I know I'm not being unreasonable, but just please agree so that we can educate people,
Without rules, where are we?

Can you be more pacific OP?

That did make me laugh out loud 🤣

PermanentTemporary · 02/02/2026 01:04

Yes I use it sometimes as a Molesworth joke. It doesn’t bother me nearly as much as another thing coming, could of, etc.

As any fule kno

You lot need to put your sandles in the Chester drawers and go to bed.

Sangles

AllTheChaos · 02/02/2026 08:07

Indeed. As any fule kno.

I loved the Molesworth books when I was at school. If you didn't know the correct spelling you wouldn't find it funny though. My favourite character was Fotherington-Thomas 'Hello trees, hello sky'.

Thankfully MNHQ have been cracking down on the grammar police who humiliate those who aren't fortunate enough to be good at SPAG.

It really does put women off of posting even when they may need advice on domestic violence, care of their children, divorce, schooling or any other important subject you can think of.

If the grammar/typing/spelling of complete strangers annoys you this much, YOU are the one who needs to change or just leave Mumsnet.

No. Let's push back on these "I'm so affronted" posts. It's light hearted FFS, but at the same time it's pointing out a common, irritating mistake. Nothing wrong with that at all.

TrickyD · 02/02/2026 06:48

@BuddhaAtSea
Well I have a degree in Latin and have never seen ‘etcaetera’.

Promise you it’s a thing! A and E are together, as one letter (diphthong).
I had to do Latin (French curriculum), what made you choose Latin as a degree?

sesquipedalian · 02/02/2026 08:54

OP, you are unreasonable to raise this in AIBU. The place for this is in Pedants’ Corner, where the subject has been discussed before.

Dahliadaily · 02/02/2026 09:02

I’m with you all the way. Also misuse of “myself” “yourself”. And tell me, did we ever get to the bottom of “cuttla”?!

Freysimo · 02/02/2026 09:02

I've an elderly friend who uses "should of". I suspect this is down to her use of Facebook and not her eduction. If you see it written incorrectly all the time perhaps you assume you're wrong and they're right?

NormasArse · 02/02/2026 09:03

Moulez · 01/02/2026 21:46

I think everyone should have carte blanche to correct people on Mumsnet until we've wiped it out

That would be incredibly rude. Read the post for its message, not its grammar.

Moulez · 02/02/2026 09:27

@NormasArseno thanks.

My pet peeve is when people ask for ‘advise’. It’s ‘advice’!!
You can ask for advice.
You can advise someone on what to do.

Really grates on me! 😂

I can understand why it is a bit frowned on to point out someone's poor spelling or grammar on a post, you also risk making a complete tit of yourself if your own post has a mistake!

However, the OP is not doing that to any one individual. She is just giving an example of something that annoys her and that seems fine to me.

One tends to get used to and overlook much of the poor SPaG on the internet, plus one must bear in mind that phone predictive text can play havoc with what you intended to say. But just occasionally you see something so bad it does make you wince. Only this morning I was looking at a thread on Nextdoor and one poster had great long rambling posts with the wildest capitalisation imaginable. Real School of Donald Trump. E.g.

That's a very Bad Service Then ,thats why this Individual has the Attitude Problem that You Have Experienced.

I mean, just how does someone type something like that and think that's how it should be?

Doingtheboxerbeat · 02/02/2026 13:53

YesSirICanNameChange · 02/02/2026 07:23

I think that it's fine to have high standards for spelling, and that unless someone is posting about a dire/sad situation, it's actually ok to correct someone's spelling. Just a friendly "not sure if you're aware, but it's lose, not loose" can go a long way.

Parents should be modelling good attitudes to feedback anyway, so that their children accept and learn from feedback from their teachers. Not just parents, actually - everyone should welcome feedback and opportunities to learn and grow.

This is the approach 👆 please, correct me nicely because my spelling and grammar is atrocious and I would hate to see standards as a thing of the past - same with good manners.

Just don't be a d!ck about it. Unless you are a racist gobshite, spreading misinformation, then I will be there with my red pen discrediting you all day long.

Berlinlover · 02/02/2026 00:52

It’s annoying but loose instead of lose drives me insane.

This is my weakness and my phone is more illiterate than I am 😖.

Is there a handy rhyme or saying that makes it easier to remember?

They’re pronounced differently though? I’m not meaning to be a dick saying that, I’m just not sure how a rhyme would help if the root of the issue is that you kind of see them/‘hear’ them in your head as interchangeable. Is that what is happening when people confuse these two words? (Genuinely asking without judgement)

StrawberrySquash · 02/02/2026 14:18

InterestedDad37 · 01/02/2026 21:57

"everyone should have carte blanche to"

Do you mean 'kart blontch'? 🙂

I think you'll find it's pronounced blansh

HidethebiscuitsitsNellie · 02/02/2026 14:18

I remember by thinking ‘loose’ is all baggy with that extra ‘o’ in it.
And ‘lose’ has lost the other ‘o’

YesSirICanNameChange · 02/02/2026 14:31

I think another issue is the number of people, even on this thread, who say "don't criticise someone's SPaG if yours isn't perfect". Why not? It isn't a competition to see who has the best SPaG; it should be done in a well-intentioned way to teach, and if you're happy to teach, surely you're open to learn?

No one has absolutely perfect SPaG all the time and we all had to learn somewhere. I'm an ex-English teacher; the word "bureaucrat" (thanks predictive text!) is a weakness of mine - I can just never get it right first time! I'll never be upset if someone corrects me on it, even if I've just corrected someone else's spelling of a different word.

I don't understand how we've reached a point where we're so competitive that we can't accept feedback from other people without viewing it as a superiority thing.

Bankrupt, chauffeur, necessary, consensus, are a few of my bêtes noire, or is it bête noires ?

French O level is nearly 50 years behind me, but I'll tentatively suggest bêtes noires.
