Taking the Dog on Holiday Without Telling the Caravan Site… Am I Mad?!

1000 replies

oceanmountain · 02/02/2026 15:11

So I’m going away in a couple of weeks and had a dog sitter all sorted… and now they’ve just cancelled because of a family emergency.

I’ve tried everywhere and can’t find anyone else to take the dog on such short notice, and I really don’t want to cancel the trip and upset the kids. So I was thinking of just taking the dog with me and not telling the caravan site.

Has anyone ever done this? My dog’s tiny and doesn’t shed, so I honestly don’t know how they’d even notice.

My friend said I shouldn't do it but I cant see any other option?

My goodness there are some really nasty replies on mumsnet lately call yourselves parents. Just because you don’t agree with other posters doings it doesn’t give you the right to lay into them.

There's a difference between disagreeing and someone blatantly saying they don't care if they hurt someone else as long as they can go on holiday.

Posters are entitled to be angry when an OP raises a sensitive subject such as taking a dog into a dog free van. She asked if it's OK, read the responses & more or less came back with F you all I'm doing it anyway. People with a dog allergy understandably become angry when they put a lot of time & effort protecting themselves & loved ones from being subjected to the allergen then having OP throwing the responses in their face as if it's of no concern to her. DREADFUL BEHAVIOUR!

There would be no children in my van with allergies and I will clean before I go? and surely the site cleans the caravans too... no hair will be left as she's a non shedding breed

The allergy concern is NOT about your children but those that stay after you have left. You could ruin another family's holiday.

Please put your dog in kennels or speak to the holiday company.

MrsVBS · 03/02/2026 19:45

No it’s complete selfish, as someone who used to have a holiday rental it’s beyond rude, if it says no pets that’s what it means, we had people do that to us, regardless of any extra mess think about people with allergies etc who stay in there after.

As someone who suffers with anaphylaxis which can be triggered by dander this is so selfish of you. Those of us who suffer with allergies should not have our lives put at risk because of your entitlement. Put the dog in a kennel or cancel and think of the effects your idiotic actions could cause

I mean if your child had a bad pet allergy and your holiday was ruined because of someone like op you can see why people are angry.

I’ve you’ve ever owned a static caravan starting old preowened at £14,999 all the way to over £100,000 and rented it out as pet free to come back and find it stinking of dog or with fur or fleas. You’d be angry.

Even if you just don’t like dogs where you’re staying again you’re allowed to be angry that someone like op again makes it so your nice clean pet free caravan actually has a whiff of dog, the odd missed bit of fur and to those of us who are “just” sneeze allergic suddenly dosing up on pills on what was supposed to be a PET free caravan.

All reasons to be mad with arseholes who take their dogs where they are not wanted or allowed.

Arseholes make the world a worse place and it’s their actions that make others rightly angry.

Dog is very small, thing toy breed and doesn't bark.

I would take it out with me in the day for a walk but would be left in the van for a hour or 2 in the evening while we see the entertainment on site/arcades for the kids.

It's not just question of your dog being quiet or well behaved, its the allergies it could cause others afterwards. Dog allergies are caused by the dander (dead skin cells) and not the hair/fur. I know what it's like being let down at the last minute like this, but please don't make your problem someone else's. As has already been suggested, ask if a deep clean would be sufficient. Be prepared for them to say no though. Good luck.

My wife is SERIOUSLY allergic to to dogs so we book dog free caravan and b and b ‘s

unless you take lots of blankets and rugs and keep the dog off the bed and keep the windows open the whole time with a hepa filter running 24 hours you run the risk of spoiling someone else’s holiday

or you may get lucky , no one spots the tiny dog and the next guests are healthy people

Loveapineapplepizzame · 03/02/2026 19:49

What actually is the point in asking when you blatantly ignore what anyone has said?! Ask the caravan site!! They may agree to it provided you pay a premium cleaning fee

As others have said, it’s people afterwards who will use the caravan who may have allergies. Id hate to think of some poor child with a dreadfully bad allergy using the caravan after you.

We have dogs - I totally get the inconvenience when you’re let down with dog care. In the instance this happened to us it’s kennels or absolutely begging anyone else to have them - or worst case we just couldn’t go. We’ve had this before with a last minute abroad holiday - booked without checking kennel availability first but thankfully a friend stepped in to have them. We’d never sneak our dogs in anywhere - and I learnt to get my kennels booked before I booked anything!!

Those of us who consider ourselves responsible dog owners understand too! Our dogs are so important to us but like our children are absolutely not entitled to disrupt, upset or hurt others.. I wouldn’t take a child to an adult only space and same for the dogs.. And even if it is child or dog friendly I expect them to behave and if they don’t we leave…

EdinaTheConfessor · 03/02/2026 20:02

This must be a reverse/wind up. I really don’t want to believe that anyone could be this selfish/entitled/cuntish.

Keepthecat · 03/02/2026 20:04

I wouldn't! Have you tried Rover dog sitting? Or is there a kennels near the caravan site where you could base the dog and take him/her out every day?

I’ve taken my dog many times to caravan parks for weekends away, short breaks. She’s small, quiet and rarely barks unless someone bangs loud and abruptly on the front door. I’ve always paid extra for a dog friendly caravan and take her for frequent walks. I’ve never once left her alone though and wouldn’t consider it. She’s perfectly behaved at home,!but it isn’t my property and I wouldn’t take the slightest risk of anything happening whilst I was out without her.

I personally wouldn’t sneak your dog onto the site, some owners do have more than one rental on site and do checks, some also stay on site themselves. The caravan you selected is not dog friendly for a reason. You must respect the owners reasons for that.

Put the dog in a kennel for the duration of holiday. It will be fine.

Hope you're not a mother. Clueless.

What has putting a dog in a kennel got to do with someone being a good mother?

Can you look for kennels or dog sitters near to the site or on the way to the site?

myglowupera · 03/02/2026 20:28

I don’t think you can own a dog and expect to have your own way when it comes to your dog. I think part of being a good owner is considering the world around you and that your choice to own a dog is going to impact you at times. You should be the one it impacts on rather than other people.

Derpytiger · 03/02/2026 20:29

I can always tell if I'm in a hotel room where a dog has been due to the smell that no amount of cleaning can remove completely. You are being utterly selfish to do this. If someone after you has a dog allergy and has a reaction you'll be ruining their holiday. Next time plan better, stop being so bloody entitled thinking rules don't apply to you. But I don't think you'll listen as the entire Mumsnet has told you yabu and typically you're absolutely certain you're not. 🙄

Sleepysleepycoffeecoffee · 03/02/2026 20:34

Don’t be a selfish, entitled arsehole. You can’t just take your dog to a non-dog friendly caravan just because it suits you.

I knew there would be one, Many are NOT fine and its very distressing for them. I worked in a kennel and at times it was heartbreaking
