Now I know what I put my parents through when I was a kid (which they also agree with ) and how mind numbingly boring it was for them to endure. My 12 year old regularly shows me dances /songs/ shows anything drama she's created with her self/ her siblings god it's so mind numbing to sit and entertain.
I know I'm being unreasonable but nope can't stand that part of parenting anyone else with me ?

Ds does rugby.

My feet were turning numb last week 😂

Pineapplewaves · 31/01/2026 20:26

I agree - it’s great watching your child and utterly boring watching the rest. At DC school
parents think nothing of getting up and leaving after their child has performed, even in a theatre where you had to pay for tickets.

InNewYorkNoShoes · 31/01/2026 20:34

When I was a kids if I got bored I would make my mum watch me do a dance. I made them up on the spot so they were awful and had no ending planned so they would drag on for an eternity. Once I did a dance interpretation of an episode of Neighbours. I feel bad for her now, I always chose to do them when she was busy doing housework or something.

Youdontseehow · 31/01/2026 20:34

God I’m having flashbacks to DD’s drama shows. The older kids pieces were quite entertaining but good grief, watching 4/5 year olds “act” for what seemed like hours was torture. At least dancing can be quite cute but dramatic performances are just soul destroying at that age.

5490t · 31/01/2026 20:39

Oh no I don't mean school or drama club shows! These are just dances shes made up at home or songs she already knows but wants to show me she can sing to them 🤦

We had ALOT of plays and puppet shows - mind numbing

Wrong. I’m from Wales. I’ve done endless Eisteddfodau (which can be all day). Loads of school performances. I just like watching kids being creative and think it’s pretty sad when people don’t. Where do you think the professional dancers, singers and actors come from?

Stage schools...?
Not sure any of the students of Tiny Tappy Toez with Denise (Saturday ballet tap and modern) ever made it to Broadway. Despite my years of support (£12 a ticket, all proceeds go to cover room hire).

Do you appreciate comedy?

I know that sounds a bit arsey but it’s clearly meant to be a funny thread and it’s just been taken over by your whingeing.

I’m not wingheing. I’m t(e one being positive. Everyone else is whingeing.
I just think the disdain for the arts and creativity in this country is really sad and not even remotely amusing.

😂 I get it. For me it’s imaginary play. I can do all the making things, board games, books etc but when I have to pretend to be a doggy or play mummies and daddies something inside me dies!

I hate imaginary play with a passion

How do you think people got into stage schools? And as it happens of the (many) young people I know now working professionally in the arts only a minority attended stage schools.

Appalling

Does she have any opportunities to do this as a hobby? Dance classes? Singing? Playing an instrument? School shows? I’d harness the enthusiasm.

Come and watch our show they cry as your heart hits your boots.
I know exactly what you are talking about.
And it's excruciating.

Goonie1 · 31/01/2026 20:47

My daughter can solve a Rubik’s cube in under 2 minutes, which amazes me. What doesn’t enthral me is having to “mix it up” 72,827 times a day.

Xmasbaby11 · 31/01/2026 20:54

my 2 dd used to do these shows, often just before bedtime. They were sweet and boring in equal measure! But yes I miss them now they’re gone. And dd12 does dance. I really enjoy the shows - there are some really talented dancers. I’m not a fan of watching sports so I’d probably struggle if my dc played football or swimming.

Pancakeflipper · 31/01/2026 20:54

I cringe at remembering doing mini dance shows for my grandma. She had been a ballet dancer prior to getting married. And there was me on her kitchen lino, lumping around ungraceful in my dungarees. She was very enthusiastic about my efforts.

winnieanddaisy · 31/01/2026 20:59

This reminds me of my middle DGD . She is an only child and possibly autistic . I live with them , her, DD and SIL . I have my own separate living room from them and every evening she would put on a show for ME in my living room while DD and her husband watched tv in peace 🤣. This went on from the age of 6 till about 12 . I never minded because when my DD was that age I was a nurse and worked long shifts so wasn’t always there for her .

TheDenimPoet · 31/01/2026 20:59

cardibach · 31/01/2026 19:32

Why? Can’t you appreciate the effort of other children?

Oh god, but pretty much every single performance early in the process of learning is absolutely crap. You only clap for your kid because you have to. It's like having a child learning a musical instrument. It's bloody awful!

Things get better if they stick to it, the shows/performances get better and better, and at some point they usually become enjoyable .. but you have my sympathy here! The crap stage is what you have to get through, unfortunately.

As someone who teaches children to play music, and is involved in planning many assemblies at schools showing how the kids are progressing.. I feel your pain.

It. Is. AWFUL.

MrsToddsShortcut · 31/01/2026 21:02

I do get it, (my DD used to create her own musicals but with only one song that she sang over and over for ages!) but they want you to watch because you are the centre of their world and they want to share with you what they’re doing.

In the blink of an eye they’ll be adults with their own lives and I promise you’ll miss the days when they were children who wanted to share everything with you.

At least it is indoors. Football is much worse outdoors freezing, travelling across county on a Saturday morning to freeze on the sideline in a mucky field.
The mini World Cup is 3 hours.

After having three sons all into football I agree 🤣 especially when their team lost and I had to drive them home after 😬 i do miss those days now though!

inickedthisname · 31/01/2026 21:12

Simonjt · 31/01/2026 18:42

Could be worse, our sons a dancer, sometimes we have to go to two hour dance shows to watch him for maybe a total of 10-15 minutes.

This. If there’s anything worse than watching your own kids not-that-great dancing, it’s sitting through hours of other people’s kids doing their not-that-great dancing, just so you can see the five minutes of your own 🤦‍♀️

To be fair I’ve had to go through both and the standard of most Eistedfodd performances is higher than the random stuff my kids perform. I don’t mind the first couple times but my kids like to make me watch them adjust each performance until they’re happy with it- could go on for 2 hours if I don’t put an end to it…

Sausagescanfly · 31/01/2026 21:13

I'm ok with the impromptu dance/drama shows right up to the point where they say, "no, that wasn't quite right, I will do it again." And the whole thing starts again, unless I can think of a decent reason why they can't.

I hate rugby because it's cold/ wet and also there's the risk that they might actually get quite injured and then you have to listen to 40 minutes of how the ref was definitely biased all the way home as they smear mud all over the car. And the coffee is always terrible. Guess where I'm going tomorrow? FML.
