Taking the Dog on Holiday Without Telling the Caravan Site… Am I Mad?!

1000 replies

oceanmountain · 02/02/2026 15:11

So I’m going away in a couple of weeks and had a dog sitter all sorted… and now they’ve just cancelled because of a family emergency.

I’ve tried everywhere and can’t find anyone else to take the dog on such short notice, and I really don’t want to cancel the trip and upset the kids. So I was thinking of just taking the dog with me and not telling the caravan site.

Has anyone ever done this? My dog’s tiny and doesn’t shed, so I honestly don’t know how they’d even notice.

My friend said I shouldn't do it but I cant see any other option?

Just wanted to say my husband, who currently has other health issues, plus asthma has been hospitalised twice with anaphylaxis from animal exposure. One tine was a caravan holiday. It causes his airways to swell.

My son is also topically allergic, good thing about this is we generally get warning bc he sneezes and itches and alerts DH to start antihistamines before true badness occurs. Its not all animals or all environments, but we, like you OP have no way of identifying.

We can meet dog in the street and its generally fine bc there's no concentration of allergen.

So please reconsider. You won't know what issues it might cause.

Its a dog friendly site but I don't have a dog friendly caravan and they have non left.

Look for a kennel or dog sitter in the area your going to....Do not take your dog in the caravan thats awful people are allergic....and everybody thinks their dog doesnt malt or stink.

Candlestickinthediningroom · 03/02/2026 18:25

Another OP who had no intention of listening to anyone who answers their post. They were taking the dog regardless of what anyone said. Or they're on a wind up... Because surely no one is this selfish and dense?

We've stopped going to caravans and absolutely won't set foot in any hotel that advertises itself as "dog friendly". The last time we did there was dog piss stains up against the side of the divan base of the bed and the wall and the room absolutely stank of dog...despite being a supposedly pet free room. Wtf is wrong with people. If you're not prepared to sacrifice holidays etc, don't get a dog.

She won't, she'll still bring her mutt with her and won't give a toss about people like your husband. I'm so sorry you have to deal with these selfish idiots. There are lots of responsible dog owners out there but unfortunately they're far outnumbered by these absolute tits. They're the same kind that let their kids run round your table at a restaurant and park in disabled bays without a blue badge. Just the dregs of society.

CoffeeWithMyOxygen · 03/02/2026 18:28

What is the point of this thread OP? Everyone is saying you’d be unreasonable to do this but you clearly don’t care, so why ask?

envbeckyc · 03/02/2026 18:28

If they had dog caravans, why didn’t you just book one of those originally?

Dogs can exacerbate asthma and eczema, you may be causing harm to future occupants in the caravan!

Given that you are struggling to find anyone to look after your dog, it may well be that it’s a lot more smelly, shedding and loud and annoying than you think!

OP you are unreasonable and selfish, and setting a terrible example as a parent to your children!

ThisMellowCat · 03/02/2026 18:29

Why have you come in here to ask people’s opinion when you clearly have no inclination to follow their advice.
you are clearly going to do as you please, but just so you are aware that this can happen and will come back to haunt you as you are not only putting someone in the caravan at risk, you are opening the business up to prosecution.

The worst-case scenario of taking someone with a severe dog allergy into a caravan where a dog has recently stayed is anaphylaxis, a life-threatening allergic reaction that can occur within minutes of exposure. a
Because a caravan is a small, enclosed, and often carpeted space, dog dander-the microscopic skin flakes that cause allergies - can be present in high concentrations, clinging to upholstery and remaining airborne.

Are you a troll.
Or just entitled chancer/ahole.
This country now seems to be over run with them.

Obviously you and your did rule the world and everybody has to bow down so you can do what you want. Whenever you want.

Grow up and try and be an adult.

Nah, just entitled, the type of person who thinks the rules don't apply to them 🙄

Dog is very small, thing toy breed and doesn't bark.

I would take it out with me in the day for a walk but would be left in the van for a hour or 2 in the evening while we see the entertainment on site/arcades for the kids.

Call them and see if they can accommodate your tiny dog.
Otherwise find a friend who can take him in while you are away.
If you bring it to hide and are found out which you will be, you could be fined or kicked out.

But OP doesn’t care, as long as her and her kids ah e a nice holiday then sod anyone else!

Sennelier1 · 03/02/2026 18:37

I think it’s extremely egocentrical to take a dog to a place where they are explicitely forbidden. Just use a dog-hotel.

