To ask you to swerve vacations abroad on airplanes

As mentioned above, I personally don’t use Shein or Temu because they ARE terrible. However, why only change bad things lower income people happen to be involved with, rather than starting with things higher income people are involved with

Slave labour and poor working conditions are indeed terrible. So is the climate crisis, exacerbated by rich people flying on airplanes for vacations, and poor people in low-lying countries like Bangladesh suffer worst environmental consequences

Who are responsible for the most emissions and who are suffering the most?

This Christmas? I know it’s mainly a cost thing but if it’s achievable, can people possibly manage with less stuff?

I do like traveling by train and used to when I was younger and had lots of time but it takes too long. Going with young children would be stressful too as we'd have to change stations numerous times that wouldn't be the case with flying.

I bet the posts on here about how easy it is to go to Europe by train or bus live in or near London and don't need the best part of a day to get there.

SetPhasersToStunning · 03/02/2026 14:45

Do you have children @Happyone99?

I prefer train travel over plane with kids

Could not agree more. We (as a family) do so so much to reduce our Co2e. Then I hear of folk asking ChatGTP or Co-pilot to do everyday tasks like it’s of no consequence at all. The water consumption alone that AI relies on is obscene. Utterly obscene. People only give a shit when it suits their virtue signalling.

Everytime you do a google search it uses AI

Who are responsible for the most emissions?

What a very good question. I know the answer, do you?

I'll give you a clue, it's not the UK and it's most definitely not UK once a year holidaymakers.

Crispychillifriedbeef · 03/02/2026 14:49

We are currently posted abroad. Flying is the only method to and from the UK so…

I moved from Google for this reason. I use ecosia now who claim to plant trees to counter act damage - or so I've been told, if you trust any tech company. But I do feel a little better about myself for having made the switch.

Whammyammy · 03/02/2026 14:51

No thanks. Take 4 overseas breaks per year (1 main, 3 mini) and about 15 business trips per year too (10 USA and 5 EU). I love travelling and would never stop.

Fupoffyagrasshole · 03/02/2026 14:52

I do heaps to try help the environment every Day! And it’s basically mostly pointless as it’s not being done on a bigger scale ! Big corporations etc it’s all fucked

I won’t buy from temu or shein never have and never will - for reasons you’ve said

in fact I basiclly only buy clothes second hand never new anymore (my goal this year is to stop buying new things) especially clothes - fast fashion awful for the planet

but I fly regularly because I love travel and the planes are going anyway whether I’m in it or not and rich people are flying around in private jets and helicopter's every day - too regardless

so I’m not gonna stop

soupyspoon · 03/02/2026 14:52

Plant trees to counter the damage?

Wheres that then? Do you get to see said tree?

Given the amount of searches taking place how many trees and what size plot is this on?

Its like the extra cost on flights for 'carbon offsetting'

Full of BS

Terrribletwos · 03/02/2026 14:52

What is the water consumption from AI, I would really like to know?

BellaLunaa · 03/02/2026 14:53

We go on 3 long haul holidays a year and I won’t be giving that up.

We currently have two long haul holidays booked and 3 short ones for this year.

I also buy from shein occasionally. However I buy the majority of my clothes from Vinted, I am vegan (although I prefer the term plant based), grow my own vegetables and our child was potty trained using elimination communication from a young age so I guess this all may level my foot print out? Not that I really think about it to be honest. Everything is legal anyway.

soupyspoon · 03/02/2026 14:54

Me too and when I said google search above I meant internet search in general

I use google as shorthand to mean the internet.

I would like to know how its different to whatever me typing right now is costing the earth?

NewGoldFox · 03/02/2026 14:54

I don’t take holidays abroad and people look at me aghast when I tell them I’ve only been abroad once.

KimberleyClark · 03/02/2026 14:54

If you've had children you've already affected climate change more than someone without kids going on an annual holiday abroad.

Namingbaba · 03/02/2026 14:55

Flamingojune · 03/02/2026 14:46

It's fine if you're just going from one station to another but like I said if you're going further and have to change stations multiple times it would be a pain. When I went to Valencia from Edinburgh I had 4 separate trains and sometimes the station I arrived at wasn't the one I had to leave from so I had to travel across the city to get to another train station. That's a much bigger headache, especially as you're carting luggage on and off, up stairs and lifts, into taxis, metros etc Not to mention the wait times. Whereas taking a plane from Edinburgh to multiple destinations in Spain is just a few hours in a plane.

Hope was at least some people could see the irony, double standards, classism. And some have. Therefore, I am happy.

For fucks sake who cares, you attention seeking flump 🤣

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 03/02/2026 15:01

I see the problem, OP, and wanted to do something about it.

That’s why I now only book through Super Eco Smuggerama Travel Ltd.

They don’t care where you’re going, except whether you’re crossing the sea or not. If you’re not crossing the sea you get the holiday destination booked by them and the delivery of as many roller skates as your family needs.

If you do want to travel overseas they book the accommodation but supply a pedalo in one of various sizes.

We’ve never actually made it to the cottage, villa or hotel we’ve booked. But we’ve had such fun trying to get there. It’s really brought us all together - and we’re on first name terms with loads of people in various hospitals and in the RNLI.

And the environmental benefits are massive.

HNRTFT but I think you have chosen the wrong time of year to lecture people on holidays abroad! It has been passing down for weeks and the prospect of a warm climate for a week or two is keeping me sane !
Have a word with the frequent flyers in their private jets instead.

Classist?

You do realise it's cheaper to fly abroad than spend a week at Center Parcs?

mondaytosunday · 03/02/2026 15:12

We are going long haul next month - first trip in a couple years as I hate flying. When my DH was alive he flew ALOT. About twice a month he made a trip. If it was Europe he took the train, but often it was the US or somewhere equally far away. I do think some of this travel was unnecessary (he flew to NY for a lunch meeting and was back 24 hours later). Those kind of things should be reduced, plus all those mini breaks that could be via a train - when I was going to Glasgow four years ago everyone told us to fly! If you add in the drive to the airport, time for check in and waiting, it wasn’t that much quicker than the train, which was what we did.

kiwiane · 03/02/2026 15:12
