We live in leeds and she is getting married in Edinburgh in December. She has just told us in our friends group chat that our partners aren’t invited, and will just be ourselves.

We can all travel over there together and stay over somewhere so it’s not as if I’ll be going on my own. But I have never heard of this before. I have recently got engaged myself and it never occurred to me to invite people but not their partners?? Is this a common thing?

It's always been the case that venue and budget influence the guest list.
Even my parents, back in their day, did not extend an invitation to the partners of their work mates. And no partners of more distant relatives were invited unless they were engaged.
The "No ring, no bring" rule was common.

Maybe the cant afford to pay for partners and spaces may be limited.

No, only one person in the couple had met him briefly (when he dropped me off at the hen do).

Do you really believe that your partner should have been invited over someone they know and is in their life? It’s so odd that you wouldn’t go in these circumstances.

I think it’s quite common if you don’t socialise as a couple! My partner as had a few weddings for colleagues where only he has been invited - he gets on well with them out of work, goes for drinks, golf etc but we’ve never double dated.
