Taking the Dog on Holiday Without Telling the Caravan Site… Am I Mad?!

1000 replies

oceanmountain · 02/02/2026 15:11

So I’m going away in a couple of weeks and had a dog sitter all sorted… and now they’ve just cancelled because of a family emergency.

I’ve tried everywhere and can’t find anyone else to take the dog on such short notice, and I really don’t want to cancel the trip and upset the kids. So I was thinking of just taking the dog with me and not telling the caravan site.

Has anyone ever done this? My dog’s tiny and doesn’t shed, so I honestly don’t know how they’d even notice.

My friend said I shouldn't do it but I cant see any other option?

Op will do what she wants so no point saying otherwise.

surely a tiny silent no trouble dog could stay with a neighbour or family member.

as parent of additional needs kid who is terrified of dogs, I’d be furious if I’d booked a van and my neighbour brought a dog. Don't care how small and inoffensive it is - it shouldn’t be there.

PurpleThistle7 · 02/02/2026 15:50

I think it's selfish and you'll get caught and feel really stupid.

I think the OP is having us on....

No, some people really are that selfish and entitled.

Fruitfiddler · 02/02/2026 15:50

You absolutely cannot do this - the reason they have ones that don't allow dogs is often for people with serious allergies.

Someone did this in my holiday let which doesn't allow dogs. Neighbour spotted it and dobbed them in. I had great fun standing by the side gate watching them pack up their car only 24 hours after they arrived.😁

sittingonabeach · 02/02/2026 15:51

@oceanmountain have you seen the thread about people with severe dog allergies?

oceanmountain · 02/02/2026 15:36

Dogs never been in kennels so not an option.

It's the first time for EVERY dog that goes to kennels for the first time, isn't it?

Book your dog into kennels and don't be so bloody selfish.

sleepwouldbenice · 02/02/2026 15:52

Step 1. Ask them site if they can accommodate. Seems unlikely
Step 2. Find someone to take dog
Step 3. Defer or cancel holiday

There would be no children in my van with allergies and I will clean before I go? and surely the site cleans the caravans too... no hair will be left as she's a non shedding breed

It's not the hair causes allergies; it's the dander (dead skin) and saliva. People with high sensitivities can react to non shedding dogs. In the case of my dh it can be a full blown asthma attack.
I realise this is crap for you your dog sitter cancelled but please don't ruin someone else's holiday.

Wakemeupinapril · 02/02/2026 15:53

Doesn't bark.
Doesn't shed.
Is your ddog battery operated?
I am allergic and ds and dh have asthma. I would be livid if I took your caravan after you've gone.
Ime caravans don't get cleaned to much of an extent...

Electricsausages · 02/02/2026 15:53

Please don’t take your mutt to a non mutt caravan even if ‘it’s small and doesn’t shed’
it will still bring other grot with it.

Thanksforyourlackofthought · 02/02/2026 15:53

Call the caravan park, offer to pay a premium for a deep clean and also ask if they can swap your caravan to someone that may have got a dog friendly caravan without a dog. It happens.

rwalker · 02/02/2026 15:53

oceanmountain · 02/02/2026 15:14

Its a dog friendly site but I don't have a dog friendly caravan and they have non left.

You’ve answered your own question

don’t be so selfish and put a dog in a caravan that’s not designated for pets
there kept separate for a reason alit of people have allergies that’s why they wouldn’t want a caravan that a dogs been in

Well it is an option, just one you dont want to take.

Can you just at home with the dog and the kids go away with their dad?

Cocopuff · 02/02/2026 15:54

Go on Rover - pay for a sitter to have the dog in their house. Go on your holiday and enjoy it. Don't risk losing the holiday

Dogs are everywhere in holiday parks, you cant stop a person taking their dog for a walk near you van. People walk their dogs around the whole site.

What did you hope to achieve from creating this thread? It's quite clear no one agrees you should do this!

If they have their own in house cleaners then it’s a very rushed statutory clean by minimum wage staff. If they contract it out then you will be lucky if the cleaner is paid more than £16 per caravan to clean the entire thing. Is impossible to do a thorough job. That’s what a gut clean is and that typically costs an extra £50-80 depending how filthy it is. And that’s why a pet friendly caravan charges more as they do a deeper clean. I’ve got a chihuahua, A Rotty and A hairless pug. My bald pug has about 132 hairs on her entire head and she still sheds. All dogs loose hair/fur just like people. The chihuahua sheds more than the Rotty .

shoopdoop · 02/02/2026 15:55

You may find someone responds to a FB post. Some dog sitters will take pity on you if you tell them about your situation and fit him in. Is it for a week? He will survive the kennels and a nice one will give the little nervous first timers a bit more attention. Is there any dog care near where you're staying so you drop him off and pick him up - it doesn't have to be near your home!

Bombinia · 02/02/2026 15:56

oceanmountain · 02/02/2026 15:36

Dogs never been in kennels so not an option.

You have a "no dogs"caravan so taking it is also not an option.

If its a dog friendly caravan you can tell them. If its not please dont do it. My dad has severe allergies to pet hair, and even dogs that dont shed as such still leave allergens. If say we stayed after you, it would mean my dad having a severe allergic reaction and not being able to stay in the caravan.

Fruitfiddler · 02/02/2026 15:57

oceanmountain · 02/02/2026 15:54

But that's very different to being in the van, potentially causing someone with severe allergies to have an incident.

maydayjun · 02/02/2026 15:58

No idea why you bothered asking you have obviously decided you are taking the dog. As long as you are happy and not inconvenienced that’s all that matters.

SouthLondonMum22 · 02/02/2026 15:58

No dogs means no dogs. Why do you think the rules don't apply to you?

TheGoddessAthena · 02/02/2026 15:59

oceanmountain · 02/02/2026 15:14

A total dick move if the people coming in after you have allergies.

Your dog will shed. And it will smell. I don't want to stay in a caravan where a dog has been the week before. Gross.

Pistachiocake · 02/02/2026 15:59

Most UK places are dog friendly, why not go to one of these? If your dog is quiet, it's unlikely people would notice him. At a hotel once, on our last day, we saw a dog leaving and chatted to his owner; he'd been in the room next door and the restaurant the same time as us, but we'd never realised!
