Why are horses allowed to shit in the street when dogs can't?

Just seen a horse and rider going down our road, we are near to open fields. The horse stopped and left a massive dump in the middle of the road. Then the rider made him walk on.
Now this is a busy street we live on, with kids out on their bikes a lot and generally people coming and going.
Why are horse riders allowed to let their horses do this?
Im not stupid, I haven't a clue how the rider could clear it up. But it still seems totally wrong.

Some posters on this thread think and write like freshly-hatched aliens. 🤣

Or maybe we're sick of navigating round huge piles of steaming crap?

In the farm truck.

Seriously, you are winding up aren't you?

Also known as small amounts of recycled hay.

Petrine · 08/02/2026 14:05

Horse droppings are comprised mainly of fibrous matter. Horses obviously aren't carnivores and that makes all the difference in which they excrete. I don't see it as an issue.

It's steaming crap. Loads of it. Usually on footpaths where people and their kids walk. Get off and move it (a considerate rider has just said they manage that) or go back later and shovel, sweep, move, whatever you do in the yard as I'm pretty sure you don't just leave massive piles of crap everywhere. Or do you?

How on earth do you cope when something actually bad happens?

I SO agree. We live on a housing "estate". Fuck off with your horses

I expect the horses (and other farm animals as well as wildlife) would love to say fuck off with your crappy house and let them keep their fields. Humans are the problem here.

Its the volume . A tiny pebble poo of 'hay' lovely, however there's usually a pavement or footpath full of it in a horse's wake.

In the farm truck.

I take it you have never had to wait on a country road while a farmer moves his herd of cows from farm yard to field or vice versa. If you had you would realise how hilariously impractical it would be for him/ her to have to move all those cows a few at a time in a truck!

How do you function in life?

Absolutely fine thanks, but it’s a genuine question which you didn’t answer! Please, enlighten me. For example, I have used my car at various times for getting to work, shopping, visiting friends, going on holiday, helping people move… oh and doctor, dentist and shoe shop which are the only three of those I can imagine horses need 😂.

Genuinely don’t know why a horse needs to go anywhere on a road - the vet and the blacksmith surely travel to them?

Don't know why anyone needs to use the roads.
Groceries delivered, doctors can visit (oh, how will the Dr get to you?), no children or other cyclists need to use roads.
Buses, taxis ? Nope, let's all stay at home and let the world come to us. Not on the road though.
Perhaps turn it on it's head and say why shouldn't horses and riders be able to use the roads?

FoxLoxInSox · 08/02/2026 13:55

You’d not expect horses to be on a road? Eh? Have you literally never driven outside of central London or something?

I've been in central London when a military horse lost it and it's rider. I don't think unpredictable large animals are safe on the road. I don't think it's fair to the animal either.

Very well thanks. This is about horseriders and when their animals foul public rights of way doing naff all about it.

Be considerate. I pop my dogs lead on when I see a horse as I'm a considerate and responsible owner. Clean your animals crap up and be a responsible rider.

That's an enormous exaggeration. A horse simply doesn't excrete that amount. Just step over it.

Well, as you actually appear to be serious.

Horses also require exercise, training, socialising and often rehabilitation if they're injured, all of which involve them being ridden (either by a rider or in hand) so that they can exercise, build muscle and maintain their fitness and stamina. Not all of that can be done on a muddy field. HTH.

What makes you think I ride horses? I don’t. I don’t even like horses (I’m scared of them).

But I’m on the side of sanity and reason, and think this hyperbole around some natural recycled hay is hilarious and OTT and probably held by those who use disinfectant in their laundry and scent boosters, and iron their valances. Just unclench and get muddy from time to time!

You’ve contradicted yourself by the second sentence 😂

5foot5 · 08/02/2026 14:18

If a passing horse did a dump on my road I would be out there like a shot with my shovel. I have just spent the morning pruning the roses and giving them a feed with some rose feed stuff that comes in a box from B and Q and costs about a tenner. A heap of the real stuff would be lovely thank you.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 08/02/2026 14:18

People used to like to scoop up horse poo - which incidentally doesn’t smell nearly as vile as dog poo - to put on their roses.

Maybe they still do.

And it would probably kill your roses unless you had somewhere to store it for a few months.

I have a quiet corner!

My Dad was a keen vegetable gardener and he used to arrange with a local farmer to get a big heap of manure every year. He would keep it rotting in the garden for a bit before digging it in. My Mum loved that! Not.

stichguru · 08/02/2026 14:25

Simple Go for a walk with your kids. One of you steps in poo and doesn't realise. Goes back in the house and doesn't wipe their shoe properly. Crawler/Toddler goes in, gets poo on their hands, sucks hands, wipes it in their eyes.

Horse poo - toddler is a mess and a bit smelly. Maybe has a doggy tummy for a day or two if they've managed to really eat a load. Eyes are sore, needs a very good rise with water, maybe some Calpol to ease their stomach ache or stinging eyes.

Dog Poo - Toddler is very unwell, stomach ache, vomiting, fever, inability to drink, probably won't recover without medication, may need a drip for dehydration. Needs special medicine for their eyes, their vision is affected, they may experience temporary or forever, partial or total, vision loss.

So yes - your question is a kin to why bother lock up cleaning products if there are other non-edible things in your toddler's reach!

Same here, our local riding school is often followed up the road by people wanting the manure Grin

As kids we used to get sent to the stables with a wheelbarrow to vollect manure for the garden. Findibg it higly amusing that people even worry about this

Shovel? The way some people are going on you'd think you'd need one of those open cast mine trucks to shift it, and anyway it's apparently on a par with novichok for hazardousness so be sure to don your hazmat suit.