YeOldeGreyhound · 03/02/2026 18:38

Createausername1970 · 03/02/2026 18:01

Yes you can. And it's so fucking annoying!

Dogs don't belong in shops.

Dogs can go where they are allowed. If a shop lets them in, they are doing nothing wrong.

MibsXX · 03/02/2026 18:39

oceanmountain · 02/02/2026 15:19

There would be no children in my van with allergies and I will clean before I go? and surely the site cleans the caravans too... no hair will be left as she's a non shedding breed

OTHER guests children after your visit! grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

yorkiegirl12 · 03/02/2026 18:40

You said your dog has never been in kennels before so it’s not an option….. why is it not an option??? You do realise all dogs have never been in kennels, until you put them in kennels 🤣 there’s a first time for everything, this sounds like a good time to me!

YeOldeGreyhound · 03/02/2026 18:41

WorkItUpYourBangle · 03/02/2026 18:15

So incredibly selfish and entitled. There are people with allergies that can't be around your shit machine. Leave it at home or don't go. It's not everyone else's fault that you decided to get a dog. I am so sick to the back teeth of how selfish most dog nutters are now. You've completely ruined any tolerance I had for dogs. It's just gone so far beyond insanity at this point. Well know that there are people out there completely sick and tired of it all.

All but one dog owner on here has also said OP is being VVU. Don't tar us all with the same brush please.

I think it’s unlikely that someone who has this level of allergy would be staying in a caravan on a site. The site owners would never be able to assure them that the caravan surfaces had never come into contact with a dog. Aside from someone sneaking their dog in, the caravan cleaners could have pets in their homes and pet hair on their clothes. You will have the same cleaners in and out of the dog friendly vans and the normal vans. And I would also think that bedding is washed together. Equally there may be different rules around assistance dogs who are allowed plenty of places where other dogs aren’t.

400rider · 03/02/2026 18:42

Daughter in law’s parents run a campsites with chalets.
They are not stupid, they will know if you arrive with a pet.
You will get a huge follow up bill, it’s not about whether your dog ‘sheds or not’. There is much more to it than that.

Why didn’t you book a dog friendly holiday to start with? This has now caused you so much grief.
I think you’re assuming your dog will not want to be in kennels against being hidden away in a holiday home. Every dog has a first time in kennels at some point. It would be a happier experience for everyone.

Lbet · 03/02/2026 18:42

Oh dear really feel for you being in this situation especially as you had a dog sitter all sorted. Can you not find another dog sitter? You have two weeks to do so. Sneaking the dog in could well ruin your holiday as you will be looking over your shoulder and worrying you will be caught.

Personally you need to do what you feel is the right thing to do for you. Coming on here asking such a question only gives the mumsnet police the opportunity to fire away in giving your their orders.

Dawnb19 · 03/02/2026 18:46

I used to clean hire caravans and if someone got away with sneaking their dog in a caravan that wasn't dog friendly then we would have to charge them extra cleaning fees and decommission the caravan for a few days for extra cleaning. We had to work overtime for this and would not have time in a normal day for this. The people who booked the holiday caravan after you would have to be refunded. I know some people have been asked to leave as they had a dog as well. Whoever is nextdoor would probably tell on you.

She doesn’t care. As long as she can take her poxy dog to a cabin rather than pay for a kennel she’s not bothered. It’s disgusting really that she’s not bothered about people’s allergies or anything.

OneBlueFinch · 03/02/2026 18:52

Unbelievably selfish and entitled behaviour OP. I hope it chucks it down with rain whilst you’re away and you have a grotty time.

cantbebothered101 · 03/02/2026 18:54

Why did you bother asking the question when you just ignore everyone’s responses and say you’re going to do it anyway!

Exmouthlady1965 · 03/02/2026 18:54

So, you post to ask a question yet slag everyone off for giving you the wrong answer. Calling people unhinged or deranged speaks volumes of who you are.

researchers3 · 03/02/2026 18:55

Saucery · 02/02/2026 15:15

I wouldn’t as it’s not fair on people with allergies who might stay in the caravan after you. Also, if they find out you have a dog with you they could ask you to leave with no notice.
Is it a completely dog free site or just an extra charge for dogs that you want to avoid paying?

One of my kids has allergies and we've suffered from this before. Not very fair.
