Taking the Dog on Holiday Without Telling the Caravan Site… Am I Mad?!

1000 replies

oceanmountain · 02/02/2026 15:11

So I’m going away in a couple of weeks and had a dog sitter all sorted… and now they’ve just cancelled because of a family emergency.

I’ve tried everywhere and can’t find anyone else to take the dog on such short notice, and I really don’t want to cancel the trip and upset the kids. So I was thinking of just taking the dog with me and not telling the caravan site.

Has anyone ever done this? My dog’s tiny and doesn’t shed, so I honestly don’t know how they’d even notice.

My friend said I shouldn't do it but I cant see any other option?

😲😲😲 - I only read the first few posts of that thread, @Floatlikeafeather2 - I missed all the later stuff about her drinking etc. Even without that, I thought she was a bit unreasonable for not having her dogs safely on the lead in a car park - but what you’ve said puts her completely beyond the pale - what a low life.

I give up!!
Enjoy your day all consistently giving this poster what he wants, I am sure you are giving her a great laugh.
Have a good day all.

Well, you could be right, but, unfortunately, there are some (NOT ALL) dog owners that think like this. Their “fur babies” 🙄 trump anything else. 🤷‍♀️

Hopefully it is just a wind up.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 04/02/2026 12:30

Given that there have been several posters on this thread who have encouraged the OP to sneak her dog in, and have said they do it themselves, @Boomer55, it seems that, even if @oceanmountain is trolling us, there are others who really are this selfish and entitled - and I’m saying that as a dog owner who loves her dogs, but would not take them to somewhere that they weren’t allowed to go.

No!! What is wrong with you?

Dogs never been in kennels so not an option.

Maybe it'll like kennels more than a caravan.

walkingaroundsostrenegrene · 04/02/2026 13:37

No not "mad?!" but incredibly selfish. HTH.

@oceanmountain

There is always a first time, OP. It’s often much more OK than the owners worry about….

eastegg · 04/02/2026 13:51

My SIL and her family did this at a well known holiday park (not caravans). Hid the dog in the car. They found it when checking in at the entrance and turned them away.

LouiseK93 · 04/02/2026 14:26

Do you realise its not actually the fur itself that causes the allergies? No dog 100% hypoallergenic
Just dont take the dog and abide the rules.

I've often wondered what living without a conscience would feel like. Can you or others with the same view explain?

I'm sure there is a diagnosis 🤔for people like this.

Well I'd rather be a self righteous prick than an inconsiderate bell end but each to their own!

oceanmountain · 03/02/2026 08:45

Dangerous? Really... Yes we always hear of people that die due to being near a dog. 🙄Dont be so dramatic.

If that was the case, dogs wouldn't be welcome practically everywhere. I can take my dog into the Lego store and Pandora in my city centre.

My goodness @oceanmountain are you really that tone deaf. The site you’ve chosen has dog friendly caravans and you didn’t book one (for whatever reason it’s not the sites or future guests fault) and as such you are not permitted to have a dog in a dog free caravan.

It doesn’t matter how small, that it doesn’t shed hair or that you can sneak it into your car without being seen. The fact remains it’s not permitted by the site management.

You’ve asked for advice about it and you’ve been told it would be unreasonable and wrong etc but you seem to be determined to do what you want.

Either this is a wind up or you are the most self centred, selfish, arrogant, ignorant poster I’ve ever come across on MUMSNET. And that’s saying something!

And yes people cab die albeit thankfully it’s a rare event. Anaphylaxis Shock

Animal Allergy

Information is for anyone with an allergy to animals. It focuses on cats, dogs and horses but there is also a brief mention of other pets.

Like life threatening allergic reactions for example?

What, like hospitalised children who have had a severe allergic reaction to the OP's dog...?

You absolutely have to be on the wind up?

Come on now, @Billybea , don't be lazy! If you want to get a buzz out of being rude on Mumsnet, at least make an effort and start your own thread. That's what all the cool girls do, or at least the ones with brains. Oh, I see the problem.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 04/02/2026 17:03

Talkingfrog · 03/02/2026 22:29

It isn't something I would do.

Can you message abd say you are now considering bringing your dog, and ask if there are any dog friendly caravans available. If so would you be able to swap to one if you decide to be8ng the dog.

I am guessing there is an extra charge to bring a dog, because the caravans are cleaned in a different way. They will therefore be able to tell if someone has booked or been allocated a dog friendly van, but isn't bringing a dog, and look into swapping you over.

Could your friend ir a family member have the dog.

Talkingfrog
Could your friend or a family member have the dog.

It seems that OP is conveniently without any family at all for the purposes of her argument in this instance, and unsurprisingly without any friends who will step up either. (I mean, would you want to be friends with someone who cared not a jot for anyone but herself and her own convenience? Clearly the fact that it is school holiday week does not mean someone would not be able to look after a dog: after all, those of us with dogs somehow managed when our children were not at school.)

grumpygrape · 04/02/2026 17:08

OP still hasn’t answered the many posters quite reasonably asking why she wasn’t taking the dog on holiday anyway but now is happy to.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 04/02/2026 17:14

From her earlier replies, we gather that she was happy to dump it on someone else for the duration, but that person inconveniently had a family crisis and was unable to do as required of her. At a fortnight's notice; I do hope the family crisis resolves itself for that poor person, but if it's that much in advance it is probably quite dire.

Hence OP not having booked the (presumably more expensive, because requiring more cleaning) dog-friendly accommodation in the first place.

IpsyUpsyDaisyDoos · 04/02/2026 17:20

TheCheekyCyanHelper · 03/02/2026 21:42

Then don't take your kid to a pet friendly caravan park. Good luck finding one though. Most people teach their kids how to get over irrational fears in public places.

Spectacularly missing the point here.

OP has booked a pet free caravan. So if you'd also booked in the pet free section because of a fear of dogs, to find one in the pet free area would ruin your holiday, no?

LouiseK93 · 04/02/2026 18:41

I dont know why you bothered asking on here if you were not going to accept no for an answer anyway??
If you have such a low opinion of mumsnet why post on here?

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 04/02/2026 19:40

The actual answer to the question (which was "Am I mad?") is "probably not", with the rider "selfish and rather nasty, but not actually insane."

Jennaxoxox · 04/02/2026 20:36

Why did you ask the question? All you've done is defend your horrendously entitled opinion. Its not a dog caravan you should not sneek your dog in 🤣🤣 If your dog is so perfect why will no one keep after it for you 😵‍💫🤣
