Taking the Dog on Holiday Without Telling the Caravan Site… Am I Mad?!

1000 replies

oceanmountain · 02/02/2026 15:11

So I’m going away in a couple of weeks and had a dog sitter all sorted… and now they’ve just cancelled because of a family emergency.

I’ve tried everywhere and can’t find anyone else to take the dog on such short notice, and I really don’t want to cancel the trip and upset the kids. So I was thinking of just taking the dog with me and not telling the caravan site.

Has anyone ever done this? My dog’s tiny and doesn’t shed, so I honestly don’t know how they’d even notice.

My friend said I shouldn't do it but I cant see any other option?

Please don’t do this. My DP suffers from allergies including asthma. If we stay somewhere where there has been a dog he can suffer reactions. We are always prepared for this and ensure we have suitable medication etc. with us but someone may end up in the accommodation directly after you and become unwell as a result.

It’s really surprising that your tiny, non barking, non shedding dog, that can be left for multiple hours unsupervised, has nobody willing to look after it with a couple of weeks notice 🤔

Indeed!
sounds like a dream dog sitting gig…

stargirl27 · 02/02/2026 15:42

This must be one of the most entitled posts I've ever read.

Coffeeishot · 02/02/2026 15:42

Reading your posts you are just going to do it why bother posting? We take our dog but it is dog friendly vans did you ask or just looked on the website, or you could cancel.

Thewonderfuleveryday · 02/02/2026 15:43

Do not do this. Other people have dog allergies even if you don't. Cleaning isn't that effective.

You'll have time cancel the holiday. This is why I (really sadly) don't have dogs, I couldn't handle day care and holiday issues.

Boopydoo · 02/02/2026 15:44

Saucery · 02/02/2026 15:15

I wouldn’t as it’s not fair on people with allergies who might stay in the caravan after you. Also, if they find out you have a dog with you they could ask you to leave with no notice.
Is it a completely dog free site or just an extra charge for dogs that you want to avoid paying?

This, I have an allergy to dogs and am sick of requesting dog free accommodation only to find someone broke the rules and thought it was ok to smuggle in a 'small' dog. I suggest you come on my holiday with me and witness the misery of my allergic reactions.

Inthedeep · 02/02/2026 15:44

@oceanmountain you are being incredibly selfish taking a dog into a caravan which isn’t dog friendly. Some people have really bad dog allergies and just being in an environment someone has recently been in with a dog could be really unsafe for them. Yes these caravans have cleaners, however the cleaning process is fairly perfunctory and won’t necessarily get rid of all traces of the dog.

stargirl27 · 02/02/2026 15:44

Why don't you read the current active thread re dog allergies?

Seawolves · 02/02/2026 15:45

The dander is a big allergen to those allergic to dogs. Don't do this, cancel your stay or change your dates.

bridgetreilly · 02/02/2026 15:45

The dog can’t be in the van. It can be on the rest of your site and in your car.

TomatoSandwiches · 02/02/2026 15:45

You are an adult who chose to take on a dog, your plans have been messed up, unfortunately that is part of life and if you don't have a back up plan or refuse to use kennels then you need to be a grown up and cancel your trip or stay home whilst your partner takes the children.

I'm sure you would be the first person to kick up a stink about selfish twats taking dogs to non friendly caravans if you or your child had a severe allergy so don't be a selfish twat, be the grown up here.

Starlight7080 · 02/02/2026 15:45

You are being so selfish . Use a kennel like most people do . Or book a dog friendly caravan .

Balloonhearts · 02/02/2026 15:45

No. Someone with severe allergies could still react even after cleaning. It's dander you react to, not hair. Allergies kill people, you can't take a dog into a dog free caravan without them knowing. How would you feel if it was you or your child with a dangerous allergy and had a reaction in a caravan they swore was pet free?

They'd have to give it a major deep clean afterwards to make it safe again.

OnlyMabelInTheBuilding · 02/02/2026 15:40

the precious cocker/cava/maltipoo could simply NOT go to a kennels!!!

Edited

I mean, what does she think kennels are? Some secret dog fighting ring?

JustAnotherWhinger · 02/02/2026 15:46

If you've already asked about a dog friendly van on the days you're going there will likely be staff on the lookout as they know entitled people will do what you clearly already intend to do regardless of what people say.

LilacReader · 02/02/2026 15:47

oceanmountain · 02/02/2026 15:19

There would be no children in my van with allergies and I will clean before I go? and surely the site cleans the caravans too... no hair will be left as she's a non shedding breed

Don't be silly - she means other children in after you with allergies!!

Op posted hoping for reassurance that is OK to take her dog to a holiday that does not accept dogs -

No dont do it. Iv arrived before where someone has clearly had a dog in a non pet caravan. Its rude and annoying. I like dogs, i dont want to live with them or where they have stayed where possible. I choose that option for a reason.

Billybagpuss · 02/02/2026 15:48

It seems you just won’t be told no, I’m a massive dog lover but I’m firmly of the opinion that there should be dog places and non dog places so everyone is catered for and they should be respected.

My dog bloody loves the kennel, she does doggy play sessions, agility, they’ve even got a swimming pool.

What about people using it after you who may have severe allergy , really unfair.
That's why they have dog friendly / no dog options.
And i'm a dog lover with 3 dogs who would not do this.

Createausername1970 · 02/02/2026 15:49

You asked if you were mad in your title.

No, not mad. Mad implies doing something without full mental capability.

What you are is entitled, disrespectful, and a total CF.

Hope that clears that up for you.

Jellybunny56 · 02/02/2026 15:49

How will your kids feel when they arrive and just as they get excited to go explore you get turfed off the site because you brought your dog?

I have a dog so it’s not an anti-dog thing, but you cannot just take one to a non-pet friendly caravan.

oceanmountain · 02/02/2026 15:14

Its a dog friendly site but I don't have a dog friendly caravan and they have non left.

I would imagine then that if the caravan you will be in is 'not dog-friendly', it is one that would be specifically requested by someone who is allergic to dogs, then? How do you feel about giving a subsequent occupant of this caravan, for example, a serious asthma attack?

"My friend said I shouldn't do it but I cant see any other option?"
You can see another option (cancel), you just don't like that other option.

"Dogs never been in kennels so not an option."
Again, it is an option, just one you don't like. But it is an option.

You've still got "a couple of weeks" before going so either book the dog in to a kennel, or cancel. Or find a family member / friend to take your dog. Those are your options. Taking the dog to a caravan that is specifically not for dogs is NOT an option.
