Taking the Dog on Holiday Without Telling the Caravan Site… Am I Mad?!

1000 replies

oceanmountain · 02/02/2026 15:11

So I’m going away in a couple of weeks and had a dog sitter all sorted… and now they’ve just cancelled because of a family emergency.

I’ve tried everywhere and can’t find anyone else to take the dog on such short notice, and I really don’t want to cancel the trip and upset the kids. So I was thinking of just taking the dog with me and not telling the caravan site.

Has anyone ever done this? My dog’s tiny and doesn’t shed, so I honestly don’t know how they’d even notice.

My friend said I shouldn't do it but I cant see any other option?

I used to be an accomodation manager for one of the biggest caravan chains in the uk. Please don’t do this. Is not fair in the staff who have to clean, it’s not fair on the guests after you and you risk being told to leave which im sure your children will find even more upsetting. But what you can do is ask for them to accommodate you and pay a premium cleaning fee if they offer that service. Used to be £50 but that was 15 years ago so no idea now. Otherwise, ah your dog is so tiny and no worries, I’m sure there will be People you know eagerly lined up waiting to look After it. Otherwise it’s clearly not as easy as you think.

Unless it's an invisible, silent dog, I don't see how this is even possible.

Saucery · 02/02/2026 15:15

I wouldn’t as it’s not fair on people with allergies who might stay in the caravan after you. Also, if they find out you have a dog with you they could ask you to leave with no notice.
Is it a completely dog free site or just an extra charge for dogs that you want to avoid paying?

Glitchymn1 · 02/02/2026 15:15

Is the site dog friendly? What if the next guest or owner is allergic?
It’s a really dishonest thing to do. You could be asked to leave/ reported and fined. I say this as a dog lover who has always had dogs and cats. A dog is a dog, doesn’t matter how hairy it is.

GreenGodiva · 02/02/2026 15:15

Sorry but no you can’t just take your dog off they have sold out of dog friendly caravans. What about children with allergies??? Don’t be so selfish.

Thingsthatgo · 02/02/2026 15:16

If it is not a dog friendly site then you are being massively unreasonable. If it allows dogs then just pay the fee for pets. Be aware that lots of sites say you cannot leave dogs alone in the caravan.

Crosspost. It might be worth asking about the extra cleaning fee in that case then.

Some peoples selfishness and entitlement knows no bounds.

Stop making your problem a problem for other people.

Unless it's an invisible, silent dog, I don't see how this is even possible.

Dog is very small, thing toy breed and doesn't bark.

I would take it out with me in the day for a walk but would be left in the van for a hour or 2 in the evening while we see the entertainment on site/arcades for the kids.

Put the dog in a kennel for the duration of holiday. It will be fine.

Ylvamoon · 02/02/2026 15:18

In the nicest possible way, people like you give dog owners a bad name. So, don't do it. Ask or find another solution.

Fluffyholeysocks · 02/02/2026 15:18

Please don't do this. Its not fair on those people who specifically want/require/must have a dog free caravan.

Dave57 · 02/02/2026 15:19

just speak to the site and explain situation.

There would be no children in my van with allergies and I will clean before I go? and surely the site cleans the caravans too... no hair will be left as she's a non shedding breed

You sound like you've made your mind up anyway. Everything everyone has said you've just argued against it, are you wanting people to give you permission or something?

Ohfuckrucksack · 02/02/2026 15:21

If you haven't book a dog suitable caravan, then no you can't just add a dog and hope no one notices.

They have allocated those caravans dog suitable for a reason. There may be an extra charge that they levy to manage extra cleaning.

You could try ringing them and seeing if it ispossible to designate your caravan 'dog friendly' for an extra payment or to ask if they can call you with any cancellations of dog suitable caravans.

Would you get your money back if you cancelled now?

So how will you take it out with you without it being spotted? 🙄

That's not how allergies work. Don't be a dick.

Ohfuckrucksack · 02/02/2026 15:23

She's going to smuggle it under her jumper in the dead of night to a distant location for a walk and pee/poo.

The kids will tell people you have a dog. Other people will notice. Other people will grass you up.

Being marched off the camp will not be a great memory for your children.

GallonHat · 02/02/2026 15:23

It's not the hair, it's the smell.

Dog owners are nose blind, but the rest of us know when a dog has been in an enclosed space. Even a teeny tiny little one. They all stink.

seasid · 02/02/2026 15:24

oceanmountain · 02/02/2026 15:14

Its a dog friendly site but I don't have a dog friendly caravan and they have non left.

Common sense is that if it’s not dog friendly then don’t take it??? Many people are allergic and specifically look for pet free accommodation. Even when cleaned when you’re gone, pet hair remains and is impossible to get rid of. It’s not fair for people to come for a relaxing holiday after you and have allergies affected all because you’re being selfish

madamegazelle1 · 02/02/2026 15:24

I book pet free caravans as we have alot of allergies- please don't do this as it really isnt fair and could literally ruin someones holiday

StrawberriesandBrylcream · 02/02/2026 15:24

Contact the caravan park and ask if you can pay extra for a deep clean etc.

If they say no, cancel. Pet allergies are normally because of the dander, saliva, or urine. Non shedding and the size of the dog is neither here nor there.
