Taking the Dog on Holiday Without Telling the Caravan Site… Am I Mad?!

1000 replies

oceanmountain · 02/02/2026 15:11

So I’m going away in a couple of weeks and had a dog sitter all sorted… and now they’ve just cancelled because of a family emergency.

I’ve tried everywhere and can’t find anyone else to take the dog on such short notice, and I really don’t want to cancel the trip and upset the kids. So I was thinking of just taking the dog with me and not telling the caravan site.

Has anyone ever done this? My dog’s tiny and doesn’t shed, so I honestly don’t know how they’d even notice.

My friend said I shouldn't do it but I cant see any other option?

No you're not mad, you're however selfish, and it's people like you who do this kind of thing that makes many places stop being dog friendly. Many people are allergic to the dander, not the hair. It gets everywhere. I clean holiday homes, believe me, we fkn hate people like you, especially when you let your dogs sleep on the bed. I've had to bin god knows how many sheets and duvet covers because entitled moron's allowed their 'fur baby' 🤮 greasy, hairy, dribble stained bedding. Gross. Can't imagine what their own beds are like.

NestaArcheron · 04/02/2026 09:02

What do you think the point of dog free caravans are, op? If it wasn’t an issue, they simply wouldn’t exist. Allergies are more than cleaning between guests - if you take your dog, I hope you get caught and fined. You are being incredibly irresponsible and selfish.

Changingtimes81 · 04/02/2026 09:10

Hmm1234 · 04/02/2026 08:55

is it a chihuahua you can hide? Doesn’t bark much I totally would and have done in ‘non dog friendly’ places before.
people in the comments put caravan cleaning standards up too high talking about allergies lol

Your the sort of person on hearing a child sitting next to you on an aeroplane has a serious peanut allergy would sneak them into your gob when the parents weren't looking. How sad & utterly inconsiderate of you that you would encourage someone to sneak their dog into a dog free caravan. Read the room.

Exactly this - LOL someone might have an asthma attack or anaphylaxis hahahaha

people like @Hmm1234 are so willfully ignorant they choose to believe a pet allergy is just the sniffles or a bit of a watery eye - it’s an affront to their dog nuttery that anyone could dare to be made unwell by their precious fur baby

jannier · 04/02/2026 09:21

Lbet · 03/02/2026 18:42

Oh dear really feel for you being in this situation especially as you had a dog sitter all sorted. Can you not find another dog sitter? You have two weeks to do so. Sneaking the dog in could well ruin your holiday as you will be looking over your shoulder and worrying you will be caught.

Personally you need to do what you feel is the right thing to do for you. Coming on here asking such a question only gives the mumsnet police the opportunity to fire away in giving your their orders.

Seriously.....would you say my kid eats nuts im sending nuts to school?
Are you related to the op or just as selfish?

Ivelostmyglasses · 04/02/2026 09:29

oceanmountain · 03/02/2026 08:45

Dangerous? Really... Yes we always hear of people that die due to being near a dog. 🙄Dont be so dramatic.

If that was the case, dogs wouldn't be welcome practically everywhere. I can take my dog into the Lego store and Pandora in my city centre.

So your caravan has no soft furnishings & you are taking an industrial cleaner with you?
So glad none of your children have asthma, as you pointed out earlier🙄. All dogs have a first time in kennels not sure why yours can't.
I've lost a friend to an asthma attack and have family who can greet a dog with no problem but become very unwell if they stay for a prolonged period of time in an enclosed space with soft furnishings where a dog has also been for a long time. Take your dog wherever you like, but not where it is advertised as dog free.
Think about it this way- if they cleaned dog free spaces with chemicals that could seriously harm your dog would you take it?

oceanmountain · 03/02/2026 09:00

Some of the comments on here.... I think are ridiculous. Completley bonkers but then again this is mumsnet where no one will answer the door.

My family are dead, my friends are busy as it will be school holiday week!

