Now I know what I put my parents through when I was a kid (which they also agree with ) and how mind numbingly boring it was for them to endure. My 12 year old regularly shows me dances /songs/ shows anything drama she's created with her self/ her siblings god it's so mind numbing to sit and entertain.
I know I'm being unreasonable but nope can't stand that part of parenting anyone else with me ?

I mean, how often is it happening and for how long? Can’t be more than say, 20 mins a week, surely?

Starburst360 · 31/01/2026 18:29

😂 I get it. For me it’s imaginary play. I can do all the making things, board games, books etc but when I have to pretend to be a doggy or play mummies and daddies something inside me dies!

Fatiguedwithlife · 31/01/2026 18:32

Thankfully none of my 3 have ever felt the need to do these types of performances. I was just thinking about that the other day! Sometimes when DD2 has friends round they want to do some kind of routine but my DD just goes along with it for their sake and it’s over mercifully quickly 🫣😆

I remember, when I was about seven or eight, recording a cassette 'radio show' - TRSFT FM! The Radio Show For Tomorrow! - every Saturday for my parents for about a year... obviously now as an almost 47-year-old I know that they fast-forwarded my amazingly funny and engaging 'DJ' banter and just listened to the songs in between (which were songs from albums that they already owned and which I recorded from their record player!)

It's ok though... when I win a Bafta Cymru I'll put it in my speech... revenge will be mine!

MyThreeWords · 31/01/2026 18:35

I'm with you OP! Luckily my two sons were never into dances /songs/ shows. Their 'look at me!!' stuff was all about being the fastest/strongest/ highest-climbing/most death-defying, which is somehow way less annoying.

ColinOfficeTrolley · 31/01/2026 18:39

Our DD loves to sing. Has done since she was a toddler. She has always asked us to listen to her songs.

She's 17 now and still does it and I absolutely LOVE IT.

She moved me to tears singing I dreamed a dream when we were driving to the shops the other day.

Could be worse, our sons a dancer, sometimes we have to go to two hour dance shows to watch him for maybe a total of 10-15 minutes.

Soonenough · 31/01/2026 18:48

Me and my sister made my parents sit through these . Mainly on Saturday nights . I think they liked it ?! Or at least pretended to. I do remember crying because my little brother wouldn't sit in the laundry basket to be the Baby Jesus . Shouting Mum make him do it ! They must have been killing themselves laughing .

I arrived at the wrong time for a group performance and felt bad . My friend told me to tell my DD that she was great and the best singer in the group as I could hear her so clearly from my viewpoint at the back .

PerksOfNotBeingAWallflower · 31/01/2026 18:53

Pick a card, any card! Our DS went through a card trick phase, I only permitted one trick a day.

soupyspoon · 31/01/2026 18:56

Laughing here OP, you are so right!!

Mothersruin123 · 31/01/2026 19:05

I feel your pain. “Muuuum can I do you a dance” several times a day from DD11….usually when she’s supposed to be doing something else. I can only assume I’ll miss it one day very soon when the only thing she wants to show me is an eye roll and the outside of her bedroom door.

Don’t let him become a swimmer.

you have to go to competitions to watch them swim 1 length in less than 30 seconds 🤣 and you’re there for longer than 2 hours!

Enigma54 · 31/01/2026 19:23

I mean she could be performing on BGT this year; you never know! 👯

MrsKateColumbo · 31/01/2026 19:23

I dont mind living room shows, I do definitely mind watching 40 number dance shows where my child is only in a handful of numbers and which seemingly stretch out into infinity....

Favouritefruits · 31/01/2026 19:24

I agree, I now volunteer as a chaperone so I can be backstage and I don’t need to pay the ridiculous amount for tickets.

Mindbogglingx · 31/01/2026 19:25

My son is in his 20s now, but i still think back to the school days the school plays etc.
Thank god i dont have to deal with that crap anymore, he was never in to dance or acting he was more in to make-up and looking fab, reading romance books from the 80s.
Still is.

NotDarkGothicMama · 31/01/2026 19:27

I thought this was going to be a thread about dance club shows. 4-6 hours! I couldn't understand why a dad was sat there wearing headphones with the football on his phone at my first one. I thought he was a bloody genius by the end of that experience. MIL left halfway through on the grounds that it was excessive and TBH I agreed.

cardibach · 31/01/2026 19:29

This is really sad. Creativity is important. Does your DC do music/dance lessons or belong to a theatre group? If not, join them up. Support them.

Anxietyspiral · 31/01/2026 19:29

Dd used to go to a drama class that did a summer showcase of all the different classes (Ballet, acro, musical theatre, tap, jazz, street dance). 3 and a half hours watching other people's kids to see dd speak one line 😭

How awful to have to watch people learning a really difficult and 8mportant skill. I despair of this country’s attitude to the arts. And yes, my DD did performance.

Why? Can’t you appreciate the effort of other children?

Theatre is crap? I despair, honestly.

I have swimmers and performers!

I'd much rather spend a day pool side watching other people's children swim than 2 hours of other people dance.

cardibach · 31/01/2026 19:35

It’s very obvious most parents here don’t come from Wales where we sit through a whole day of Eisteddfod to watch a short performance.
Honestly, creativity is important. Singing, dancing, acting - important. Breaks my heart people view it as a chore.

But I bet you watch tv when you get in. Performance, whether music, dance or acting, is vital to our society. Where do you think the TV performers come from?
