Keir starmer is dead in the water

1000 replies

Bertiebiscuit · 04/02/2026 22:21

The UK cannot have a prime minister who gave a plum job to a man when all the time he knew that Mandelson was still close friends with an ex-con who was convicted for trafficking children for sexual abuse. Starmer is destroying the reputation of the UK, he is an embarrassment and shoukd resign, if not the Labour party should demand his resignation.

It wasn't obvious to me, either. Clarity matters if you want to make yourself understood. Don't bland us for your typos!

I actually thought the poster was trying to say that calling them rent boys makes them into one homogeneous group when they are not.

But in fact the term she wants us to use makes them part of one homogeneous group ranging from stranger rape victims to the apparently willing grooming victim who doesn't even realise they been abused until someone else points it out.

Back to Starmer, shall we take bets on how many weeks, or should that be days, he's going to last?

peanutbuttertoasty · 06/02/2026 09:14

He’s been told to hold on until his handlers have decided who to place next to do their bidding.

Tricky one how long does HMRC take to look at tax affairs ;

Interesting where did you see that @peanutbuttertoasty?

explanationplease · 06/02/2026 09:20

@ImdunferI propose you have some respect, including to young and often exploited teenagers.

Anyway the thread is about Starmer.

If you tax wealthy too much they will just move to another country where the taxes are lower. Dont you get that ?

Food security is important. We cant keep importing all our food from far off countries.

VAT shouldnt be paid on education either. Education is not a luxury item.

Well, I suppose that depends on their values and how much they support the public services provided via their taxation. Anthony Joshua and Harry Styles are two of the biggest contributors of UK taxation. Both still resident and happy to pay their taxes. The epitome of 'patriots' if you like.

Private schools are businesses. Not charities. Plenty of businesses associated with education pay VAT.

Gobacktotheworld2 · 06/02/2026 09:32

It would be quite something if he called a snap election rather than resign, wouldn't it? And all the MPs both Labour and Tory Conservative currently baying for his blood suddenly had to go back and get the backing of their constituents for five more years of - whatever this has been.

We can dream. Alas won’t happen

I have said nothing which disrespects the victims of sexual abuse.

I suggest you do something that genuinely helps those victims instead of policing other people's use of words that accurately convey a meaning that other people readily understand and attempting to shame and bully people into using terms which are far from clear and lump very different situations into one classification, helping no-one.

How does that help the UK if the total tax take is reduced by causing people who are not as patriotic as the pair you name to move out of the country?

So is private health care and care homes, are you proposing to tax people out of using that and cause them to put even more pressure on the NHS and councils as well as the education system?

Careful what you wish for otherwise Raynor or more likely Milliband could be our next PM 😳😳😳😳

I checked the betting odds earlier, they mostly had Rayner as favourite and Streeting 2nd, then Milliband.

AInightingale · 06/02/2026 10:19

Milliband is the favourite among the membership.

Can't wait until the press goes to town on Streeting's 'interesting' forebears.

They’ve got to move on from men as leaders. Especially post Epstein links.

moto748e · 06/02/2026 10:27

The Labour Party is an oil-tanker, it ain't making any sudden changes of direction. I'm not the biggest fan of Angela Rayner, but if she were Leader, I don't think the sky would fall in, and by any reasonable measure, she is not especially 'left-wing', FWIW, at all. She would get the same hounding from the press that Ed Milliband got, I imagine.

There’s more than enough to talk about with Starmer and the government.

Rudeness to, or attacks on posters isn’t necessary.

Anyway, it looks like Labour succession planning now. My money’s on Jeremy Corbyn. There was less chaos under his emphatic rule.

You'd lose your money I'm afraid, as he's not eligible, having been expelled from Labour a couple of years ago.

John McDonnell, however, is eligible, has similar politics to Corbyn, and is very able imo.

Also, if/when KS leaves and a leadership challenge begins, I think the following MPs will all throw their hats in the ring to be leader: Wes Streeting, Bridget Phillipson, Jess Phillips, David Lammy, Shabana Mahmood and Yvette Cooper. I think WS will win and SM will come second.

Wes Streeting is daffy ducked - his partner worked for Mandy and until very recently there were pics of him and Epstein on his SM.

The only one of your list who has an unblotted copy book (afaik) is Shabana Mahmood and I suspect she will be unpalatable as leader, for obvious (if depressing) reasons.

Have you got a source for that please, @Aln ?

It's very different from what I'm hearing from friends who are generally well-informed on these matters, but their sources are very much London-based. The regions often vote quite differently.

@JennyWren5why no Angela Rayner in this list? She is a front runner to do it.

There was a poll of Labour members by a consultancy group called Blondemoney late last year where he was voted favourite to take over.

Awful spiteful policy that has ended up costing money and leading to the closure of schools.Bridget Phillipson obviously thought we had far too many school places in the country that didnt cost the taxpayer anything and we needed a bit of a cull.

Private schools were already closing, way before VAT was even thought about. They'd hiked up their prices massively too, before VAT. Suddenly VAT was the only issue?!

An otherwise viable school should not be closed due to government policy against education.

Nobbystyles · 06/02/2026 10:58

To use, the known unknowns phrase, what fate do we believe will befall Starmer’s successor?

I shall go first.

Rayner Something else funky in her personal finances, which she hopes will
stay buried although which is probably already known to the DT, who
are just waiting to release it into the wild.

Burnham A bond market sell-off

Streeting A vindictive LW/backbenches, not allowing him to lead.

Miliband Sheer incompetence.