I'm going to look into rover but If I cant find anything suitable then I will be taking her with me. I wont be cancelling on my kids, she's been on lots of caravan holidays with us before so I know she wont wreck the place if we leave her for a hour or two on the evening.

If I get kicked out then so be it, although I have never paid attention to what anyone is doing in the van next to me. Why would I?!

Lol says the person who apparently has a dog too delicate to go the a kennel for the first time.

Arran2024 · 04/02/2026 09:53

We hired a massive cottage for a big birthday for 12 of us and brought our two dogs along. It was advertised as pet friendly but when we arrived, there was a message saying dogs were to keep outbof the bedrooms, and that they would know if a dog snuck in there and there would be a huge fee to pay. Thing is, everything was on one floor, with bedroom doors that opened if you leaned against them. Our dog was used to lying on the floor by our bed but we had to banish him to the kitchen - there was a big sofa there and my nephew slept on the sofa with the dog as he was so stressed on his own.

Still we respected the rule because the bedrooms were gorgeous and clearly not dog friendly and we didn't want to upset anyone or pay the fee.

DarkwingDuk · 04/02/2026 09:59

You absolutely should NOT take the dog.

some people are deathly allergic to pet dander, which ALL dogs have. You could cause someone to go into anaphylactic shock! It's wholly irresponsible.

Even if not deathly allergic you could ruin another child's holiday if they are in the van after you and have an allergy. Unless you plan on taking a steam cleaner and washing ALL fabrics in the van at 60 degrees you cannot guarantee not to leave behind allergens.

It would be wholly irresponsible of you to take a dog into a non dog van.

Your answers suggest you will selfishly proceed with your plan - let's hope you don't kill anyone for the sake of not putting a dog in kennels where people are trained to care for them. However I really hope you don't.

Atsocta · 04/02/2026 10:19

Poodlelove · 03/02/2026 23:31

Shocking , what happens if the next person / family has someone who requires an epi pen for a severe allergy to dog hair ?
This is so selfish , how would you feel ?
It could kill someone , just don't go .

Exactly! My friends little boy lands up in hospital after contact with animal hair, is she going to sanitise the whole caravan, I think not as she doesn’t sound very bright to even think of doing this, stupid woman.

PinkArt · 04/02/2026 10:26

oceanmountain · 03/02/2026 09:05

Never known so many people to so say have violently ill kids if they come into contact with a dog all of a sudden🙄

How would you feel if someone did have a bad reaction to the dog detritus you'll be leaving behind? You don't sound like you'd care in the slightest, but if someone checks into that van that isn't flagged for allergens and ends up in hospital?
I don't have animal allergies but have had a bad reaction to the detergents used in a Travelodge before. I woke up covered in a red rash and my eyes were almost swollen shut. It's a horrible experience to react badly to staying somewhere unfamilair like that and I was lucky that mine wasn't a more severe reaction.

DorothyCrowfootHodgkin · 04/02/2026 10:26

Unsurprising that the OP has not returned. She has nothing more to say that won't make her look even more entitled, rude, and unable to understand why she is the one in the wrong.

A common disease....Jackitis otherwise known as im alright sod anyone else.

OutieModeOn · 04/02/2026 10:46

As a parent to a child with pet hair allergies I am so bloody sick of how entitled dog owners have become in this country. It seems "no dogs allowed" has been interpreted as "well ok if you must".

I hope you never have to deal with a wheezing child having an allergic reaction.

Livpool · 04/02/2026 10:53

You’d be very selfish to do this but you arsed. A lot of people are allergic to dogs and their dander sets my asthma off.

You definitely cannot take a dog in a caravan that isn't for dogs.

Agree!!! How many times must she be told that, it’s people like her that spoil others holidays,..and in this case risk others health.
someone will spot or hear it, and report her…Good!!!

She wouldn’t give a monkey’s…otherwise she wouldn’t do it!
she’s as thick as lumpy custard! And will get caught and charged for the extra cleaning etc needed.
i love my dogs, but not everyone is a dog lover, and allergies can be very nasty, wouldn’t in a million years under any circumstances do that. What a selfish plonker!!

