Keir starmer is dead in the water

Bertiebiscuit · 04/02/2026 22:21

The UK cannot have a prime minister who gave a plum job to a man when all the time he knew that Mandelson was still close friends with an ex-con who was convicted for trafficking children for sexual abuse. Starmer is destroying the reputation of the UK, he is an embarrassment and shoukd resign, if not the Labour party should demand his resignation.

I don't have a dog in this race and don't care if Starmer stays or goes, but what I know is true is that he's not the only one. If you think you can find someone clean and uncompromised to replace him, you're very naive. They are all as bad as each other. Some of them manage to hide it better.

Well, we all know Rayner’s background, don’t we?

So, if she replaces Starmer, nobody can plead ignorance, when shit goes south.

JennyWren5 · 04/02/2026 23:22

He’s no worse than previous PMs we’ve had.

Saying it five times in a row doesn’t make it more true 😂

ruffler45 · 05/02/2026 05:42

I wonder if he went what have labour got to replace him with? where have all the old style politicians gone?

So what about Boris Johnson? He lied to the Queen to peroge parliament, partygate, and those are just for starters!

Meadowfinch · 04/02/2026 23:08

Starmer knew Mandelson was an inveterate liar, the whole establishment knew. He knew M lived in a fantasy land, playing far above his pay grade. The security services will have made that clear. They will also have listed the number of his overseas jaunts, again way beyond his means. M was a massive and obvious risk. He was also unqualified for such a key appointment, not a professional diplomat.

This is why, as significant as it is for UK politics, I’m with the 56% of the YouGov poll cited above who couldn’t give a shit about this story.

’Another politician turns out to be dodgy AF’

Really? No way! What a shocker.

I can’t even.

He’s no longer PM, Starmer is.

Not sure you can say the UK made any difference to Trumps foreign policy anywhere. It's clear he only cares about the USA and it's interests so I wouldnt link UK to any of that.

As far as Palestine action goes if you attack an RAF base what do you expect? Yes we need more free speech rather than being banned from speaking truth about Muslim grooming gangs and and being prevented from having the statistics on crimes committed by immigrants.

Though all very off topic following your entry into this rabbit hole!

I chose PA as an example, they are not whiter than white and their behaviour is debatable. But now they are proscribed discussion could be considered support, which could lead to charges under terrorism legislation - chilling indeed!
Grooming gangs are also something which should be discussed openly and actually KS is implicated in how the state has handled that so a very relevant topic too.

IggysPop · 05/02/2026 06:12

I hope not.

JD Vance was hopeful that the release would bring down the left. Theil talks to Epstein about needing more global chaos. Bannon talking about supporting far right movements across Europe. These are the people that really concern me - and how we protect our democracies against this global web of relationships based on money.

Parentingconfusing · 05/02/2026 03:34

Yeah we have a lot of shit going on. But we don’t blame it on other people. Ever.

Has it ever, and I mean ever AT ALL crossed your mind that you hate the Greeks? Such awful people they are being descended from the Romans. I can answer that for you - it’s a no because that’s just not in our psyche or zeitgeist or narrative.

Do you even wake at night thinking the Russians are such awful an people? Considering they have bombed and maimed many Ukrainians? No, because that’s Putin not Russians.

Do you detest Jews? (to use PPs highly emotive language) Because of Gaza? Obviously not because that’s Netanyahu and not Isreali peoples fault, it’s not even Israel’s fault. It’s just one psycho man yet again.

I concede that on second reading that initial post by gobacktotheworld2 is a bit ranty and whataboutery'y. But sadly the point that Britain has pissed away its right to lecture is valid.
To use one of your examples what do you think Xi JinPing would say to Netanyahu/Israel if he lectured him on the rights of Uighyrs?
So when the UK criticize another state's freedom of speech or military interventions, they might just roll their eyes

According to Guido Falkes, they're having crisis talks with him tonight. It's being reported on the front page of ALL the papers, including The Guardian, that he's in trouble. Angela Rayner is circling the wagon. Looks like he's a gonna!

