To think without a key part of breakfast the price should be discounted

Just come to a local carvery chain to have breakfast. Its an unlimited breakfast -£11.48.

But they've got no bacon! Tbf they do tell you when you arrive, something to do with their supply chain. But bacon is a big part of breakfast! It's £11.45, that includes sausage, hash browns, mushrooms, tomatoes, fried eggs and cubes potatoes. Unlimited tea/coffee and toast. It's not put me off but would it put you off? Would you expect a discount?

Christ with that much on it’s a wonder you can taste anything else! (Although that does make more sense)

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 08/02/2026 11:05

No because there was plenty of other food and it was all you can eat. Plus they told you at the door.

Everyone’s idea of what is “key” is different, and you could have gone elsewhere if you chose.

Most of the price you pay will be for the cooking of it and their overheads anyway, rather than the ingredients.

Thedevilhasfinallycaughtupwithhim · 08/02/2026 11:07

No I wouldn’t.
You're not getting less food. You’re just getting less variety.

Frugalgal · 08/02/2026 11:09

If it's all you can eat she may have piled up her plate herself, rather than having it served to her. Hence the rather unpalateable melange..

79Beastie · 08/02/2026 09:57

I wouldn't pay for that anyway. It looks horrible. What's all the brown juice? Looks very unappetising. I wouldn't eat it even with bacon

Brown/HP sauce, ketchup and tomato juice, by the looks of it. All perfectly normal choices for a cooked breakfast for somebody who likes them.

Egglio · 08/02/2026 11:12

Stangirsdottir · 08/02/2026 10:58

Apparently the brown gravy is likely brown sauce or HP sauce.

The white gloop on the egg yolk is undercooked egg white; and the plates are presumably quite small to discourage people overloading and then wasting food.

Brown sauce! Must be very watered down.

Bjorkdidit · 08/02/2026 11:15

The 'brown juice' is clearly gravy and doesn't belong on breakfast. It looks nothing like HP sauce.

I wouldn't expect a discount, because you just choose something else.

The eggs look perfectly cooked to me, I don't like solid yolks. Although the hash browns are undercooked, I'd be annoyed about that. £11.48 for unlimited breakfast of your choosing and tea/coffee is probably below average price.

ilovepixie · 08/02/2026 11:18

Are people simple! It’s obviously HP brown sauce! Not gravy 😂😂

Anywherebuthere · 08/02/2026 11:20

No. You knew before ordering and paying.

Lottle · 08/02/2026 11:22

Telling you upfront isn't that useful when you've already driven there and are kind of committed. I think a discount would be fair.

HolidayPlanningAgain · 08/02/2026 10:05

I don’t like bacon on a breakfast when I’m out as they don’t cook it to my liking.
that breakfast looks pretty awful and would be annoyed at that price for what looks like poor quality food

How can you tell the quality of the food from that picture? The food is piled up in a heap so it's impossible to see what some of it looks like. And I'm not sure what the give aways are that those are low quality eggs and a substandard mushroom?

You can tell because the hash browns don't even look cooked - neither do the eggs. The tomatoes also look like cheap rubbish from a tin.

8misskitty8 · 08/02/2026 11:30

You've paid the £11 for an afternoon/night on the pan !
That food looks grim. Jelly like bits on the egg, white hash browns and what on earth is that pink stuff ?

They told you upfront there was no bacon, that was the time to enquire about money off. But i would have asked for a full refund after seeing what they were actually offering.

Rosecoffeecup · 08/02/2026 11:35

Goodness that looks dreadful. Were the hash browns done on the radiator?

Dontcallmescarface · 08/02/2026 11:36

I hate bacon so would happily pay full price not to have it ruining an otherwise perfect breakfast.

Alpacajigsaw · 08/02/2026 11:38

Can’t imagine bacon would redeem that. It looks vile.

BillieWiper · 08/02/2026 11:39

Well I wouldn't eat the thing on the picture.
And I wouldn't expect a discount at an all you can eat carvery, no.
I like bacon so I would just go to a normal caff.

Nor would I tbh! And why serve hash browns AND cubed potatoes? Oh, hang on a minute….the potatoes were left overs and had been lurking on the fridge, no date label on and no one knew how old they were.

Judellie · 08/02/2026 11:47

No. I detest bacon and would never choose it anyway.

BloomsburyBelgravia · 08/02/2026 11:49

If they told you when you arrived there was no bacon, that was your choice to decide whether to go ahead with it.

taxguru · 08/02/2026 11:52

YABU. You had the choice to go elsewhere and most people would simply put an extra sausage or whatever on the plate if they couldn't have the bacon and wanted more to eat.

That said, it IS very bad form of the restaurant not to have such a basic staple item, so a negative review on Trip Advisor is well deserved.

Remember it's not just the food itself you're paying for, it's the building, staffing, overheads, heating/lighting, crockery/cutlery, washing up, etc etc.,

But very poor management that they ran out of such an item - obviously poor order/stock control caused it. It should also have been within the ability of the restaurant manager to have realised soon enough to source replacement supplies, even if it meant someone nipping out to the nearest supermarket! (Yes I know they have rules and procedures, but common sense also needs to prevail and enough negative reviews may make them put alternative procedures in place when things go wrong!).

Not unusual to leave out bacon.
Processed meats are unhealthy. Some breakfasts places are trying to sway more towards healthy foods like beans, oats, eggs, fruits, nuts and mushrooms.

ginasevern · 08/02/2026 11:59

If it was my hospitality venue, then I'd offer a small discount for goodwill. If people are going out for a fry up, they do expect bacon. But I imagine this is a chain establishment, in which case the management are generally unable to be flexible with pricing or anything else really.

I don't think anyone going to Toby Carvery or similar for breakfast is looking to have oat and fruit.

Nothing wrong with occasional processed meat consumption as long as it's not a major part of your overall diet. Maybe the OP never has sausage and bacon at home so decided to go out to have it for breakfast.

Reallyneedsaholiday · 08/02/2026 12:05

I wouldn’t expect a discount, but I WOULD expect a replacement of some sort - extra egg/ sausage etc. having said that, you couldn’t finish it all anyway, so even that would have been a waste.