Saladbrains · 04/02/2026 11:50

99pwithaflake · 02/02/2026 15:22

That's not how allergies work. Don't be a dick.

This. I completely agree.

Just don’t do this OP. You could make someone very ill, or even worse.

50Balesofgrey · 04/02/2026 11:51

There is no reasoning with people like OP. Her children are being taught to do as they like, regardless of rules. So they will grow up with her moral compass.

Saladbrains · 04/02/2026 11:55

oceanmountain · 03/02/2026 15:20

Are you ok? you sound a bit unhinged.... or bored. I cant make up my mind. Going to phone the site😂

No I haven't told the site that I wanted a dog accommodation.

I made a separate enquiry to book a dog friendly caravan at their site and they told me they were sold out for my dates. I said thank you and hung up. I used my work phone and didn't give any details about my existing booking, I didn't even give my name or booking reference.

It’s all about getting away with it from you, and no consideration for subsequent visitors who may suffer because of your selfishness.

Please don’t behave like this.

MadMadaMim · 04/02/2026 12:07

I have a dog and he goes everywhere with me. When I've booked/ made proper arrangements.

What I don't do is put others' lives at risk. It's dog owners like you who give the wider dog loving community a bad reputation.

The site has dog friendly vans for a reason. And dogs are not allowed in other vans for lots of reasons.

And yes, please can die from dog allergy - asthma attack, anaphylaxis etc.

People with allergies take precautions to keep themselves safe. The main one being not exposing themselves to risk

You and your entitled view to simply ignoring the set up is putting people at potential risk of death or a really horrible itchy, asthmatic sneezy holiday. But that's ok because it's not you and your children

Do you hear yourself? Completely self absorbed and selfish.

Don't take the dog. Put it in kennels. It'll survive, you'll have a good holiday, children won't be disappointed and future bookings won't be at harm of unpleasantness, hospital stay, death

Dog allergies can be dangerous, ranging from minor irritation to life-threatening reactions
. While often causing sneezing and itchy eyes, they can trigger severe asthma attacks, chronic sinus infections, and, rarely, anaphylaxis—a rapid, fatal reaction causing throat closure and severe breathing issues.

Port1aCastis · 04/02/2026 12:09

I've already posted that I have holiday lets and no longer want dogs in my cottages but I didn't mention people letting dogs use the gardens as a toilet with no clearing up
People on this site are always unhappy with early departure times for guests in holiday let's but if the cleaners or myself have to de-dog a garden and house before starting on normal cleaning we'd need the place empty even earlier.

TeapotCollection · 04/02/2026 12:10

I am totally stealing Jackitis 😆 thank you @jannier for giving me a laugh, that’s hilarious and it’s definitely going into my dictionary

I couldn't read beyond the first post of the dog/parking thread, it gave me such rage.

It was one of those posts that make me think that there should be some sort of test before anyone's allowed to have a dog, to make sure that they're not a complete idiot. And I say that as someone who's spent more than 40 years sharing their home with various dogs.

If you had stuck around you would have discovered lots of other things about that poster which would have horrified you even more - a bottle a day vodka habit (seems to think it makes it better that it's split into a half bottle in the morning, beginning first thing, and another half bottle at night); drives drunk daily (obviously including the day of The Incident) and, despite three convictions for drunk driving, says "I have no remorse"; stated that because the responses were not to her liking, she wishes she'd smashed his windscreen (remember there were children in the car).
Just like this poster, she refused to acknowledge that she was irrefutedly wrong. In that case it was standing, chatting, in a car park, with cars coming and going, while her elderly, deaf and frail dog wandered about off lead. In this case it's knowingly risking someone else ending up in hospital at worst and having a miserable wheezy time at best. There's so much similarity in attitude that I have to conclude, that this poster is an equally despicable person and possibly also has her judgment clouded by drink something.
