Most things in life can be traced back to childhood. I think you and Mary are right though, he's in his dotage now and couldn't give a shit how he comes across, he certainly didn't express the bigotry in his 30s that he does now. I think he's a bit of a perv as well. Have a look at an old interview of him on the Graham Norton show. Cameron Diaz was genuine and innocent in her admiration of him but instead of having a nice moment with her, he turned into a sleazy, grubby old man moment. She handled it well but I think she must have been a bit disappointed, given that she must have experienced a lot of that already in Hollywood.

A lot of people in real life are incredibly complacent about child abuse and most don't see it as their responsibility to do anything - massive bystander effect. You'd be really suprised what supposedly trustworthy adults can know about whilst looking the other way because it doesn't suit them to rock the boat
