:49

Because of what they eat.

'Dog poo contains about much more toxins (more than human) and is not natural to the land.'

Soil is natural to the land. Would you deposit a few shovels full of soil on a public road?

If for whatever reason a rider can't clean up at the time they should pop back later with a shovel and do it then.

er if you lived in the country (I can see you don't) you will quickly see that soil etc does go onto the road from time to time but this is irrelevant.

Dog poo is highly toxic and classed as an environmental biohazard containing 300 times more harmful bacteria than human waste, including E. coli, Salmonella, and Campylobacter. It poses severe risks, particularly to children, through the transmission of (roundworm) eggs, which can cause blindness, seizures, and illness. These pathogens can persist in soil for years - which is where the problem lies.

From a farming perspective cows and sheet live in fields to eat grass, which is how they get ill from dog poo (indirectly).

Horse poo is natural and non toxic to people and livestock - hence no need to pick up.

I’d not expect a horse to be on a road. Plenty of green land for it to be on. In parades - such as The Lady Mayor’s Parade - it’s very efficiently cleared up straight away by street sweepers following the parade.

Rain is a bit different to a pile of steaming shit. And lets face it. Shit is shit.

Rain washes cow horse and sheep shit off the fields and onto the roads. If you walk on country roads you are likely walking in shit.

Cow shit can contain cryptosporidium so therefore is washed into muddy country puddles by the rain.

You’d not expect horses to be on a road? Eh? Have you literally never driven outside of central London or something?

In the farm truck.

Thats right. No horses should ever journey anywhere outside their paddock unless in “a farm truck”. 😹

OnarealhorseIride · 08/02/2026 13:58

Horse poop is not the same as carnivore poop but that said, if my horse poops in the lane then I do get off and scrape it onto the verge

Genuinely don’t know why a horse needs to go anywhere on a road - the vet and the blacksmith surely travel to them?

Hahaha - getting some manure on one’s tires when driving in the country is “An awful price to pay” for living in a peaceful place with vastly reduced CO2 levels / noise / stress.

Yeah, given the awful price to pay I’d deffo rather live in a city rather than get some fresh fertilizer on my car.

Live semi rurally. Loads of farms round and about. Horses and their riders are a nuisance on public roads and that is without the huge steaming piles of crap they leave in their wake. I don't care that it isn't toxic it is highly unpleasant.

Be responsible! Go back later and shovel or at least kick into the gutter. Be considerate to other road users.

Don't be ridiculous.

If you live "semi-rurally" horses and tractors etc come with the territory. If you can't cope with that go and live in a nice clean town.