The Left Wing are amassing the troops ready for a coup.
Interesting times ahead !

SeriousFaffing · 04/02/2026 22:55

The sooner the crowd stops baying for a rotating cast of prime ministers, we’ll be in a better position as a country. This is not normality.

Exactly! Ridiculous.

TheActualQueen · 05/02/2026 06:17

Tell that to the Labour back-benchers who have thwarted the government at every turn.

Saltycaramelkiss · 04/02/2026 22:39

Wes Streeting said they don't discriminate against anyone based on mere association. I think this is sensible. Sadly this time they got it wrong but not a reason to resign imo

They should in a case like Mandelson where he knew exactly who and what Epstein was, it was common knowledge. Lots of excuses were made for Jimmy Saville at the time, people blamed it on the era and it just being a different time. With Epstein and Mandelson we’re talking about the late 00s, he has no excuse whatsoever. He also, let’s not forget, threatened Alistair Darling during the 2008 financial crash to reinstate bankers bonuses, on Epstein’s say so.

TheActualQueen · 05/02/2026 06:17

Exactly! Ridiculous.

Even better will be when we have a PM who does not place friends of a convicted paedophile in government.

That would be a good start.

Bikergran · 05/02/2026 06:34

My thought was, in what universe does being vetted for a highly internationally important diplomatic position consist of simply asking him if he's done anything he shouldn't? Surely he should have been thoroughly investigated by MI5 or similar, if journalists can nose out the truth, it shouldn't be beyond the capability of the intelligence service. Unless the thinking from No 10 was that as a slimeball with a suspicious history himself, he'd be the best person to understand/deal with the present POTUS.

HRTQueen · 05/02/2026 06:38

The problem isn’t just just about PM’s appointment and what was known at the time it’s how it’s been handled, again badly. Labour are a pr disaster at the moment

I hope this doesn’t bring Starmer down but no surprise Rayner is sharpening her knife

I work in finance and have been vetted by Kroll.
The scope and depth of those background checks were extremely thorough.

I cannot believe that Mandelson went through anything less comprehensive.

It does not make sense.

Proof that foreign (non US) leaders think this please?

I don’t mix with non US or US leaders so I can’t speak for them, or provide ‘proof’, but then I didn’t say that that’s what world leaders think. However I do spend 8 or 9 months outside the UK in various countries (and live in Italy) and have done for a while, and the consensus among the people I mix with is that Starmer is a weak puppet who almost always backs the wrong thing or backs down - and is at the mercy of the unions and his MPs. He’s seen as a moderately competent lawyer who can argue a brief but not write the brief. A technocrat that’s been over promoted. FWIW I’d categorise the bulk of people I socialise with as being liberal/social democratic in outlook - people who’s you’d think would have sympathy for him. Perhaps you can provide evidence that he is in fact seen as a shrewd political operator and that the world is wrong…

Whataboutery? Do you know what that means?

I'm not deflecting blame from my own country onto yours.

I'm directly deriding the original post which referred to the UK's reputation, and giving a handful out of dozens of reasons why your halo isn't quite so shiny and untarnished as, en masse, you pretend it is.

Your reputation, by the way, is in the fucking sea.😃

Ah no he didn't, the Police never present enough evidence, plenty of chances to prosecute Saville but not without evidence, the CPS don't gather this... but you know this already mmmmm

If only i could recall who made Saville the Disabilities guy..... that famous female Tory Prime Minister's name escapes me....

The beauty of either, is that they will simply accelerate the demise of this government.

Burnham would meanwhile cause a full blown crisis in the bond market.

ParmaViolletts · 05/02/2026 07:09

@DoIdriveaVauxhallZafira I most definitely can because to him it's all women's issues.

And they are just not on his radar.
