Michelle Obama for President. Could you imagine where we would be now...

I'm watching Becoming on Netflix in solidarity with those in the US who asked for more people to watch it this weekend.

Michelle is so intelligent, calm and charismatic, and she has a fun sense of humour. Can you imagine where the US, the world, would be if Michelle had run for office. She would have been an excellent president.

It is a bit hard watching the documentary, as I find I am mourning the world as it was, and depressed about the state of it currently. But Michelle Obama is fascinating to watch, she's an amazing woman.

I think that she would be assassinated. There's sections of the US that just wouldn't tolerate a black woman president.

It's wild to pretend that you genuinely believe this when the only bullet that hit a president in living memory came from your own side

I adore Michelle and would love to see her as President. The Obamas share Presidential qualities which is a cool level head, a lack of ego and an ability to see the bigger picture and not be distracted by the mayhem.

Sadly it won’t happen as they are now addicted to the cult of aggression and personality.

This isn’t the right question. Biden should have announced early on that he was not running, and the Democrats should have had a proper primary process from which, hopefully, the strongest candidate would have emerged in a good position to beat Trump.

I was happy to vote for Kamala Harris but the process didn’t give her the time to put up a good fight, and it is possible that a proper process would have shown someone else to be a stronger candidate.

I don’t believe it was Michelle’s time, anyway. Elected experience first.

Trump’s lack of experience is a big part of his problem (though hardly the whole of it). We certainly don’t want the marvellous Michelle to be remembered as a poor president.

Agree, but in the current climate, I like to imagine her there instead of trump.

I dont think people are saying that as such, but it’s a bit naive just to think that someone who comes across as intelligent and principled would make a great President. And she would be constantly aware of the shadow of her husband, and people would say he was the real president.

but it’s a bit naive just to think that someone who comes across as intelligent and principled would make a great President.

Right now I would love to have someone who could be described as intelligent and principled.

I used to be a big fan of hers, but I listened to her being interviewed on a podcast recently and she was going on about what a fantastic person she is, she came across as extremely narcissistic, it really put me off her.

It's the ones that don't want it that usually would do the best job. Such a shame.

Exactly this!

I wonder how she'd feel about being uk PM instead??

id be happy to bend a few rules to make it possible! 🤣

She’d be very good. It’s a shame that she is not interested in running.

Yes A great shame. But I don't blame her!!

The Democrats need a middle of the road white male candidate with a bit of personality.
America is not going to elect a woman, much less a black woman. Unpalatable, but not as Unpalatable as the consequence of them failing to grasp this fact.
The were idiots for putting up Hilary Clinton and Kamela Harris.

ACynicalDad · 01/02/2026 19:13

I think the Americans are not yet ready to vote for a female president, let alone a black one, if she stands she is gifting the republicans another 4 years (I say this as someone who thinks she'd be plenty good enough. Trump beat two people, the only two female candidates for president.

I suspect the first female president, when it eventually happens will be a Republican, (or a time that two women are nominated) but even then a load of their base will probably stay at home.
