Taking the Dog on Holiday Without Telling the Caravan Site… Am I Mad?!

1000 replies

oceanmountain · 02/02/2026 15:11

So I’m going away in a couple of weeks and had a dog sitter all sorted… and now they’ve just cancelled because of a family emergency.

I’ve tried everywhere and can’t find anyone else to take the dog on such short notice, and I really don’t want to cancel the trip and upset the kids. So I was thinking of just taking the dog with me and not telling the caravan site.

Has anyone ever done this? My dog’s tiny and doesn’t shed, so I honestly don’t know how they’d even notice.

My friend said I shouldn't do it but I cant see any other option?

Why ask the question if you’re going to do it anyway and bash people telling you not to? How do you know the family staying in the caravan after you don’t have dog allergies? Selfish idiot.

Sennelier1 · 03/02/2026 18:58

Should bringing your pooch into a dog-free hotel and having him sleep in your bed be of the same order? I hope you get caught because what you are planning is unacceptible. My grandchild could go in anaphylactic shock by sleeping in a bed / or a caravan where a dog has slept.

howshouldibehave · 03/02/2026 18:58

No, you are not 'mad' for considering this. Just unbelievably selfish.

Dogs never been in kennels so not an option.

Just because the dog has never been in kennels before why is kenneling not an option? Presumably there’s a first time for every dog and a good kennel will be good with a first time visitor. It does appear to be your best option.

Atsocta · 03/02/2026 19:03

You can’t do that, I’d phone and see if you can change to a dog friendly caravan
your bound to get caught and be asked to leave the site.
its an unkind thing to do anyway, as most likely won’t be any other dogs nearby, and could be children afraid of dogs etc

oceanmountain · 02/02/2026 15:19

There would be no children in my van with allergies and I will clean before I go? and surely the site cleans the caravans too... no hair will be left as she's a non shedding breed

Don’t do this… apart from anything else many caravans are privately owned and let out by parks… it’s possibly someone’s holiday “home”.. I have two dogs… this comes with the territory, sometimes you have to cancel something because of them as you might with an ill child or whatever. You can’t eliminate the dander from dogs which is what some people are allergic to so potentially you ruin the next families holiday or the owners caravan for their use. It’s crap and frustrating but it’s the absolute height of entitled behaviour to do this and as someone who owns and loves their dogs you also end up being someone who gives all dog owners a bad rep… All dogs shed something, all dogs smell of dog, all dogs have the potential to have an accident inside or an upset stomach or chew/scratch something it’s why some holidays homes are not for dogs. It’s the owners choice not yours I’m afraid. I hope you find a solution!

Jumpers4goalposts · 03/02/2026 19:06

The van you are staying in is probably privately owned and they have decided that they don’t want dogs in there for whatever reason but it’s their choice and it is not up to you to force your dog on them. You really are giving dog owners a bad name with your entitlement. As long as you and your kids are alright?!

Have you tried dog boarding places in the area that you are going too?

I'd say she's just too cheap to fork out for kennels or her dog doesn't have up to date vaccinations due to her cheapness and or lack of care for said dog so wouldn't be allowed in the kennels anyway.

Maybe @oceanmountain will be lucky with her premium bonds next month then she can afford it .

Good point. Some people might choose non pet caravans/area due to fear.

Liladog · 03/02/2026 19:13

Not a chance @oceanmountain had ever had a dog sitter lined up. Nope. No way.

Dawnb19 · 03/02/2026 18:46

I used to clean hire caravans and if someone got away with sneaking their dog in a caravan that wasn't dog friendly then we would have to charge them extra cleaning fees and decommission the caravan for a few days for extra cleaning. We had to work overtime for this and would not have time in a normal day for this. The people who booked the holiday caravan after you would have to be refunded. I know some people have been asked to leave as they had a dog as well. Whoever is nextdoor would probably tell on you.

Edited

That’s really sad that it would mean the next people miss their holidays due to the extra cleaning needed. But totally understandable.

Youre the exact type of modern person i hate
A growing number of you too - real shame for society

WhatsTheEffingPoint · 03/02/2026 19:17

You said you couldn't get a refund in a previous post, so what did you ask them to know this?

