Epstein and the Monarchy. Question?

Netcurtainnelly · 03/02/2026 11:39

AIBU to think the Epstein stuff proves why the monarchy shouldn’t exist?

Inherited privilege, public money, and somehow still “not our place” to demand accountability. Funny how equality before the law stops at the palace gates.
AIBU? 👀

I hear you but the monarchy really is the least of it. They're a lighting rod for dissatisfaction over accountability (or lack of) but it pales in comparison to other things coming out at the moment (Mandelson)

MiddleChildX · 03/02/2026 11:48

We didn’t need Epstein to prove the monarchy shouldn’t exist.

FuzzyWolf · 03/02/2026 11:50

What about the links with Epstein to Bill Gates, Elon Musk, Donald Trump, Peter Mandelson, Richard Branson etc… Why single out the British monarchy?

I agree with this. There are a lot more powerful people involved than Andrew and Sarah Ferguson.

Daytimenighttime · 03/02/2026 11:53

This whole Epstein affair is exposing a cesspit of behaviour relating to the rich and powerful in all walks of life. Of course the monarchy is part of this.

But I echo the concerns being voiced that turning all the attention onto the powerful figures is having the effect of the victims being totally lost .

I am as republican as they come, but if we didn't have a monarchy those parasites would try and attach themselves to whoever's in power. And men enjoy sexually abusing women and children in sufficient numbers anyway. A thorough overhaul of democracy and accountability required. It starts with us, the voters and funders.

MO0N · 03/02/2026 11:58

I'm against the monarchy but they are not the only group of highly privileged and untouchable elites.
I'd say that the wider problem is that of how to stop the tendency of money, wealth and power to compound once it is in the possession of a small group of people.

Because we're supposed to bow and scrape in their presence. Because they're leeches born into privilege who pop out occasionally to wave at the plebs. Because the whole concept of Monarchy is absolutely ridiculous.

MO0N · 03/02/2026 12:00

The monarchy seems to have mostly acted as useful idiots in service of those who were particularly skilled at manipulating others.

Because this is a British based site. Because the British public fund the royals and their excesses. Because the Queen paid a women her son claimed to never have met, 12 million...

Because the Monarchy are meant to lead by example. KC knew what was coming out and it is the only reason why AMW was stripped of his titles.

I would love to see them all fall and face justice, including the names in your post.

southerngirl10 · 03/02/2026 12:11

The British public like to separate the royals from what's going on in the real world. It's like they are concentrating SO hard, every minute of the day, doing what's best for us. They wouldn't get caught up in anything like this. Oh, wait a minute...

This. It’s a red herring.

This. It’s a red herring.

Completely. Focus on Mandelson who got paid for confidential government information.

peanutbuttertoasty · 03/02/2026 12:20

And Starmer who knew about him but appointed him anyway

I’m not sure that he knew about the selling of government information - the most egregious of his crimes - that only seems to have come to light last week.

Agree.
Lead by example.
Such privilege should be questioned now.

Heads need to roll. Making Andrew and Fergie the primary focus will be in the interest of the other actors in this abhorrent saga. Yes, the monarchy needs to be held accountable. 100%. And if it falls, it falls. But the monarchy as scapegoat, being made an example of, could mean that others get away with some truly awful and dangerous shit. It's not JUST the monarchy.

ginasevern · 03/02/2026 17:42

Because the British general public aren't expected to fawn, bow and scrape over Mandelson et al. They aren't shoved down their throats as "sweet" or "endearing" or "just like one of us". And the establishment don't encourage us to offer them blind love and devotion or to keep them in the lap of unquestioned luxury and tax exemptions. And Mandelson's mother didn't pay £12 million pounds to buy the silence of a trafficked young girl. A mother whom we are repeatedly told was of exemplary character and a role model for the nation.

Abolishing it is the only way to end the era of untouchable mediocrity. It’s absurd that in 2026, we are still granting diplomatic immunity and state protection to people who don't even represent the best of our country, let alone its laws. Dealing with the wider elite (I hate this word) problem is a massive task, but removing the hereditary layer is the most logical place to start. Why are we subsidizing a lifestyle for people who are effectively above the law while the rest of us play by the rules?

Bordershoppingtrolley · 05/02/2026 20:26

There are far more sensible, cogent, and relevant arguments for the abolition of the monarchy. I’m not sure why you’d go for this one.

MidWayThruJanuary · 05/02/2026 20:30

We should be told why AMW was having meetings with Libyan gun runners. Was he selling secrets to them?

MidWayThruJanuary · 05/02/2026 20:32

Why was Zara Phillips paid £200,000 by Johnny Hon? Which she initially denied but was forced into admitting when the Daily Mail found evidence.
They must think everyone is as stupid as they are.

blubberyboo · 05/02/2026 20:37

You think we should have someone like Trump instead?

Which monarch is named in the Epstein files?

MidWayThruJanuary · 05/02/2026 20:39

@blubberyboo
Why is Trump always trotted out as an example? There are many countries where the Head of State is a responsible respected person.

lazybone1 · 05/02/2026 20:40

Unfortunately many are. See below!

You think we should have someone like Trump instead?

Yes, the only alternative to the monarchy is Trump.
