Is this benefitting her or women in general? I’m really unimpressed

nb: this post is about Emily atack and her latest extremely sexual photos in the press

Why why why!!!!! She’s already successful, lots of money, seemingly intelligent and has a child and partner. Why why why do women keep wanting to come across as sex dolls? I really don’t understand especially as she has spoken about her experience of sexual assault before. Do so many women feel like the most important thing to them in life is still being classed as a ‘wanted, needed by men, sexual being’ above everything else? This can’t be for money purposes.

Well she greatly appeals to them then, and no doubt makes plenty of money from them..I personally prefer Britney as school girl than someone literally in her underwear.. why the need for thar

How would you advertise underwear if someone has clothes on?

Wingingit73 · 03/02/2026 17:46

Sell doll?

I can’t quite get my head around how sexualising a teenager in school uniform is preferable to an adult woman in underwear. That’s fucked up.

Yeah I do get that that seems to odd. I guess I didn't think Britney was OTT in that....and older teenagers (think she was 17/18 at the time) can be sexy, and feel sexy, I know I did. And uniforms are worn in public while underwear is not...
That's my thinking out loud reasoning, which may or may not make sense. An older adult or a much younger girl dressed up sexily in a uniform would make me feel differently and much more 'yuck! I guess I remember hiking my skirt up myself at 17 and I see teen girls with much shorter skirts than Britney had on in that video.

She's not advertising underwear tho. She's a singer.

Most people over 30 don't give a toss about the charts or watch the Brits. I've never heard of her either.

You are missing out, she is fantastic. Also, I am over thirty and still listen to contemporary pop music, I know, scandalous isn't it? The way I see it, if people are still making good music I don't see why I shouldn't listen to it, even if I am a decrepid old crone! I didn't realise there was a law stating that you had to stop listening to any music by new artists the minute you turn thirty, what a depressing world that would be!
Finally, you do realise the Grammy Awards aren't the same thing as the Brits don't you? The former may be more significant globally than the latter!

BriefEncountersOfTheThirdKind · 03/02/2026 17:44

Right?

"I'd rather someone look sexy as a child in child adjacent clothing than an adult in adult clothing"

No, more I'd rather women wear outdoor clothes outdoors rather than underwear outdoors. Britney (at 18 I think) in her uniform - I don't think seeing women as normally wearing underwear while performing would be better.
ETA: I think it's a bit unfair to say I said I'd rather someone look sexy as a child.. that's a deliberate misrepresentation of what I said.

Britney was 16 years old.

mikado1 · 03/02/2026 17:56

If Britney had gone to perform at her concerts in a uniform while being more overtly sexy then that would be v off.
I'm going to stop now because I'm trying to figure it out for myself lol. She was a year or two behind me in age and we loved doing the same dance at the time so I'm a former Britney fan and wasn't looking at it through a parent or older adult's eyes at the time.

Sabrina Carpenter performing at a show or in a music video or going to an awards show is not a woman "outdoors"

That's a woman at work

It's not a misrepresentation of what you said. It's what you said.

She was 16.
I was 17 at the time and didn’t see it as an issue however, as 43 year old I feel that sexualising school girls is incredibly problematic. Far more problematic than an adult woman wearing underwear.

typical Mail idococy, it's up there with "stuns" and "flaunts" and "shows her ex what he's missing". "sets pulses racing" . Men on the other hand just seem to go out wearing clothes

Also 'showcasing'
as in 'katie price showcases her sensational figure, flaunting her stunning midriff and showing her ex what he's missing'

Definitely agree it feels different as an older woman.

She was 16 and being deliberately portrayed as a sexy schoolgirl. She was also being, well documented, abused

So you really might want to rethink what you're saying

Parsleyforme · 03/02/2026 18:09

But a sexy photo isn’t an invitation to sexually assault that person. Neither is any type of clothing or lingerie. I assume is wanting to reclaim her sexiness, feel confident and not let her experiences define her or turn her into a nun. If she was younger I might have something to say about the photos but at 36 she can make adult decisions. It’s a lingerie brand not porn. What happened to female empowerment and free the nip?

Definitely see it differently knowing and the age and tbh reflecting on what I thought them Vs now. I've just googled pics and even my memory of it was v different and much more innocent ie school kids dancing in the school..

So now I can see the issue with that and still don't see the need for Sabrina in lingerie at work. Her choice of course but not doing women any favours imo.

SixtySomething · 03/02/2026 18:19

CoffeeMumForever · 03/02/2026 14:39

Absolutely not the case. I just wouldn’t want my own daughter growing up seeing women like her in the spotlight clearly selling herself via sex and normalising this behaviour. Surely there’s more to life? Come on women, move past the obsession of sex, regardless of it it’s for yourself, other women or men.

Well said , Op.
You're not being misogynistic at all.

Because that's the style she's chosen

The "pin up girl"

She's sexy, sexual and successful in her own right

Nothing wrong with that

Telling women they shouldn't dress certain ways and shouldn't be sexual because it might tempt the menfolk definitely is misogynistic

Well she greatly appeals to them then, and no doubt makes plenty of money from them..I personally prefer Britney as school girl than someone literally in her underwear.. why the need for thar? I do sometimes think how silly a man would look doing tbe same. Ed Sheeran and his guitar in his y fronts.. and that does make how normal and acceptable it is and wven expected, that female artists are expected to be so different.
And while she might be older, she looks almost like a teen herself so it's understandable that she attracts tweens as well as fans.
I suppose I do feel it's a shame that girls and women are so sexualised in so many ways and it's what young girls and boys are seeing and I don't think it's great that that's the image they have of what a girl or woman is- deliberately provocative poses in tight clothes as the norm eg boohoo ad on a local bus shelter here. Yes men do those photos hoots sometimes but it's nothing as frequent or in your face. I remember the impact it had on me and the expectation I felt of being thin, hot, booby (I was the opposite) while the boys just wore their jeans and hoodies and sat in judgement of us, or so it felt, also influenced by the same media around us growing up.
ETA sorry thought I'd quoted a pp on Sabrina Carpenter but see now I didn't.

Edited

She can’t help who finds her appealing though? She doesn’t market herself to the audience.
I have an acquaintance who took her 11 and 9 year olds to a Sabrina carpenter concert then complained that it was overtly sexual in nature. Sorry, but that was entirely on her as their parent.

Sabrina Carpenter is an adult choosing to portray herself as a pinup girl while performing her show.

why is that ‘not doing women any favours’ . What favours is she supposed to be doing for women?

I have said I wouldn't post anymore so I won't again, and I've probably derailed OP's quite different thread.
I did post already what I meant by this - which is that I remember feeling the need to be hot, thin etc because of seeing people like Sabrina etc growing up and like or not it does impact young girls and their own self image etc. I feel that so much of how girls and women are portrayed now in the media is in tight clothes with perfect bodies etc.

I'm bowing out now tho. I have no problem with an underwear ad. I do have a problem with having had a lifetime of feeling that women are how they look or obliged to always present attractive/sexily etc.

It hasn’t derailed the thread. It’s all part of how women are criticised, judged and blamed for making decisions other women don’t like.

kittensinthekitchen · 03/02/2026 18:56

Haven't read the whole thread as I hated the insinuation that women must only act in a way beneficial to other women....

... but I LOVE the thought that Chappell Roan dresses the way she does for the male gaze 😂😂

Some Mumsnetters really do live in a bubble 😂

Anything to offer on Justin Bieber performing in nothing but boxers at the Grammy's yesterday?