Most places like this will have heard every excuse in the book and can spot BS when they hear it. They might be more open to moving your dates etc if your honest with them.

I manage a No Dog site and last year I had someone drive past 4 signs saying this yet they still thought they could get away with it. Other people staying on site noticed and let us in the office know. We watched the CCTV for a few minutes to further prove the presence of said dog then went and asked them to leave. I had every excuse possible as to why they couldn't leave, even trying to guilt me in front of their young son. It didn't wash, they found a local dog boarder for the night and I made sure they left and returned to the site without said dog. We have also made a note on their profile for future reference.

So in short you will be found out, they will see it!

Poppy61 · 03/02/2026 19:22

Still curious as to why you weren't taking your dog away with you in the first place?

JustMeAndTheFish · 03/02/2026 19:26

Please don’t. Some people are very allergic to dogs; I’m much improved now, but as a child I couldn’t even go to kids parties if there was a dog in the house - even if it was hidden away in another room.

RosyDaysAhead · 03/02/2026 19:27

many holiday sites lease owner caravans for to meet their holiday bookings - Haven definitely do this. I think you are incredibly entitled and selfish to take a dog… even a non shedding one. If you are discovered you will be asked to leave and that will devastate your kids, you may also be blacklisted from cooking with that company again too. If the dog becomes distressed and chews something, even if they’ve never done this before, you will liable and open yourself up to being sued by the company for loss of earnings if they have bookings after yours that they can no longer honour. And if the caravan is an owners van you will also be liable for their repairs.

just book the dog into a home from home kennels there’s loads about.

Holymotherforkingshirtballs · 03/02/2026 19:28

oceanmountain · 03/02/2026 08:45

Dangerous? Really... Yes we always hear of people that die due to being near a dog. 🙄Dont be so dramatic.

If that was the case, dogs wouldn't be welcome practically everywhere. I can take my dog into the Lego store and Pandora in my city centre.

Dog dander can stay in and environment for up to 4-6 months after a dog has left. Even if you hoover up all the hair you can't see the dander. All dogs shed dander. This could make someone with a dog allergy very unwell for example could cause them to have an asthma exacerbation.
These people should feel confident when booking a dog free caravan that it is just that.
You are clearly going to do what you want but it is incredibly selfish and could cause others harm.

SpanielLover356 · 03/02/2026 18:18

There are many places that I can take <my clipped, but hair-shedding> spaniel. I still wouldn't dream of housing her in non-dog friendly accommodation mainly because I'd never forgive myself if a child or adult had an asthma attack or <God forbid> died because of an allergy.

I've been in dog-friendly hotels & reported other residents who left their dogs in rooms to bark & howl for hours while they partied. It's not fair on other residents & give us responsible dog owners a bad name.

When in a dog friendly hotel my dog is always given a very long walk so that she's so tired she only wants to sleep when leave her in our room while we eat. Once we've finished eating one of us collects the dog, takes her out to stretch her legs & have a wee & she joins us for coffee in the dog-friendly area. Never any problems.

An example to dog owners everywhere 😁

My goodness there are some really nasty replies on mumsnet lately call yourselves parents. Just because you don’t agree with other posters doings it doesn’t give you the right to lay into them.

IpsyUpsyDaisyDoos · 03/02/2026 18:16

Hopefully that didn't cause anyone with allergies a reaction when they arrived after your kitten had stayed there.

Well done you for breaking rules that are in place for a reason.

Oh bore off - there was no rule in place saying I couldn’t and people had dogs. This was back in the day when the whole world didn’t have allergies and you could eat / drink / do what you wanted (within reason) without getting slated for it or having to have someone else’s opinion on it. There was no follow up call from the site to let me know someone died from my kitten being there

So completely different to the OP

No rule you couldn’t bring a cat. So you did. So why “sneak in”?

Hate to break it to you, but allergies existed before you did.

You sound delightful.

KingdomCome1 · 03/02/2026 19:39

You are the kind of entitled human being who makes overall life just that bit worse for the rest of us who understand why there are particular rules and conventions and follow them. People like you are so utterly self-absorbed, selfish and entitled. To be honest, I can't quite understand why you posted, since you are so convinced of your own right to behave however you like, regardless of the impact on others, that you will go ahead and do what you want regardless.
