Michelle Obama for President. Could you imagine where we would be now...

I'm watching Becoming on Netflix in solidarity with those in the US who asked for more people to watch it this weekend.

Michelle is so intelligent, calm and charismatic, and she has a fun sense of humour. Can you imagine where the US, the world, would be if Michelle had run for office. She would have been an excellent president.

It is a bit hard watching the documentary, as I find I am mourning the world as it was, and depressed about the state of it currently. But Michelle Obama is fascinating to watch, she's an amazing woman.

She didn't and doesn't want political power. Her book made that very clear.

TheActualQueen · 01/02/2026 15:22

Love Michelle. But totally understand why she wouldn’t run!

FeteofOphelia · 01/02/2026 15:27

MO now spends her time complaining about her husband and how much she disliked living in the White House.

Dweetfidilove · 01/02/2026 15:30

Nope, nope, nope!

We saw what happened after her husband took office. Folks were adamant they wanted different.

77 million people voted the current president into office for a second term. That's the president they deserve.
They do not deserve Michelle Obama.

Let that woman be at peace.

Topseyt123 · 01/02/2026 15:39

I think she'd be a fantastic president but can totally understand her reasons for not wanting the job.

She should be left in peace with her decision. It's one of those jobs where I actually wonder who the hell would want it anyway.

I do have sneaking sympathy with the person who has to take over the reins after Trump. Assuming that it isn't anyone at least as bad (Vance, anyone?).

TomatoSandwiches · 01/02/2026 15:40

It's the ones that don't want it that usually would do the best job. Such a shame.

Teado · 01/02/2026 15:43

She’d be very good. It’s a shame that she is not interested in running.

MakeYourOwnSunshine · 01/02/2026 15:46

I like Michelle Obama, but in a world where Americans didn't elect Hillary Clinton or Kamala Harris, I don't know why anyone thinks Michelle's chances would be any different, even if she wanted the job?

poetryandwine · 01/02/2026 15:53

I hold dual US citizenship and admire Michelle Obama hugely. I read Becoming and enjoyed it.

I would happily vote for Michelle for Representative, Senate, probably Governor of the large state where I still vote, and I think she would be a great Cabinet member. These are all jobs where accomplished people have succeeded in their first political forays, and have had real influence.

But President is not an entry level job. The only presidents in modern times with no prior political experience are Trump and Eisenhower. Trump is currently destroying the country and much of the world. Eisenhower didn’t exactly have political experience, but he commanded the European theatre in WWII and I think that is a unique and sufficient substitute. For all her outstanding qualities, it is no criticism of Michelle to point out that she lacks similar experience.

I would love for her to get some experience and then become president. Sadly for us I agree with PP that she has no interest in doing so. Probably wise, though.

She didn’t, and America does as it wants to. As it should. With the abysmal shower in charge of us, we really shouldn’t be passing judgement on other countries.

KimberleyClark · 01/02/2026 15:55

She has no political experience at all.

KimberleyClark · 01/02/2026 15:58

Of all the First Ladies of modern times, Eleanor Roosevelt could have done the job herself.

Yes, I realise she doesn't want to, and I completely respect that and agree with her choice.

My post was just about if she had, how different things would currently be.

I think that she would be assassinated. There's sections of the US that just wouldn't tolerate a black woman president.

As opposed to a pedophile who's bankrupted every business he has ever run?

GasperyJacquesRoberts · 01/02/2026 16:57

Given the absolute torrent of appalling racist and sexist abuse she got when she was First Lady I can well understand why she's not interested.

Having a black president permanently broke the brains of a terrifyingly large proportion of the US population. And it's got worse since then.

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 01/02/2026 16:58

I admire Michelle Obama.

But even if she had wanted the job, and she’d stood instead of Harris, that idiot Biden, his wife and his foolish party would have scuppered her chances just like Harris’s.

If the hypothetical includes ‘would she have been good if she’d stood in place of Biden in 2021?’, then probably yes, and certainly no worse.

True, but millions of people did vote for both Hillary and Kamala. Millions didn't bother to vote as usual in every election. It doesn't mean that the majority really didn't want a woman.

There is also the belief that Musk did some election tampering. So I guess unless there is an investigation, we'll never know if 'the US didn't want a woman'.

Yes, this is where that argument falls down for me every time.

Do people honestly think Michelle would have done a poorer job than trump because she doesn't have experience in politics? What experience does he have?

Obama spent his time bombing brown people all over the world and deporting more immigrants than Trump....

Why would his wife be any better?

I dont think people are saying that as such, but it’s a bit naive just to think that someone who comes across as intelligent and principled would make a great President. And she would be constantly aware of the shadow of her husband, and people would say he was the real president.

Hont1986 · 01/02/2026 17:28

We already know what a Michelle Obama term would have looked like, we got it in 2020. Biden was surrounded by the same DNC establishment that Michelle would have been.

This isn’t the right question. Biden should have announced early on that he was not running, and the Democrats should have had a proper primary process from which, hopefully, the strongest candidate would have emerged in a good position to beat Trump.

I was happy to vote for Kamala Harris but the process didn’t give her the time to put up a good fight, and it is possible that a proper process would have shown someone else to be a stronger candidate.

I don’t believe it was Michelle’s time, anyway. Elected experience first.

Trump’s lack of experience is a big part of his problem (though hardly the whole of it). We certainly don’t want the marvellous Michelle to be remembered as a poor president.

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 01/02/2026 17:39

She’ll moan about it non-stop.

From what she constantly kvetches about on podcasts, she hated the White House.

You know what? I ain't go argue with anyone on anything that says she should go nowhere near the White House. 🥂
