Now I know what I put my parents through when I was a kid (which they also agree with ) and how mind numbingly boring it was for them to endure. My 12 year old regularly shows me dances /songs/ shows anything drama she's created with her self/ her siblings god it's so mind numbing to sit and entertain.
I know I'm being unreasonable but nope can't stand that part of parenting anyone else with me ?

It may sound harsh but I’m with you! Watching your kids perform and express themselves, either at home just for you or as part of a group/ hobby/ at school is one of the absolute joys of being a parent!

That IS part of the reason - you BECAME a parent
Other options are available - never go in without a skyn

We don’t sit there with a face like a slapped arse. When they’re doing their ‘bit’ of course we’re encouraging and tell them how fabulous they are. We’re just glad when it ends.

What do you like doing with your children, then? Genuine question.

Ifusay · 02/02/2026 22:01

Mine were never into performing, I feel I’ve missed out.

We enjoyed taking them to country parks, museums, galleries, cinema, days out to the space centre or conkers in Leicestershire, the Eden project was always a favourite in Cornwall, climbing Conwy mountain, we’ve taken them all over the uk. Camping as a family and also in scouts and guides, Disneyland Paris, the local swings at the park. Throw in the odd brewery/distillery over the years. They’ve had a great time with us. Baking, I taught them both how to cook, do washing and ironing, taught them to swim, ride bikes, play games, all sorts and we took them every week to see both sets of grandparents.

I’m sorry I don’t understand a word of this answer!

I think they’re agreeing with you, saying watching your kids do stuff is part of the reason you have kids and if people don’t want that then they should have used a condom. A bit of a strange post though.

Some downright weird responses on here. What some people don't appear to understand is that there are parts of childrearing which ARE downright dull and mind-numbingly boring. That doesn't mean you are an awful parent and should never have had kids.

My dd was happy to be on stage performing in front of hundreds of strangers, but didn't much like me watching, and never did any 'shows' at home.

I've retird after being a Nanny for over 30 years and can honestly say that's my favourite part.i remember when I was a child my mother had no interest, but a kindly neighbour would let me put on 'shows'.I felt her interest was genuine and it boosted my confidence, that I lost in later life, but I always remembered that kind neighbour..fast forward and I have loved watching various children in my care. The last one I have video's and rewatch them occasionally. Sometimes I send them to the 'child' ,who is now grown up.i never found it boring.same with Barbie and Disney.

NavyTurtle · 03/02/2026 09:50

When they are all grown up and have children of their own and they live far far away, you will reflect on this post sadly. I really miss those days with my kids.

farmlass · 03/02/2026 09:58

I now go and watch my adult ds play in his very heavy rock band .
it’s amazing !
And his friends and audience are amazing .
They look like you’d cross the street to avoid them sometimes but they are the sweetest folk .
We get welcomed with open arms and ds always jumps off the stage and gives us a hug at the end !!
so those ear bursting practice sessions and “listen to this “ were worth it!

Lobelia123 · 03/02/2026 10:05

Oh my gosh....YES! I cant count all the year end assemblies in primary school where the audience had to sit through excruciating singing and recorder / violin exhibitions by barely capable and glaringly untalented children. The thinking seemed to be that everyone should get to have a go no matter whether they were ready or not.
